The Ingleton Branch of the London & North Western Railway, opened to passengers in September 1861 and went from Clapham, through Ingleton, Kirkby Lonsdale, Barbon, Middleton-on-Lune, Sedbergh and Lowgill, before joining what is now the West Coast main line at Lowgill, just south of Tebay. Passenger services ceased on 30th January 1954, but the line remained open for freight traffic until 1st March 1965. The track was lifted in 1967. The line roughly followed the route of the River Lune. The most impressive features of the line are the railway’s three listed viaducts. These grand structures still dominate their landscapes and survive as memorials to the main line that never was. This is Lowgill viaduct, which consists of eleven semi-circular arches, each with a 45 feet span. From end-to-end, it is 620 feet and carried the Ingleton-Lowgill line 100 feet above the stream below. On 18th February 2012, two Black 5 4-6-0s Nos.44932 and 45305, are confidently in charge of the 1Z86 Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston to Carlisle, seen on the West Coast Main Line behind the disused viaduct, climbing past the former junction with the Ingleton Branch' and on to Tebay through the wonderful Lune Gorge. The Stanier Black 5s had taken the train over from electric traction haulage at Carnforth. © Copyright Gordon Edgar - No unauthorised use.

The history of the wooden churches of Maramures, which dot the villages of north western Romania is an interesting one. Maramures is primarily an Orthodox Christian enclave. While the region was under the domination of the Austria-Hungarian Empire the Orthodox were prohibited from building stone churches.
