Are you gearing up for your first year of law school??? The last bit of time before the first year starts in nerve-wracking. I spent it trying desperately to prepare myself for the experience: what I would wear, what I would need and what an outline was. It is very hard to prepare and know what to expect from an experience like law school. Also, people were always asking what I needed. I didn't even know what I needed let alone tell them what to get me! So, I have compiled a list of the things I could not have survived my first year of law school without. This is seriously a busy law student's best friend; I use Amazon for pretty much everything except for groceries because it is easy, shipping is quick and the prices are great. Wireless Headphones Seriously- these are a lifesaver. At school, they block out all the noise and I don't even have to plug them in. At home, they help me to ignore the loud ESPN constantly playing in my living room (thanks, Hubby) while studying or at the gym when earphone cords used to drive me nuts. Also, they are just awesome for whenever I want my music to follow me everywhere without bugging the people around me. I own this cost-effective pair and they are great! 2. Bookbag You simply have to have a big, hardy book bag to lug all the case books around. I have one with a laptop compartment for added protection. I made sure to get a bookbag that has highly padded straps as my books are heavy and would kill my shoulders otherwise. It may not be very stylish but a bookbag is the only way to go. 3. Water Bottle Law school = longgggg days at the school. Personally, I get super thirsty and I must keep a water bottle with me at all times or I go nuts. I alternate between my Lexis Nexis Camelbak and RTIC tumbler. I fill my bottle in the morning with my own filtered water from home and then it keeps me hydrated all day. 4. Travel Coffee Mug I also cannot live without coffee and when I am busy, I just take it on the go. Particularly on mornings, I have class. I love these no spill coffee mugs- I never have to worry about it spilling on my books and it also keeps coffee warm foreverrrrr. You can also use one of these for tea or hot chocolate if you are not a coffee drinker. There is nothing like a warm drink on a cold morning or for a study marathon. 5. Umbrella Getting from the car to school on a rainy day is the worst. I keep a small umbrella in my bookbag at all times for this very reason. I hate for my books or papers to get wet and also if it is a day where you had to dress up, you will want an umbrella. Better to be prepared! 6. Pencil Case I carry a multitude of pens, highlighters, pencils and various other small office supplies with me at all times in school. Instead of letting them free in my bookbag and make a big mess or get broken, I keep everything together in a pencil case that I can just pull out and set on the desk during class. 7. Book Light I like to read before bed but my husband goes to sleep before me. I got this little book light so I can read without bothering him. I get my reading in and it helps me to relax and wind down before bed. I also sometimes use this little light for reading my casebooks in the car when we are driving to our parent's houses on the weekends. It's just something handy to have around. 8. Stapler There is so much paper involved in law school. Personally, loose papers drives me crazy so when in doubt, I staple it. I also keep a little stapler in my bookbag for last minute assignments or worksheets from class. Here is a reasonable set of a small and regular stapler! 9. Portfolio I thought this would be useless but I use it alllll the time! Interviews, trial notes, speakers, moot court tryouts... and so much more I cannot remember. It is just a good thing to have stashed away in your desk for future use. Professional school calls for professional items! 10. Resume Paper I have handed out my resume more times during my first year of law school than any other time in my life. Having a box of resume paper on hand is a great idea to avoid the running to three stores the night before a job fair for paper panic. Resume paper is a bit expensive but it is necessary to complete your professional look. 11. Legal Pads I use legal pads constantly for notes at home, diagrams, outlining papers, practice essays... pretty much any time I need to jot something down real quick. I also love having legal pads come finals time because they are perfect for practicing essays and rewriting outlines/definitions/etc. I am weird though because I only like white legal pads. 12. Desk Organizer My desk always seems to be a mess during school, despite my best efforts. Having a desk organizer really helps to keep the mess to a minimum which in turn makes me more productive because a tidy work space is always the best workspace for me. 13. File Box I file all of my outlines, notecards, writing samples and financial information for school in addition to regular bills, records, etc. I file all that school stuff so that I can use them later for bar prep. I have a file cabinet but I know many people do not have room for a full file cabinet in their apartments. A file box does the same job in less space. 14. Planner I could not live without my planner for law school. I write everything down- homework, meetings, to-do lists, grocery lists... it keeps me sane. Not everyone wants to buy a custom planner so here are some cost effective but still perfectly functional (and pretty!!) options from Amazon. 15. Lapdesk I can be notorious for doing homework from either bed or the couch when I need a break from my desk. Therefore, I love love love my lapdesk. I think everyone should have one, law student or not! 16. Boyfriend Pillow When I sit on the bed or floor to study, a little back support is necessary. These boyfriend pillows are the greatest thing. Back and elbow support for when you need to study somewhere other than the desk. 17. 3 Hole Punch I said earlier that law school is full of papers... it can be overwhelming. Along with stapling, I 3-hole punch everything and try to keep in organized in binders. 18. Wireless Mouse I hate using just the little pad on my laptop so whenever I am at home, I rely heavily on my wireless mouse. It makes research soooo much easier. 19. Suit Invest in at least on quality, well-fitted pant or skirt suit before starting law school. It is just something you need to have hanging in your closet for various interviews, events, and presentations throughout your first year of law school. 20. Lunch Box Law school is not a time in life where you will have tons of money. As a result, most people in my school pack their lunches to save money and stay healthy. Special eduction law can be a bit gray at times. Although it should be clear cut, it can be difficult to get explicit answers to some of the basic questions that pop up in the day-to-day life of a special education teacher. Here is a scenario that you may have run into before. You need to set up an IEP meeting, but have been unable to confirm a meeting time with the family. How many attempts do you need to make to set up an IEP meeting with a family? What do you do if they don't respond? Can it all be done through email and phone calls or does one of the attempts need to be a letter? Does one attempt need to be a certified letter? While there are laws related to these questions (which you can find HERE), you may find the answer given still leaves you a bit confused. When it comes to these questions, and many more, the law does not give specifics. The specifics tend to come from each state's interpretation of the law and from court case rulings. So how is a special education teacher supposed to make sense of the scattered out information and try to teach at the same time? Well... it's really hard. Some districts have incredible administrators who have a deep understanding of the law, current court cases, and best practice. Many of these districts also reach out to lawyers for guidance. They do the leg work so you can focus on providing your students with what they need to be successful. With that being said, it is still in everyone's best interest to know how to seek out the answers to your own questions. If you do not have this level of support in your district, you will have to take the extra steps to become informed of your role and responsibilities as a special education teacher. I cannot answer all of your questions here. However, I can provide you with some links and resources that will empower you to become more informed and confident in your understanding of special education law. I am going to share a ton of information. I recommend bookmarking this page so that you can refer back to it as questions arise throughout the school year. But first, let's start with the basics. There are three main federal laws that address disabilities. I recommend you click on the links and skim through each of the laws. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - The primary purpose of IDEA is "to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living." IDEA (2004) This is a major law in the world of special education and there is a lot jam packed into this act. You can use the search feature on this page to find information related to a specific topic. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - This is a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination based on disability. This law is less applicable to public education, but is still valuable to review. Section 504 Rehabilitation Act - Section 504 extended civil rights to people with disabilities in education and other settings. The act outlines the need for a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) which may include reasonable accommodations. Unlike IDEA, students do not need to qualify for an IEP to fall under the umbrella of 504 services. Please note - this is why it is extremely important that the accommodations listed in the IEP or 504 plan are being followed. If they are not, it becomes a civil rights issue, not just a special education issue. Click on Subpart D for information related directly to preschool, elementary, and secondary education. If reading through those three acts seems daunting, don't worry. I am going to share with you some great resources for synthesizing the plethora of information found above. WrightsLaw - I cannot recommend this site enough. It is run by Pete Wright, an attorney who represents children with special needs, and Pam Wright, a psychotherapist who has worked with children and families since the 70s. They summarize court cases in a way that is easy to understand and provide concrete takeaways from the rulings. They have also written numerous books related to special education law and provide training around law and advocacy throughout the country. Make sure you sign up for their newsletter to stay on top of current court cases. The website has quite a bit of information and can be a little difficult to navigate. However, you can click HERE to watch a quick video about how to sift through all of the information. Center for Parent Information and Resources - This website was produced under the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. While it is geared primarily toward parents, it serves as a great resource for anyone working with students with special needs. Their resource library provides links to documents related to disability services and special education. This site is easy to navigate and the information is accurate and concise. National Education Association (IDEA & Special Education) - This site offers "IDEA Briefs" to explain developments about and aspects of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). They are presented in a question and answer format, and are quick and easy to read. The site also offers a nice summary of the 2004 reauthorization of IDEA found HERE. Department of Education - The specifics surrounding special education law can vary between states. Search your state's department of education website for state specific laws, codes, and policies. You can search for your state HERE and get a list of helpful links. State Specific Education Association - Many states have their own rules and regulations that expand upon those found in IDEA. Your local union (if applicable) may have resources to help you learn more about special education law in your state. If you are unable to find answers on the website, don't hesitate to reach out to your local union reps to see if there are any resources or training opportunities that may be available for special education teachers. Understanding the law is a huge undertaking and I hope that this post has given you some guidence and resources to make it a bit easier.
