This is another super simple foldable, called a shutter fold. It begins with a regular sheet of copy paper. Each ‘short’ side is folded in towards the center of the paper. On the front, each flap contains an example of one type of pollination and is labeled. Be sure your students understand that one flowering plant is growing from a single root system while the other shows two flowers with separate root systems. Inside, there is plenty of room for explaining each type of pollination and comparing/contrasting their similarities and differences. Use Venn Diagram to talk about ‘meat eater’ vs ‘plant eater’ Guided Practice ü Use realia to show Ss that a chain is made of links. ü Introduce term “food chain” by watching a video clip (discovery channel: What is Food Chain?). ü T distributes copies of book The Food Chain. Ss will read through and discuss pictures and ideas on each page. Independent Practice ü Ss will be given a graphic organizer and animal pictures. First, I need to admit that I traced this image. I didn’t like any of my free-handed, dissected flowers, and just like I tell my students not to get hung up on their drawings, I had to allow that the stress of drawing this image well enough was getting too great. (I’ll also admit that I am rather proud I can follow my own advice!) The base of this poster is just a piece of regular copy paper or cardstock. The folded flaps are regular copy paper cut into 2 ½ inch x 4 inch pieces. (Okay, I discovered that trick after making my model. My model only has a ½ inch flap to glue to the poster, but this made coloring it a trick. My students, instead, create a folded piece, with the info written inside that they glue down; this is much simpler that writing on the poster itself.) Each of the flap pieces, 9 in total, need the flower parts labeled on their fronts. For younger kids you could simplify this by omitting the parts they don’t yet need to learn. Again, we fill out the information as a class to ensure students have correct and complete information to study, and once the poster is ready, students can use it to study and self-test.

Back in May we went to the 'science rendevous', an annual science fair in Toronto, Canada. There were lots of games and hands on activities for the children. I particularly enjoyed this Pollinator game, to explain the process of plant reproduction. Flowers were made with large bright petals, and at the centre a plastic drinks bottle with a whole cut in it large enough to reach inside the bottle. You'll need to make at least two of these flowers. The bottle had tiny pom poms placed in the bottom. This is the pollen. Each child was given an insect to pollinate the flowers, made of a lollipop stick with an insect sticker on the end. On the back of the lollipop stick was a sticky pad. The pad was removed... and then the insect pollinator could reach into the flower and collect the pom-pom pollen. Once you've loaded up with pollen... You go to the next flower and pollinate it. This is a great way for young children to learn about pollination. Back home in England, we carried on learning about plant parts, pollination and fertilization. As the flowers were in full bloom in the garden, why learn from a book. We looked at a flower diagram and then we identified the parts on real flowers in the garden. We had a great morning in the garden looking at the flowers, watching the bees and butterflies visiting them. We talked about how the flowers are adapted to insect and wind pollination and Jemima enjoyed taking photos.
