For this week's issue of TIME, Sanna Dullaway digitally colorized archival images of America's 16th president in hopes of bringing history to life. Here's a look back on the iconic images she's revisited.

Lincoln turned three last month and we had a great day celebrating his birthday. Andrew was able to be home half a day, so we went out on a birthday adventure! But first, we got in some awesome firetruck playing when he woke up. When he turned two, we took Lincoln to Crown Center in downtown Kansas City for a celebration. He loved it so much that we decided to visit again this year. Our first stop was Fritz's, the restaurant where you order by phone at your table and have your food delivered by train! It is for sure one of the coolest kid restaurant destinations in our city. The kids love it. Addie was shouting "choo-choo" anytime she heard a train whistle blow. Neither one of them wanted to leave. Lincoln even got a giant free birthday sundae. He was so excited. He very rarely eats ice cream, so it was a big deal. After lunch (and a potty break - yay potty learning?), we headed to this spring's free children's exhibit - 75 Years of Oz, Oh My! The kids loved this exhibit. They ran themselves completely ragged. Thankfully, there is only one entrance/exit to the attraction, so we were able to keep track of them pretty easily. Addie on the yellow brick road? One of the cutest things I have seen in ages. We are always impressed by Crown Center's children's exhibits, and this one definitely did not disappoint. We want to go back again before it closes! After our trip to the land of Oz, we headed to SEA LIFE Aquarium, where we were so excited to take a tour of all the sea creatures. You can read my full review (and enter to win tickets if you're local) here. We loved the aquarium so much! I can't wait to go back again. While we had a super fun time, all the excitement definitely wore the kids out. They fell asleep on the car ride home. It took some coaxing to get everyone away enough for Lincoln to be interested in opening birthday gifts. We gave him some new books (my go-to gift for every occasion), a giant talking firetruck, a firetruck coloring book, and a big ambulance. Emergency service vehicles are the most desired items around here right now. Since I was in the midst of planning his big firetruck birthday party, we just picked up a cookie cake from the grocery store bakery to celebrate with the evening of his birthday. Not the best choice when you are trying to eliminate unhealthy foods, but he was pleased with it. And he was so excited to blow out his candle! It was a pretty great day for our little three year old. I don't know if he will remember this birthday or not, but I know he enjoyed it - so that is good enough for me.
I'm back with a little update! My baby turned one year old a few weekends ago. And I. Can't. Believe. It. I never really understood why moms would cry when their babies turned one. But now I get it. My baby is a toddler and it happened all so fast. In a flash we sped through breastfeeding, tummy time, burp cloths, and bottles. And now, all that is boxed up as sweet little memories of a year gone by. Shortly after we decided on the name Abraham, I came up with the idea to throw him an Abraham Lincoln themed first birthday. Sure he wasn't even born yet, but that's not too early to start planning his first birthday is it? (don't answer that) We didn't name Abe after the former president but we didn't mind making the connection with one of the greatest presidents this country has ever seen. A couple months before the big day, I came up with the invitation. And it is my favorite. I created the invite by downloading the background image and then layering a neutral backdrop on top in order for me to add the party details. I had some fun with the wording by looking at the Gettysburg Address for inspiration. I had them printed onto cardstock at staples. Then I focused on the decorations. I wanted to incorporate a patriotic, red, white, and blue theme. I also added a bit of copper to keep it from feeling like a 4th of July party. So I bought these fun red, white, and blue fans and secured a print out of a copper penny onto one of the fans. It was a super windy day so we secured them to the siding using Zots. Meijer was selling these fun political napkins and I couldn't resist. Abraham Lincoln was a part of the republican party but I did buy one package of the democratic napkins so everyone would feel represented. We used cute little baskets with red, white, and blue liners instead of paper plates. Fun! Another way I incorporated Abe Lincoln was by creating names for some of the food. For example: Abra-Hamburgers Lincoln Log Dogs Lemon-Abe We also served Corn on the cob (Abe's Ears), fruit salad, pasta salad, and chips. I had made cookies in the shape of Abe Lincoln's hat that I was planning to serve too, but I ended up running out of time to decorate them before the party. Michael suggested I set them out anyway and let people decorate their own. Major brownie points for the hubby for that idea! MAJOR! It was fun to have a little activity for people to participate in while we waited to eat. Not to mention.....cookies as appetizers = winning. After eating we opened gifts. Michael and I talked about different ideas of what we could get Abe for his birthday and we finally landed on the perfect idea. A few years ago we were given a couple of wooden Adirondack chairs that I refinished. We have them sitting out in front of our house facing the river and we really enjoy using them. So we decided to get one just Abe's size and engrave his name on it. We bought this chair on Amazon, burned his name onto the front, and stained it to match. And yes, his onesie does have a shade-wearing Abe Lincoln on it. I made the onesie using my silhouette machine and some heat transfer paper. The suspenders I found last minute at Meijer and the shorts I bought from a secondhand store. While opening gifts, we played a little trivia game. In between each gift we had a little trivia game that we played to keep the adults interested. I called it "Presidents Say What?" First prize took home Lincoln, the movie released in 2012, staring Daniel Day-Lewis (it's SO good if you haven't seen it!) and second prize was a roll of pennies. :-) And before it was smash cake time, we had to do a little photo op with our little Abe. It lasted all of 40 seconds but it was just enough time to get this picture. And finally, it was time for cake. I found this fun red, white, and blue cake mix at Meijer. This birthday party was not necessarily brought to you by Meijer... but it might as well have been. I made a two layer cake and covered it with white frosting with star spangled sprinkles on top. I made a copper "1" for the top of the cake as a nod to the penny and his first birthday. It took him a while to get into it. But he finally dove in once we gave him a fork to hold. He didn't use the fork, but he liked holding it and digging into the cake with his hands and face. The party went by in a flash, just like his first year. But we tried to enjoy every minute. We are so thankful for all the family that helped with the party and all those who came to celebrate with us. Happy Birthday Abraham Mark. We love you so much!

Being our second time throwing a Little Einstein's Birthday Party for a 3-year-old, we about have it down to an art. 1.) the invites: Just a picture + text that I printed at Walmart photo for $.09 a piece. Cheapest invitations ever. This is great option to get exactly what you're looking for. 2.) the friends: 3.) the cake: 1 layer favorite ice cream + 1 layer favorite cake + cover with frosting + top with action figures = perfectly easy themed cake + one happy birthday girl 4.) the activities: (sorry no pics) ~ paint your own masterpiece: frame the picture + the set of watercolors and you have yourself the take-home gift. ~ hide + seek Rocket: like hot/cold, except you "pat pat pat" your knees - faster when their close and slower when their not. Each kid takes a turn hiding Rocket and a turn seeking. ~ play instruments: all sorts of instruments to choose from. The kids play along with some classical music. This could even be an alternate version of freeze dance just with instrument play instead. ~ additional goodie-bag items: whistle pops, kazoos, balloons 5.) the Thank You's: Again, just a picture with some text that I will glue onto some cardstock for some personalized, homemade Thank You cards. Super easy and super fun. Mission Completion!

Wow where did that second year go!! Its amazing how time goes so slowly when youre pregnant and when babies are young and calm in the run up to their first year. Then suddenly they explode into little bundles of energy and similarly time flies along with them... Anyway, as you would surely have realised by now figure Katherine has just turned 2. The invite perfectly summed up Katie as a "1 going on 2" year old ... a dolphin-mad, Bubboo-mad and Noddy-mad happy choppy! Of course theres no denying I loved the theme, Noddy was actually my hero as a young kid too. I still distinctly remember my Noddy bedroom and duvet set that my mother diligently sewed up for me (my how the tables have turned!) Anyway enough jibber jabber, moving onto the decorations.... Poundland kindly made this whole party feasible for me with the enormous Noddy posters they sell. I quite literally used them for everything :) First one is here at the entrance of the party venue ... Then here they are chopped up as centrepieces with brightly coloured balloons, and table cloth labels ... And the party packs were as follows ... Here are some cupcakes with the Noddy characters as rice paper toppers Not to forget the large Dolphin cake with Rainbow jelly as requested by the Birthday Girl!! The cake was modelled using Rice Crispy Treats and covered in fondant Here is how the Jelly part came out ... Here are some cakes with Noddy drawn by stencil using chocolate sprinkles And lastly my favourite .... here is the look on the birthday girls face when she saw all the decorations :)

Okay, so technically, my birthday is the day BEFORE the first day of school this year, but growing up it was on the first day of school quite often. It's a good thing I loved school! :) This year we have Meet The Teacher on August 20, then (my birthday) the 21st is a teacher workday and the official day for the kids is the 22nd. I love to use my birthday to model how we will celebrate birthdays for the year. ;) I thought about giving the kids an invitation to a birthday party on the first day of school (no presents allowed, of course!) just to get them REALLY excited about that first day. I'm not sure though. What kind of super fun, really cool activities could we do to celebrate? Any ideas? I've been thinking about this because yesterday I went to school and put up my birthday display. I FINALLY found those giant pixie stix at Dollar General and they were only 25 cents each!! I created my little balloons and stuck them in my birthday display! For my Hollywood theme I used pencils with stars taped to the tops and red and gold bags. I found these short-ish gift bags and tissue that coordinates with my theme at Target! What else do you do for students' birthdays? I'm going to switch up the traditional "Happy Birthday" song (because my kiddos DROVE me CRAZY with all the add-ons at the end last year....at first they were cute, but then as the year went on it lasted about 10 minutes. When the "EAT MORE CHICKEN" line was added last year, I knew I needed a change!) Instead, we're going to try this Happy Birthday Cheer that I found on Pinterest (of course, I needed to cutesy it up...click to download your copy). I also have my students work on a page to create a "Happy Birthday" book for the birthday student for morning work instead of the traditional assignment that morning. Since the birthday kid doesn't need to create a page, he/she gets to design the cover of the book! The birthday kid also gets to pull a birthday coupon from a birthday bag for some type of special treat for the day. At the end of the day (while waiting on car numbers, etc), the birthday kid gets to play a "Birthday Bonanza Game" with a friend of his/her choice. It's really just a sneaky way to get in some addition and subtraction practice (there are one, two, and three digit card sets for different times of the year), but they think it's FUN! I want to know - what do you do to celebrate student birthdays? And, what do you think I should do about the first day of school? Celebrate or not? I've always wanted to have a party/celebration for the FIRST day of school (shouldn't we have kids celebrate the start of school rather than the end of school?), but I definitely don't want parents to send in gifts. Help me out here....what do you think? Also, swim by to visit Courtney at Swimming into Second today and you could win the Non-Fiction Text Features Sign set from Teacher's Clubhouse! Click below.
Can't believe our little buckaroo, Lincoln, is five! (I repeat, my BABY is 5! Oh help me Rhondas! :) Our boy plays Indian Chief, Cowboys and/or Davy Crockett almost every day... So naturally, we decided on a Cowboys and Indians party! This was a left-over piece of wood we found in the barn. I thought it made a great western-style giant letter "L" in honor of the birthday boy, Lincoln. I carried it out to the driveway as an easy way for guests to find the party. When guests arrived, they got to choose a cowboy or cowgirl hat or an indian headdress to wear for the party and to take home. We purchased this wood sawhorse from Home Depot for
