I recently began a self portrait lesson with second grade and I debated over how I wanted to begin with them. I think I have talked on here before about how I often will let my students jump right in and draw with markers or the paint rather than having them start with a pencil. There is definitely a mixture of pros and cons to both approaches. I really wanted these portraits to have lots of personality and I find that sometimes when they start with a pencil, they end up erasing all of their "personality". So, we jumped right in and they "drew" with a paintbrush and black tempera paint. We will begin painting in the color next week. I like using colored construction paper too because I like the way the paint looks on top. I love this one with his head cocked to the side. He probably would have erased it...if we could :) Yes, I need to clean my tables. bad.

Another project in my big Art History unit with my students is finally all displayed and ready to be shared! The two above were chosen for Youth Art Month at the Portage County Library! I found this project via pinterest (which is the worst kind of pinterest post). JUST an image. However, this image was actually pretty useful for understanding the project. Day 1: Picasso intro! Short and sweet powerpoint with a YouTube video of Picasso in action. I did stop it a minute early because he paints a naked lady (and I wasn't ready to tackle that). They really seemed to enjoy this short clip, makes the artist a lot more real to them. If only we had video of Van Gogh! After the video we played "Roll a Picasso" here is a version on Teachers Pay Teachers but I made my own to add a view more parts to it. My students absolutely loved this. They did it for 30 minutes without getting bored! I told them there was no mistakes, they didn't need to erase, and they would take them with them when they left. If they got sick of drawing they could switch to coloring them. I really wish I would of taken some pictures. There was really great ones! Day 2: I show them a little poster that I put together reminding them of some things about Picasso and showing some of his other works. Then I demo drawing the different features on the paper scraps using oil pastels and finishing with a black crayon. I saw such a higher level of confidence of this project and I think it was because of the Roll a Picasso. They had come in knowing what their strengths were with what features, and I didn't limit them to the ones on the sheet either. If there was a way they wanted to draw a feature or knew how, they did it. Day 3: Showed the poster once again just to remind them of Picasso (seeing as we only see each other once every six school days)! And started with a short demo of creating the head shape and coloring and assembling it. Started with drawing the head, arranging the pieces, traced them, took them off and colored the sections of the face with oil pastels. If it didn't naturally break into sections they did it where they thought best. Last step was glue sticking them on and tracing the added paper and lines in black crayon. I am so excited to share these with you, I just LOVE how these turned out! McDill Elementary... Kennedy Elementary... Jefferson Elementary...

Understanding the strict difference between Direct or Indirect Painting will help you create your own painting method and style. Here we will be covering the terms, along with a few examples of those who used the different methods. Each method will be covered in more detail in their own, individual posts. Direct Painting Sargent, Self-Portrait (detail), 1907 Monet, Woman with Parasol, 1875 Vincent Van Gogh, Room at Arles, 1889 The Direct Painting Method is referred to by many names: Alla Prima, En Plein Air, Wet-on-Wet, Impressionistic/Impasto, etc. The basic idea is that a true Direct Painting is finished while all layers are still wet. This can be done in one session or several, as long as the different layers are worked into wet, versus on top of dried layers. Direct painters who paint over several sessions prefer their paint to remain wet for several days in order to work as long as possible. Two mediums that allow for such a length of time are poppyseed and safflower oil. The Daily Painting movement are artists learning to be strict direct painters. Direct painters tend to have more spontaneous, colorful, and effortless (looking) works. If you are an artist who would like to have more color and freedom in your works, I highly recommend checking out Carol Marine's blog, as well as her book, Daily Painting: Paint Small and Often in order to become a more Creative, Productive, and Successful Artist. Below is a short video from the Web Art Academy talking about Direct Painting, as well as a great demo by David Kassan. Indirect Painting Raphael, Madonna of the Meadow, c. 1506 Titian, Bacchus and Ariadne, 1520-1523 Poussin, Et in Arcadia Ego, late 1630s Indirect Painting is done in stages or layers, with each previous stage dried before continuing. The basic stages to Indirect Painting are: Imprimatura or Ground Underdrawing Underpainting / Dead Color Brunaille Verdaccio Grisaille Overpainting Semi-Transparent Glazes This is the "classic" method to oil painting, also called the Flemish Technique. Name any Northern or Southern Renaissance or Baroque painter and this is the way they painted. Note: You will sometimes see people refer to the "Seven Steps of the Flemish Technique," they just break my own steps 4 and 5 into two additional steps. Combination Painting To be fair, most artist are a combination of the two. Sargent was one artist who would paint the majority of his work directly, allow it to dry and then do final color-correcting glazes over the top. Some other famous artists who used both methods were Rubens, Frans Hals, and Rembrandt. Again, each method will be covered in greater detail in separate posts.
