3/14/2010: The Louisiana State Capitol building is the capitol building of the state of Louisiana, located in Baton Rouge. The capitol houses the Louisiana State Legislature, the governor's office, and parts of the executive branch. At 450 feet (137 meters) tall, with 34 stories, it is the tallest capitol building in the United States, the tallest building in Baton Rouge, and the seventh-tallest building in Louisiana. It is located on a 27-acre (110,000 m2) tract, which includes the capitol gardens. The Louisiana State Capitol building is a National Historic Landmark. As part of his gubernatorial campaign in 1928, Huey Long advocated the construction of a new, modern capitol building to replace the Old Louisiana State Capitol building, built in 1847. In 1935, Long—then a U.S. Senator–was fatally wounded by an assassin in the Capitol building, where the bullet holes are still to be seen on the wall.
