In Manhattan's Financial District, the Louise Nevelson Plaza has been renovated and the towering steel sculptures by Louise Nevelson have been reinstalled. The site-specific sculptures pictured above are called “Shadows and Flags.” Nevelson created the black-painted sculptures from scraps of Cor-Ten steel from a foundry in Connecticut. Nevelson was the first woman in the United States to become famous for her public art. She often improvised her artwork, testing the way found materials could fit together, said Maria Nevelson, Louise’s 50-year-old granddaughter. “The scale and the material is masculine, in a way,” said Maria Nevelson, who started the Louise Nevelson Foundation in Philadelphia. “It’s impressive to see a woman doing that, especially back then.” The plaza was the first public space in New York named after an artist, in honor of Nevelson’s pioneering creativity, the city said. Nevelson died in 1988, at the age of 88. Located in Manhattan's Financial District, the triangular plaza is bounded by Liberty St., Wiliam St. and Maiden Lane.
This work is an example of Nevelson's early, small-scale abstract constructions that relied on found materials selected for their visual or emotional appeal. In her search for new materials Nevelson was drawn to wood, as opposed to bronze or marble. This choice reflected her past; her father was a woodcutter and lumberyard owner, and the organic material was a common presence throughout her childhood. The assembled rectilinear wooden blocks of this work present a unified exploration of vertical and horizontal axes, in a visual experiment with constructed forms that influenced her subsequent wall sculptures. However, the format of this work is still that of a conventional sculpture presented on a base, much like traditional, old master sculptures. While many of her later works were painted in monochromatic black, white, or gold because of the personal symbolism of these colors, Nevelson painted this work a bright green that she chose not to reprise in later sculptures. Louise Nevelson was born Kiev, Russia. Her family moved to the United States in 1905, and in 1920 she moved to New York City and began studying at the Art Students League in 1929. Using old pieces of wood, found objects, she constructed huge walls, enclosed box arrangements of complex and rhythmic abstract shapes. Her first one-woman show was at the Karl Nierendorf Gallery in NYC in 1941. She had solo exhibitions at the Norlyst and Nierendorf Galleries from 1943 to 1944. In later years she studied printmaking and experimented with marble and terra-cotta. Her fame came about from her show Ancient Games and Ancient Places at Grand Central Moderns, and she is considered one of the most important American sculptors.

Mit fokus i forløbet I forløbet er mit fokus farvelære - det monokrome farvevalg og komposition - den geometriske komposition. Min forberedelse til forløbet - den konkrete billedfremstilling. Det første, jeg starter med, er at klippe forskellige geometriske former ud af genbrugspap, og jeg skaber varierede overflader ved at vælge pap med forskellige overflader, men også ved at rive lidt overflade af pappet. Herefter laver jeg en monokrom farveblanding. Jeg har valgt en rød farve til formålet, og jeg blander fem forskellige nuancer af den røde farve. Det næste, jeg gør, er at male de udklippede papstykker med de seks forskellige røde nuancer og til sidst "bygger" jeg min skulptur a la Louise Nevelson. De enkelte papstykker limes sammen med varmlim. Anvendte materialer: Pap/bølgepap. Akrylmaling. Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. Born in Russia, she emigrated with her family to the United States in 1905. Her unique artistic style was influenced by the cubist movement, co-founded by Pablo Picasso, and the found object sculptures of Marcel Duchamp. Calling herself “the original recycler”, Nevelson is most famous for her found object assemblages, mostly made of wood and painted in a solid monochromatic black or white.

This worksheet goes along with the FREE Louise Nevelson Sculpture Project Powerpoint lesson. The students observe the sculptures in the presentation and answer questions about them.
