I found this amazing haunted house cut file from TeamKnK.com and immediately wanted to use it at the library.UPDATE: It seems to be deactivated, so h ere is pdf:the For our October Family Craft Night, patrons were invited to come decorate and assemble the haunted house treat bags. How To Details Once I uploaded the files onto the library's Cricut, I ungrouped the image. Then I enlarged the house (just the house, not the inserts) to 10.6"x16.54". I got black poster board and trimmed it down
Tuesday evening we hosted a Harvest Festival for families and with 50 children registered, we ended up with over 70 in attendance (thank goodness we had enough supplies!) and I think everyone had a great time! We had ten different stations for little ones and had some wonderful help from our Junior Friends (students in grades 5 – 8) to help us make sure everything ran smoothly. I love these festival-type programs because families can do as much or as little as they want and aren’t required to stay for the entire program. We ran the program for just an hour from 6:30 – 7:30pm and the families stayed for about 45 minutes for the most part and then took the kids home to get them to bed. We also were very specific in choosing are activities, staying away from more “Halloween” activities, and focusing more on fall fun! Festival Stations Which Squirrel Has the Nut The typical carnival game is where you hide a ball or in our case, an acorn, under one of three cups and you mix them around and have the person guess where the acorn is. I used Solo cups with a clip art picture of a squirrel glued to them. Leaf Craft This is a simple craft that requires leaves, Popsicle sticks, and googly eyes. I was going to collect leaves outside, but we ended up just picking up some fake leaves from the dollar store. Leaf Tic-Tac-Toe Your typical game of tic-tac-toe, but instead of x’s and o’s, we used two different types of leaves and a large piece of poster board for the tic-tac-toe board. Read Aloud We had a middle school student help us with this station and she read The Ugly Pumpkin by Dave Horowitz every ten minutes throughout the hour. Guess the Pumpkin’s Weight An easy station, a rather large pumpkin, and the kids can write down their guess as to how much it wears. Our pumpkin weighed in at 7.75 lbs (but felt much heavier!) Gourd Bowling We used empty water bottles with a little rice in the bottom for the pins and those bumpy round gourds for the bowling ball. Find the pumpkin in the haystack We bought a small bale of hay from a local garden center and put in one of those big tubs and hide little toy pumpkins in the hay for the kids to find. Candy Corn Spoon Relay This event can be done in any number of ways, most of the kids just tried to scoop as much candy corn on a spoon and move it from one bowl to another bowl a few feet away during a specific amount of time. Pumpkin’ Chuckin’ This was an adorable activity, but make sure you have regular-size toilet paper rolls, apparently, I buy the super, extra big ones because it was a lot harder to wrap them in the orange felt. Paint Your Own Pumpkin This was the only station that required anything from the families themselves. If they wanted to participate, they had to bring a pumpkin with them, we had all the paint and brushes.

We spend many afternoons at our neighborhood library. At one point our time switched from going to find particular books, to just hanging out. For hours. Reading, exploring, asking questions, sharing, talking.... I wanted to share a quick list of fun things you can do at the library other than just check out books. Any of these ideas would be a great boredom buster. Just tell your kid you have an adventure in mind and embrace the mission with verve. You will have a great time! Please share the interesting, fun or just odd things your family does at the library in the comments! You can download a copy to keep in your purse or journal here. 1. Look at microfilm from your birthday, or a hundred years ago, or when grandma was born. 2. Look for the biggest book in the library. Take your picture with it. 3. Browse the travel section, find a place you want to visit, make some plans. 4. Go to the cookbook area, choose a recipe, go the store, get the ingredients and cook it that day. 5. Everyone find a poem, read it out loud and then copy it into your journal. 6. Choose a random CD, listen to it all the way through. 7. Kind Bomb 8. Scan the books of quotes. Find a good one and write it outside on the sidewalk with chalk. 9. Bring paper and colored pencils. Draw from the easy I-Can-Draw-Books for an hour. 10. Take a present to the librarians. 11. Leave a thoughtful review on a post-it note in a book you really loved. 12. Find out what services your library offers. Ellison machine? Study prints? Study rooms? 13. Occupy! Have a meeting, writer’s group, books club, homeschool co op, adventure planning committee at the library. 14. Make photocopies of your hand, funny book titles, weird images.... 15. Make a list of suggested books and media for your library to buy. Make the library YOUR library. 16. Arrange a library tour. 17. Browse books on the flora and fauna of your area. Learn to identify something new. 18. Check out the corresponding children’s or adult section to your favorite area (reptiles, art, mystery...) 19. Ask about the special collections. 20. Read a biography from the children’s sections on someone you know very little about.(I choose Justin Beiber). 21. Find a baby name book, make a list of funny name combinations, choose a new name for the day. 22. Hunt for authors with your same last name. 23. Look in the reference section. What is the weirdest reference book you can find? 24. Buy old magazines, cut them up and make happy posters, rehang in the library. 25. Make sure each kid has their own library card and bag. Do not fuss about late fees. Ever. ______________________________________________ Are you interested in infusing your family life with more creativity and connection? The past few months my students have been making feathers for a group mural. This idea was inspired by my friend and celebrity in the art community, Cassie Stephens! Head on over to her blog and check out her magical art teacher'n treasures at Cassie Stephen's Blog!! Her original inspo was international street artist, Kelsey Montague. Her inspiring murals challenge people to ask the question "What Lifts you" "What makes your heart Soar?" My students are going to be writing about their passions and inspirations that "lifts" them! I want each student that comes to my art class to feel as though they are walking out with wings on their back, so they can bravely rise up to their dreams with courage and passion! I want them to feel confident in themselves and know that the sky is the limit! First, students painted on watercolor paper with tempera paint using a value gradient of tints and shades using one color plus black on the left and white on the right. They had to blend the colors so thet the different shades did not look like stripes One group did primary and secondary colors red, orange, yellow, green blue, and violet. The next group would paint intermediate colors, red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red=violet Fourth and fifth graders used 9' by 24' paper and 3rd graders used smaller paper the next class, students then traced different shapes of feathers using white prisma color pencils and cut them out then they decorated them with unique lines and designs with white prisma color pencils My wonderful and extremely talented student teacher, Naz Kaya Erdal and I layed them out on three large sheets of black butcher paper until the feathers looked symmetrical. Once we finished the shape, we taped each feather down to the paper with painter's tape Then I hung that bad boy with TONS and tons and TONS of staples!! The next morning the kids were SO excited to find their feathers turned into GIANT wings!!! I hope the parents who come to visit will snap a pic in front of the wings and post to #ArtisFly and #riseupandsoar hashtags for social media!

Ever have one of THOSE weeks? Where life is chaotic, stressful, and messy? Where things don't go your way and you find yourself late at night picking apart all the things that went wrong? Well... we just had one of those weeks. (Ok... if I'm going to be honest... probably one of those months...) And I wish I could say that I was patient and loving and wise and kind and strong... but I wasn't. When life spirals out of control, I find myself doing two things- (1) taking naps and (2) doing easy art and craft activities. It's surprising how these two activities revive my spirits. So today I wanted to share this really easy art activity that my preschooler and I recently worked on together. Inspired by Meri Cherry, we made our own GIANT family process art. This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! For my full disclosure, click here. Several months ago we purchased a GIANT CANVAS from our local thrift/scrap store. (We got ours for $4! Score! But if you can't find them where you are, you could also just purchase canvases online too.) Our canvas was already half painted light blue, but we didn't mind. On our first day working with the canvas, we grabbed our tempera paint and just painted the whole thing however we wanted. (It was quite freeing, to work on a large canvas with no intentions in mind. We just enjoyed painting it however we felt.) Several days later (once our paint dried), we grabbed our oil pastels and kwik stix solid tempera paint and got working again. :) As you can see, we're both big fans of vibrant colors! Here's a photo of our finished (for now) artwork. I look forward to adding on more details and colors and watching the canvas evolve over time. And that's all. I hope this post finds you well, friends. As always, here's our current list of favorite art books for you and your kiddos to connect with and enjoy!
