At 5m long and 3m wide, this is one of the smallest chapels in the world. It was built almost single-handedly by Brother Deodat, who started work in March 1914. His plan was to create a miniature version of the famous grotto and basilica at Lourdes, in France. It is ornately decorated with seashells, pebbles and broken pices of china. www.thelittlechapel.co.uk
I all way,s think the Cornish cliff top,s look at their best this time of the year , that added splash of colour breaks up the harshness of the rock,s giving an extra lift to the over all scene . How important is it—if at all—for architects to consider the ultimate decay of the buildings they design? After all, it is the new building that realizes best their ideas, hopes, aspira…
22 Jun 1942, Northern Ireland, UK --- It may seem a bit unusual for soldiers to be knitting on "tiny garments," but it does help to pass the time, and these US soldiers stationed somewhere in Northern Ireland, Corporal Robert Cozad, (left) of Red Oak, Iowa, and Private Manny Hamburger, of Des Moines, Iowa, find it a particularly useful hobby for their off duty hours. The boys are good, too! --- Image by Bettmann/CORBIS

Just back from a few days away... It was our 30th wedding anniversary on Monday and we celebrated by visiting the island of Guernsey. Our honeymoon was spent on Jersey all those years ago, but we'd not been to any of the other Channel Islands until now. The weather wasn't particularly kind to us - The flight home (on a prop plane), was an experience, with gale force winds making it a bumpy ride! We made the most of our visit though and saw most of what the small island offers. St Peter Port. Castle Cornet. The Noon Day cannon fire. Candie Garden. The Occupation Museum. The Little Chapel - entirely covered inside and out with a colourful mosaic of broken shards of china and sea shells. Fort Grey. The beach at Fort Grey. Souvenir of the weekend. The National Trust of Guernsey's Folk and Costume Museum. Finally a visit to the Old Quarter at St Peter Port, where this antique shop was closing down - We visited there on it's final day. The owner said she'd been there since 1975, but had decided to semi-retire and now just sell at antique fairs...I bought several items from her...but the best thing was I got a pink one! - AND managed to get it home in one piece on that bumpy flight home! Here it is in pride of place with my others - A perfect souvenir of a lovely mini-break and a reminder of our thirty years together. Niki x
