Hand carved on linoleum block and hand printed, commissioned as the program cover for the wedding to two dear friends. This piece was created to celebrate the wedding of two friends, during the season of advent. They are both so hospitable, and wanted to portray their union as an extension of their table. Breaking bread with new folks and old, sharing mugs of tea and cheeseboards: hospitality is always enough. An Irish proverb quoted in the book “In the Shelter” by Pádraig Ó Tuama states that “it is in the shelter of each other that people live.” You never grow old around a table - and the table will be wide. The quote, “your labor is your contribution to the miracle,” was a quote one of them found on a bathroom wall once, and to them it signifies the beautiful labor that marriage is, the tiny everyday works that contribute to making miracles possible. The Gospel at their wedding was the feeding of the 5,000, and the presider explained how the story only mentioned 5,000 men, not any women or children. The work of those women’s hands, preparing bread and weaving baskets, made possible the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. We see the miracles of Jesus as amazing and effortless and spontaneous; yet another way to look deeper at these things that appear effortless and miraculous from the outside, is that a lot of of hard, joyful, and humble work goes into them. Our ordinary work contributes to everyday miracles. Each print is printed by hand with black water-based ink on 300 series printing paper so each one has unique variations. Prints are sealed in a protective plastic and mailed in a rigid mailer.

Vote | Original hand pulled print Each 8x10" linocut print begins with an idea, a sketch, and a drawing on a block of linoleum. I then begin carving the design with special tools called gouges. Oil based ink is then rolled on with a roller called a brayer, Japanese paper specific for print making is then carefully placed onto the carved block, where I will then use the back of a tool called a barren to transfer the ink onto the paper with pressure. The resulting print is subtly unique, as the process is done by hand. The resulting prints all have their own one of a kind charm. Prints are sent flat in a rigid mailer, ready to frame, signed and dated by the artist.

I have hand carved this subject onto a Linoleum block surface, and inked in a Green Speedball Water Soluble Ink, onto to a piece of 4.75x5.5 inch Strathmore Block Printing Paper. Block Prints are best enhanced by mounting onto a larger piece of paper, matted, then framed. This artwork is Hand Pressed , not by machine. All of my gallery pricing includes my cost of shipping .

Next, I carve the design into a linoleum block. The negative space is what is carved away and the remaining surface is what gets inked. I press my paper against the block and rub the back with a spoon until the image appears. Then, I hang the successful prints up to dry for a few days -the oil based ink takes forever! To finish, I sign each print with a pencil. Image is printed by hand by the artist. Paper is torn to size by the same hands -please allow for small variations in the printed image and size of the paper. That's what makes them special :) Feel free to reach out to me through messages. This linoleum block print is letterpress printed onto archival cotton paper. This is an original print, not a reproduction. Each print is titled, signed and numbered in a limited edition of 100. This print is part of a long-term series highlighting the animals, birds, plants and landscapes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and Nevada. All of my prints are individually letterpress printed in multiple colors from several hand-cut linoleum blocks. I print these linoleum blocks on an antique SP15 Vandercook letterpress here in my studio. Each color of each individual print is hand fed separately though the letterpress, so for a limited edition of 100 prints that have five colors in them, I will press paper through the letterpress 500 times. The greeting cards and handmade books I sell are also all letterpress printed, some from my collection of antique wood type. Everything at Meridian Press is created using all cotton archival papers.
