Sustainable Business: Key Issues is the first comprehensive introductory-level textbook to address the interface between environmental challenges and business solutions to provide an overview of the basic concepts of sustainability, sustainable business, and business ethics. Fully updated for the third edition to take into account recent developments and trends, such as the climate emergency, COVID-19, and supply chain sustainability, this textbook introduces students to the background and key issues of sustainability and suggests ways in which these concepts can be applied in business practice. Though the book takes a business perspective, it is interdisciplinary in its nature and draws on knowledge from socio-economic, political, and environmental studies, thereby providing a critical understanding of sustainability in the changing paradigm of global business. It goes beyond the conventional theories of sustainability and addresses critical issues concerned with population, consumption, and economic growth. It discusses realistic ways forward, in particular, the circular economy and Cradle to Cradle frameworks. The book is both a theoretical and a practical study guide for undergraduate and postgraduate students of broad areas of sustainability, teaching ways to recognize opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship at the intersection of environmental, economic, ethical, and social systems. It takes a strategic approach in applying the power of business methods and policy to address issues of global importance such as climate change, poverty, ecosystem degradation, and human rights. This textbook is essential reading for students of business, management, and sustainability courses. It is written in an engaging and accessible style, with each chapter including case studies, discussion questions, and end of chapter summaries. 6 Tables, black and white; 8 Line drawings, black and white; 39 Halftones, black and white; 47 Illustrations, black and white

Review Quotes "Given the soaring number of library patrons who are 50 years or older, this book couldn't be more timely. . . . Although the book is, obviously, most concerned with the population mentioned in its title, many of the ideas listed will have broader appeal. . . . [T]his is a very thorough resource that should prove useful to libraries that seek to more effectively serve their senior patrons." --Booklist Online "A valuable guide to instruct and inspire public librarians in launching or expanding programs and services for adults 50+... a welcome and informative addition to the professional collection." --Public Library Quarterly About the Author Reneé K. There is surprisingly little known about affect in science education. Despite periodic forays into monitoring students' attitudes-toward-science, the effect of affect is too often overlooked. Beyond Cartesian Dualism gathers together contemporary theorizing in this axiomatic area. In fourteen chapters, senior scholars of international standing use their knowledge of the literature and empirical data to model the relationship between cognition and affect in science education. Their revealing discussions are grounded in a broad range of educational contexts including school classrooms, universities, science centres, travelling exhibits and refugee camps, and explore an array of far reaching questions. What is known about science teachers' and students' emotions? How do emotions mediate and moderate instruction? How might science education promote psychological resilience? How might educators engage affect as a way of challenging existing inequalities and practices? This book will be an invaluable resource for anybody interested in science education research and more generally in research on teaching, learning and affect. It offers educators and researchers a challenge, to recognize the mutually constitutive nature of cognition and affect.
This book explores the development, trends and research of library and information sciences (LIS) in the digital age. Inside, readers will find research and case studies written by LIS experts, educators and theorists, most of whom have visited China, delivered presentations there and drafted their articles based on feedback they received. As a result, readers will discover the LIS issues and concerns that China and the international community have in common. The book first introduces the opportunities and challenges faced by the library and information literacy profession and discusses the key role of librarians in the future of information literacy education. Next, it covers trends in LIS education by examining the vision of the iSchool movement and detailing its practice in Syracuse University. The book then covers issues in information seeking and retrieval by showing how visual data mining technology can be used to detect the relationship and pattern between terms on the Q&A of a social media site. It also includes a case study regarding tracing information seeking behavior and usage on a multimedia website. Next, the book stresses the importance of building an academic accreditation framework for scientific datasets, explores the relationship between bibliometrics and university rankings, and details the birth and development of East Asian Libraries in North America. Overall, the book offers readers insight into the changing nature of LIS, including the electronic dissemination of information, the impact of the Internet on libraries, the changing responsibilities of library professionals, the new paradigm for evaluating information, and characteristics and functions of today's library personnel. 30 Illustrations, color; 19 Illustrations, black and white; XIV, 177 p. 49 illus., 30 illus. in color.

CHICAGO – Libraries are not just about what they have for people, but what they do for and with people. With communities still recovering from the Great Recession, academic, school and public libraries continue to transform and shift resources and services to meet the needs of tech-savvy patrons. This and other library trends of the past year are detailed in the ALA’s 2016 State of America’s Libraries report, released today in recognition of National Library Week, April 10 – 16, 2016.
This work is a contribution to the popularization, knowledge, practice, integration and institutionalization of Tontines in Cameroon. The author has observed, practiced and described the functioning and mutations in Tontines, which use the techniques and instruments of money markets and function as such. With the aim of achieving the conventional or unconventional formalization of Tontines, the author launches the creation of an ethical mutual fund (FCPE) and calls on research or investment funds to take part. By demonstrating the immediate profitability of the capital invested, the other short-term objective of the fund is to support the costs of deepening observations on the practice and trends of tontines from the inside, in order to better integrate them \"in fine\", into a central body that he calls \"The National Mutual Bank of Tontines\". This book is intended for all audiences sensitive to development issues, more specifically for leaders in developing countries, entrepreneurs, teachers and students.
Formally launched in 2014, ALA's Center for the Future of Libraries works to identify emerging trends relevant to libraries and the communities they serve, promote futuring and innovation techniques to help librarians and library professionals shape their future, and build connections with experts and innovative thinkers to help libraries address emerging issues. The first volume in a new series presented in partnership with the Center, Anonymity explores the roles and ramifications of this hallmark of technology. In the virtual realm, anonymity means that such bedrock values of librarianship as privacy, free speech, and intellectual freedom coexist uneasily with the proliferation of fake news, sexist and racist sentiments, and repugnant ideologies. As trusted guardians of knowledge, libraries and librarians can fill a growing need for reputable information and open dialog. Macrina, founder and director of the Library Freedom Project and a core contributor to the Tor Project, along with co-author Cooper of The Intercept, discuss apps (Whisper, Secret) and forums (Reddit) that promote anonymity as a central feature, even as so-called true anonymity remains elusive because of pervasive user data tracking. They also examine how anonymous content has become valuable fodder for both news organizations and clickbait websites. Will the rise of anonymity and the vulnerabilities it exposes, especially for governments and businesses, lead to a movement against it? Or have our society and its technology passed the point of no return? Bringing issues and viewpoints from outside the profession into the conversation, this book will encourage libraries to think about anonymity and what it means for the future of our institutions.
The works of Al Margen criticize the current patterns of behavior in society and propose a reflection on issues that are often set aside. Though dark and macabre, his art is sobering and speaks the unfortunate truth about modernity.
History is a subject that many adored in school. Studying the past can change our perspective and explain why things happened the way they did. And learning fun tidbits like how Cleopatra’s beauty was out of this world or that Napoleon was extremely short made it even more intriguing, right?

This volume is of interest to science educators, graduate students, and classroom teachers. The book will also be an important addition to any scholarly library focusing on science education, science literacy, and writing. This book is unique in that it synthesizes the research of the three leading researchers in the field of writing to learn science: Carolyn S. Wallace, Brian Hand, and Vaughan Prain. It includes a comprehensive review of salient literature in the field, detailed reports of the authors' own research studies, and current and future issues on writing in science. The book is the first to definitely answer the question, \"Does writing improve science learning?\". Further, it provides evidence for some of the mechanisms through which learning occurs. It combines both theory and practice in a unique way. Although primarily a tool for research, classroom teachers will also find many practical suggestions for using writing in the science classroom.

ELI surveys every year the wildly complex landscape of teaching and learning. Here are the Key Issues in Teaching & Learning for 2016.
School librarians/media specialists often lament about how to collaborate with classroom teachers. I’ve seen many suggestions online about doing this. To be honest, it’s quite difficult, especially if you have a fixed schedule, or provide contractual “release time” for the classroom teachers. Some of us are so scheduled with classes that there is barely enough […]

If you're the kind of reader who usually skips the Preface (I am), you can certainly do that. It's probably valuable, though, for me to spend a little time describing the structure of this book to orient you to the way the argument unfolds. My intention was to try to find the best possible blend of theory and practice. I believe there are plenty of excellent books describing the theoretical underpinnings of qualitative research in education (Denzin & Lincoln, 1994, 2000; Eisner, 1998; Guba & Lincoln, 1989; Lincoln & Guba, 1985). A number of those books are cited here, and their arguments summarized. There are also books that report qualitative studies using narrative methods (Melko, 1998; Harold, 2000; Wolcott, 1973). There are fewer books that focus on describing in detail how to conduct these studies (Anderson, Kerr & Nihlen, 1994; Van Manen, 1990; Wolcott, 1990) for an audience that is not already familiar with both the methods and the philosophical commitments that underpin qualitative research. This book is intended to do all of these things to some extent, or to refer you to other authors who I think do them well, but its original contribution is in using as a concrete example a particular research study that I completed. This allows me to reflect on the processes and practices, and particularly the choices, involved in qualitative classroom research, and to illustrate those reflections in a very practical way.
The fifth edition of this classic reader retains many of the articles that have made the book a must-assign for classes on development and political economy, but has been updated with 14 new chapters that look even more deeply at long-term factors that help to explain the origins and current trends in the gap between rich and poor. An entirely new section focuses on natural resource and environmental issues, and the appendix of wealth and inequality indicators has been fully revised. The editors' short introduction to each selection, highlighting its significance, remains a key feature of the book.

Digital Disruption and Electronic Resource Management in Libraries identifies issues in the management of e-resources. The paradigm shift from Electronic Resources to Electronic Resource Management (ERM) has meant significant change for libraries and their users. One of the most important functions of a library is to provide information in electronic format. Libraries provide access to a wide variety of resources. A major challenge for libraries and librarians is therefore the management of this diversity of e-resources. ERM has emerged in this context. This book gives theoretical and practical information to assist librarians with ERM. It discusses broad trends and specific topics in the current landscape. It is devoted to theory, history, lifecycle, ERM systems, and the management of e-resources.
A global view of health offers a richer understanding of ways of measuring, improving and sustaining health both in individual national settings and in the context of a strongly interconnected world. This book draws on social scientific insights and explanations to examine trends in global health. Moving beyond an epidemiological analysis, the authors use a social determinants framework and life course approaches to offer a critical introduction to the study of global health. Through individual chapters focusing on topics such as health policy, global governance, health systems and health-related protests, the authors present the scope of global health studies and introduce readers to broader ranging issues such as globalization and political forces. Key themes such as power, inequality and inequity - and their impact on health on a global scale - recur throughout the book. International examples and case studies are used to illustrate the discussion, which is further supported by opportunities for reflection and further reading. This book will be an important resource for students studying global health and will have broad relevance to those undertaking health, health-related and allied health professional courses.
