| Life Skills | Budgeting | Math | Game of Life Simulation | Independent Living | In this activity, students will get to jump right into what it's like for them to live on their own. They will get randomly assigned a career and salary, and have a variety of "stations" they rotate through to simulate real world expenses they will need to budget for. Are you interested in the GOOGLE SLIDES version of this activity? CLICK HERE! Students will get to select a wide variety of options while participating in this game of life simulation. Whether it is finding the right home, car, cell phone package, or place to shop for groceries, all of their choices will matter! They will also experience random life events that get thrown their way like a flat tire, broken appliance, or a surprise bonus at work. The financial ups and downs just never stop! How I Use This In My Classroom: Teachers can use this activity in one of two ways. The first way is my favorite and involves students rotating through different "life centers" around the classroom. Each of the posters can be laminated and placed for students to easily access and pick from. They move throughout the room picking their choices and adding the numbers correctly to their budgeting sheet. The second way to use this activity in your classroom is to use the version where students can get all the financial data from the printable packet that is included. This would be a better option for classrooms with limited room or for students who might get easily distracted moving around. Option two allows students the opportunity to work from their seats. Both options provide students with a deep look into what it's like to live on their own in the real world! Purchase Includes Access To: Version One: Large posters with real world financial choices students will have to pick from. A total of 11 "station" posters are included. A budgeting sheet is also included. Teachers also have access to a "Random Life Events" worksheet that they can pass out randomly to students for them to practice budgeting for unplanned financial events. Version Two: This version condenses everything noted above into a printable worksheet format for easy all-in-one access. Simple comprehension questions are also included for each "station." A reflection worksheet comes with both versions. Looking for other Independent Living Lessons? Apartment Hunting: Click Here! Apartment Budget: Click Here! Apartment Budget (GOOGLE): Click Here! The life skills assessment checklist is a handy tool for pre assessments, ongoing summative assessments and post teaching assessments with your middle and high school life skills learners. It is great to use as part of your life skills back to school activities planning, as it focuses on key life and employability skills that you can teach in life skills and community access programs. As young people with special needs make transitions from school to training or work, it is useful to check their progress towards independence across a range of life and employability areas. This quick and easy skills checklist provides a summative assessment that can be used as the basis for a transition assessment for an IEP at high school level, or to check progress towards learning goals in a life skills, vocational or work education program. The checklist can be printed and copied into a booklet, providing an easy tool for ticking skills as they are completed and providing a simple summary page of highlights, challenges and future goals for students. What skills are included? The skills covered include both life skills and employability skills areas, such as: hygiene clothing travel communication diversity body language map reading public transport greetings job interviews resumes nutrition assertiveness confidence social behaviors Teachers and trainers can print some or all of the pages to create individualised booklets based on student requirements. Word document versions available on request to allow for adjustments for students if required. Note Some skills included in this resource may not be a good fit for some learners. For example, eye contact might not be appropriate to teach to an autistic child as it is an aspect of their autism rather than a skill that necessarily needs to be taught. Use your discretion in deciding which skills are relevant and appropriate to include in your teaching program before you begin assessing life skills with the assessment checklist. Extend the learning Your Life Skills and Special Education students will love starting the new school year with these new life skills back to school activities, with independence, community access, literacy and numeracy skills included. Who is prepping more work boxes this summer? I just love getting new ideas, especially for our older life skill students! Christina Bailey, a transition life skill teacher, offered to share a bunch of her work boxes on my blog! Thank you Christina! Christina works with transition aged students (19-26 years old) with severe cognitive and/or health impairments. Her school serves students from multiple school districts within the county who learn best in an alternative placement. Are you ready? Here they are!! Putting together (or taking apart) flashlights. Bonus points if students can get the batteries in correctly and get the light to turn on! (Motivation!!) Ice cube tray and colored pebbles with tongs. I love the fine motor aspect added here. Marker packaging. I absolutely love this task and would be a great one to buy during back to school marker sales (especially on those really cheap markers you don't really want to use in your classroom!) Erasers on pencils. This has always been one of my favorite tasks! Silverware sorting. A must for every work task station, am I right? And a super easy and cheap one to put together. Silverware rolling / packaging. I love this task as it is perfect for vocational preparation. Putting together curlers. Ribbon threading around a wire basket. I never would have thought of this task! I love using the wire basket to thread the ribbon, and bet students would have fun with this task too. Sewing kit packaging. Packaging tasks like this are great! Tea candle sort. I love this age appropriate color sorting activity. Toiletry packaging. Wouldn't it be awesome to get donations of items like this and put together kits to give out to the homeless as a classroom service project? So, there you have it! Did you get some more good ideas? Happy task box prep! If you ever have anything you want to share, feel free to email me. I love being able to share your fantastic ideas with other special education teachers like yourself!

I didn't have a very hands-on family when I was growing up, so I really enjoyed taking a Home-Ec class when I was in highschool. I learned a few things that I still use today, but I wish I would've had more hands on training in home life skills.
