A few weeks ago I received the loveliest parcel from Liberty of London. And I may have pinched myself just a little. Because I never imagined I would ever be on the radar of the Liberty of London. I've been a Liberty fan since I lived in London in the early 90's. And even more...Read More

See how I used a few cuts of Tana Lawn to create this beautiful ombre patchwork effect. It goes together very easily with the magic of strip piecing!

I’ve been on a bit of a design kick lately – and it’s all thanks to Midge. She is Queen Wombat this month and chose the great theme of “London”. So I got busy coming up with some patterns! It so inspired me, I even jumped right in and made my block already! Here it is! A London Guard. I think the textured prints really make him – Sketch for his hat, Raindrops for his jacket and a great braid-looking print for the strap and shoulders. I”m pretty pleased with how he turned out! And for the curious – here are the other London patterns that go with him! They will be released later down the track. So that’s what’s been going on in my paper piecing world lately. How about yours? Quick refresher on what the deal is with the Paper Piecing Party (full details here): * It’s on every weekend here at Quiet Play, starting Friday. * Link up something you’re working on that’s foundation paper pieced * Link a blog post or flickr photo * Visit at least two other links and leave a comment because that’s half the fun! Reminiscent of the classic picnic blanket, this Pink and Yellow Gingham Patchwork Quilt is a great way to bring some sweet country charm to your home- Liberty style! Suitable for an adventurous beginner, construction of this quilt uses simple straight machine sewing to construct the square patchwork pieces and will introduce different quilting methods which will help advance your skills. It has been years and years since I've made a log cabin quilt. Back when I sewed at home at our kitchen table, it seemed almost impossible to get into a good rhythm to make a log cabin quilt. There is a lot more stop and start sewing and pressing and cutting when making log cabins. And to not have space or room to real

For the past few weeks I have been playing with those Union Jack panels from Riley Blake that I blogged about a couple of weeks ago. After living in Great Britain twice for extended amounts of time, I am a die-hard Anglophile with an love for anything Union Jack. So you can imagine my excitement when Riley Blake created these awesome, pre-printed Union Jack panels. Today I am sharing a super-simple tutorial for this “Jacks are Wild” crib-sized quilt, using the flags from the “Blue” Union Jack panel. (This post was originally posted on the Riley Blake blog.) One option is 9″ x 11″ flags printed as panels. There’s a ‘Blue’ version with traditional colors (right), a pastel version (left) and a ‘Black’ version (not pictured). Another version is a 36″ x 42″ giant flag. I can’t wait to come up with something for this guy. Today I am going to show how to make this very simple, wonky Union Jack crib quilt called “Jacks are Wild” (because these flags are all slightly off-kilter). Fabric Requirements: 12 Union Jack flag blocks (1 yard panel) 1 1/2 yards solid white fabric 3/8 yard binding fabric 1 5/8 yard backing fabric Trim […]

I have some work in this exhibition, held annually by the Society of Designer Craftsmen. I spent the weekend in London, attended the private view on the Friday, which was very busy, and spent Sunday there, helping to steward. I met a lot of visitors and friends. Here are some images of my map quilts in situ at the gallery - the Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1, just off Trafalgar Square. The exhibition is open until Sunday 19th January, 10 - 5 every day, except for the last Sunday when it closes at 4 pm. This is a view when you enter the gallery - The Night Road is in the foreground, with some ceramics; some glass pieces are visible on the background to the right. Mayfair 1671 is hanging next to some beautiful wood pieces. And my third piece is Seaside Town, in front of which stand a number of pieces of book art - I really loved them! Very original. If you are in London this week, do pop round to see it. There is a very nice cafe in the gallery as well. Alicia
