During the mid 1800s, pottery flasks were made in the form of the root vegetables that the liquor was distilled from. Home distillers used potatoes, carrots, and turnips to brew strong liquors for personal use and for illegal sales. The hand made pottery flasks were filled, corked and distributed. They have become extremely hard to find as they were often discarded when emptied of their contents. This turnip flask has bright glazing – a green neck flows into a cream, pink, and orange ombre body. The flask lies sideways on three raised feet, and has the original cork stopper. Realistically molded and increasingly rare. 8.75 in. L x 3 in. W x 2.5 in. H In very good antique condition, showing the expected light surface wear and some aging to the cork.

Evoking ancient pottery jars with its rounded form, Talia finds an updated expression in the purity of its line and monotone hue. Ferm Living’s lidded container—that can also be used as a vase—is fashioned in glazed ceramic with a reactive matte finish. As part of the Muses collection lineup, it recasts a classically pleasing shape in a comparably modernist idiom.

I read the most wonderful Karen Karnes interview with Mark Shapiro this morning. The first pot I ever bought, was one of Karen's casseroles. Some years later, in the early 80's, I was fortunate enough to take a several days, hands on workshop with her at Big Creek Pottery in Davenport, California. This is one of the photos of her from the workshop. We slept in rough bunk rooms, ate some lovely vegetarian food, and had several days of making pots, watching her work, having critiques and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the central California mountains just north of Santa Cruz. Daniel Rhodes had a studio nearby and joined us for a party at the end of the workshop, and John Glick and his wife stopped the studio by one day and kindly remarked on a very large bowl I had just finished. It was total immersion in clay for several days - no cooking, no house to care for - just work, eat and sleep. Heavenly! Here's a link to the interview: http://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/interviews/oral-history-interview-karen-karnes-12096 Enjoy!

Yellow ceramic vase - Xhosa artists project Traditional craft arts continues to thrive in South Africa in the fields of beadwork, pottery, basketry, jewelry and wood carving. There has been a gradual shift in the ‘folk arts’ for several decades where the status of the artists no longer remain anonymous and many have established a name for themselves through gallery promotions and the internet. However there are still a lot of unsigned products turning up in the market place with the importance of building a name going unappreciated. Black and white artists in South Africa alike have always
