Pin It Now! Explore! Rescue! Protect! Octonauts! How To Create Your Own Octonauts Themed Party It's been a while since I've posted anything on the blog, so this is a bit of a flashback. Well worth it, nonetheless! We did an Octonauts theme for my son's 4th birthday celebration. For those of you who don't yet know the Octonauts, they are creature guardians of the seas- a fairly new addition to the Disney channel & Disney Junior channel. In researching party ideas, I found quite the lack of anything Octonauts available in the U.S. and found many other mommies voicing the same disappointment online. I took this as a challenge to get creative! I was able to find a few choices on Etsy for party invitations, but nothing was quite what I had in mind. So I used a template for a party invitation in Word, added my info, & copied and pasted an Octonauts image I found online into the pre-made template. Printed, stamped and mailed. I really do enjoy the old snail mail method for party invitations. Besides, who doesn't feel extra special to receive a fun party invitation in the mail? Also on Etsy, I was able to connect with Julie at CakesAndKids who does amazing & adorable work with fondant! I approached her about doing some "Octonauts Inspired" cupcake toppers & boy, did she deliver! I would encourage you to take a peek at her shop on Esty CakesAndKids, as she really does have something for any type of party one could imagine, and she was lovely to work with. For more Cupcake toppers, I found some more Octonauts images online, copied & pasted into a word document, printed them out on cardstock, cut them out & taped them to striped paper straws. The straws were also ordered from an Esty shop and were fairly inexpensive. The food was a special creative challenge and treat! I did quite a bit of surfing online and found some great inspiration for underwater themed parties. First, I made some heart-stealing & adorable Oyster Cookies. I used store-bought shortbread cookies, pink frosting inside, yogurt raisins for the "pearl", and ready-made eyes in the cake decorating aisle. Also, I made a trio of bell pepper octopus on plates of dip, with black olives for eyes. Another snack was a stalk of celery, dipped in peanut butter to "fish" for goldfish crackers on a plate. The most substantial snack we offered was "mini-sub" sandwiches. To make these I made simple sandwiches (with deli meat and sliced cheese) on hot dog buns, bendy straws for the "periscope", and cheese cubes on toothpicks inserted along the sides to look like portholes. Since Octonauts party decorations are non-existent, I printed some coloring pages that I found online and strung them together with ribbon to make a banner. Also, we hung some green paper streamers to look a little like kelp. Below are the coloring pages I used:

Happy, HAPPY, belated birthday, my friend Tracey! I'm sorry this is so late in coming to you! Joyce from Cards-by-the-Sea did such a great job organizing this birthday celebration, and told us way ahead of time, but it's been a crazy, crazy month for me. On the other hand, there's no way I could miss saying Happy Birthday to Tracey! In honor of Tracey's birthday, I wanted to CASE one of her awesome cards. This wonderfully graphic creation totally fit the bill (and love the CAS-ual Fridays Stamps!) It was the first time using two My Favorite Things Die-Namics dies ... High Rise Upper Case Alpha and Peek-a-Boo Chevrons. Yay for NBUS! Love the large alphas, LOVE the chevrons. You can remove all the die pieces for a uniform look, or put random chevrons back like I did here. With the slightly patterned paper, I kind of like how the pieces aren't put back in the same spots. It breaks it up even more. I struggled with where to put the sentiment (which is why this post wasn't updated yesterday!) and then it occurred to me to put it over the chevron dies instead of at the top of the card where they were just floating around. Still in love with using patterned paper on the inside of the card and for the envelope. Thanks for looking, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRACEY!!!! -Kelly Here are some pics from the Godzilla Party we had this weekend for Jackson. Lots of fun, but it was really keeping me from visiting anyone in blogland ... I really hope to be by soon!! The food table ... random boxes wrapped with kraft paper and turned into city buildings I was so happy with how the bunting turned out ... cut a slit through those trendy paper straws and they totally held each banner. So easy to string afterwards. The Godzilla boogers tasted pretty good, but they weren't terribly popular. The green food coloring really threw the kids (and adults) I think. Pin the Fire Breath on Godzilla. The kids had to wear Jackson's Godzilla mask backwards so they couldn't see. Made for some funny pictures! The winner was a little difficult to call. The cake was really fun to put together. Graham crackers and royal icing made the city somewhat easy to make. Godzilla totally destroyed the city after the party. Godzilla's fire breath maze. The younger kids did just as well, if not better, as the older kids. The kids really had fun with this one and did it multiple times, until the end when they all ran through it at once. Photo prop drawn and painted by my husband (with last minute help from my mother-in-law minutes before the party started!) Present and Favor table Group photo time! I used the Silhouette to make Godzilla stencils for everyone's shirts. We tie-dyed them during the party. Party's over. I took a huge nap and left the cleaning to the next day : )

Lincoln talked about the Octonauts birthday party that he wanted for weeks and weeks before he turned four. This was the first year that he had any interest in what I was planning, so I was extra motivated to make it awesome. We already had Octonauts Costumes for Lincoln and Addie to wear, so that was perfect! I went with a general "under the sea" decoration design, and added in Octonauts-specific themed items where possible. Since the show takes place in the ocean, I thought this was way easier than trying to create all completely Octonauts themed designs. The first big project I tackled was making a Kelp Forest out of green balloons. Andrew and I blew up about 140 forest and lime green balloons, then tied them in strands on fishing line and hung them from the ceiling using push pins. Since they were suspended in the air, whenever someone walked past, the balloons took on some ocean life properties and swayed gently back and forth. It was time consuming to blow up the balloons, but definitely a pretty effective decoration! Everyone thought it was cool. I also used crepe paper streamers to add seaweed strands throughout the entry (where the Kelp Forest hung). This is the view looking up when you entered the house. I continued the seaweed strands throughout the party, surrounding some Jumbo Sea Life Creatures from Oriental Trading that were attached to the wall. Even with many young kids in attendance, we didn't have any seaweed meet its doom during the party! I used my Silhouette Portrait to cut out tons of bubbles for the fish and sea creatures on the walls. I didn't end up having time to place all of them, but the concept was cute anyway. When I have a party, I love using my fireplace for a birthday banner and themed decor. While I still love last year's Firetruck Party (because of the burning buildings), I also really loved how the DIY jellyfish, sea anemone "4", and simple banner turned out! I used my Silhouette for the banner shapes and letters. The font (similar to Octonauts style) is Rosewood Std Fill and was downloaded for free here. The seaweed decorations at the base of the fireplace were actually found at Hobby Lobby! They had some really neat floral picks that reminded me of sea life - and that was so much easier than trying to do more seaweed or sea urchin flowers myself. The sea anemone 4 was a random idea that popped into my mind in the middle of the night while I was crafting like crazy for the party, and I just love it! Watch for a tutorial next week sometime. I used our plush Octonaut pals to aid in the decor, too. Overall, I was really pleased with how the decor looked - even without everything being overly Octonauts specific. I did throw in a few touches - like the logo on the banner. My little Captain Barnacles and Peso, enjoying the aftermath of the party and more Octonauts toys than I am proud to admit we own. The seaweed and urchin flower again, not surrounded by toys! I don't have photos of all of the sea creatures, but they were scattered on the walls throughout the house. The last big decoration that I made (and almost forgot to hang up!) was the Explore, Rescue, Protect banner. This is the big theme phrase of the show and I made it in the three main show colors with my Silhouette. It was a simple touch that added a lot of pizzazz! In the last photo, you can see a sneak peek of our Medic Bag Favors. They were so much fun to create that another post will be dedicated just to those, very soon! The party was two weeks ago and there are still several strands of Kelp Forest hanging up in my entryway. I'm taking it down one strand at a time so that I don't have mass hysteria on my hands when the kids notice it's disappeared!
