... and found an adoring female - and I got lucky with a set of 30 or so images of the progress of the courtship display In his courtship, the male Tufted Coquette 'dances' above the female in an intimidating way. He uses his ability to fly backwards as well as forwards while circling around her repeatedly to fly very close and then back off. She responds agressively - initially jabbing at him with her beak when he gets too close - and then becoming more passive until they eventually fly off as a pair into the 'blue yonder'
Found a patch and watched their displays & dives for a while. The tail whistle sound at the end of their routine is sooo cool. Makes you laugh every time. Sounds like a snippet of one of those whistles on a string you could spin around in circles. Don't know how anyone thought it was a vocalization - if you sit and listen to them you can totally tell that it isn't.
Bird photography can be among the most rewarding and stunning photography that many of us will ever try. While it requires the patience of a saint, the resulting shots, in the right conditions will often make all of the effort worthwhile. While a lot of bird photography is done with specialist equipment such as telephoto lenses, it is also possible to take some reasonable shots without any special gear.
