My cousin's son was having a construction themed party so it was time to revamp a cake I made for my son at his own digger party a year and a half ago. The cake was yellow and this was my first attempt at CHOCOLATE buttercream! Yum! The chocolate buttercream turned out to be the perfect color for mud. When I originally made this cake for my son's 3rd birthday I used regular buttercream and added brown food coloring. I wasn't completely happy with the color. This is much richer looking and tasting! The yellow piping is out of regular buttercream. I just made a large batch of regular buttercream, scooped out what I needed to pipe the edges, then added the cocoa to the rest! Super easy! The road is made of crushed Oreos and melted butter. I can't believe it took me this long to discover chocolate buttercream! Now...what should I make next? Just to let you know...I have added a full tutorial on how to make this cake with "grass" instead of "mud"! Check out my May 2012 post titled "Cars Cake Tutorial". It gives a step by step on how to prepare your cake board and how to get the road (number) just right. On the tutorial I filled in the rest of the cake with grassy buttercream, but if you're going for the construction look, you can just use chocolate buttercream instead and run some tires through it for tracks! Hopefully the step by step will help you out! Good luck and happy baking!
My son is OBSESSED with play-doh so I knew that was our only option in regards to a theme. We invited all our "workers" to the play-doh factory where they "clocked in" and got their uniforms. Everyone went through research and development, the production line, and packaging. All the kids had a blast, especially the birthday boy who didn't leave research and development for over an hour!

Calendar Photo by Amy LV Happy birthday to all leap year babies! Students - Today's poem is a holiday poem, a math poem, and a riddle poem! The other day, when I sat down to write, I got thinking about what a special year this is...leap year! I stopped to think about those with birthdays on February 29 and how they can only celebrate their true birth date every four years. Writing a math riddle poem is a neat little exercise. Just come up with a math problem in your head (or on paper) and then play around with it and with words, turning it into a verse. Having a leap year birthday puts a person in a special sort of club, much like being a lefty. And so of course, there is a group you can belong to. It's called The Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies. You can read about why founder Peter Brouwer founded this group here at the LOS ANGELES TIMES. Did you know that there is a special newspaper that only comes out on leap days? It's in France, and it's called La Bougie du Sapeur! To read about some children who have leap year birthdays, check out THE WASHINGTON POST. To read a bout a leap year couple, check out npr. Too, npr has some suggestions about how to spend this extra 24 hours... And now for a few words from Marilla, NY native, Scott Gowanlock, about having a leap year birthday. I love having a leap year birthday because I can trick people when they ask my actual birthday. They don't actually believe I am actually five years old, so when I show them my license, they are amazed. Also, 75% of the time I can have a 2-day birthday because I was born in February so we celebrate it on the 28th, but I was also born the day after the 28th which is March 1. This gives me a 2-day birthday! We usually celebrate it on whichever weekend falls closest to the day, either before or after. When I was born, I was supposed to be on the news as I was the first Buffalo leap year baby born in 1992. However, on that same day, a woman had her second leap year baby so they interviewed her instead. Thank you, Scott. Happy birthday! Did you figure out the answer to this poem's question? { Marguerite's 4th Birthday Party } My two daughters are big fans of Elephant and Piggie, the hilarious characters from Mo Willems' books. In one of his stories, 'I Am Invited To A Party!' Gerald and Piggie are so excited about their invitation, Gerald starts to give advice to Piggie on party attire. Spoiler alert!: The party ends up being a fancy costume pool party and thanks to Gerald the two friends get the dress code right. I thought it would be fun to recreate this for my daughters and their little friends, so I sent a copy of the book to each guest with the party invitation and asked them to come prepared ;-) It was the perfect occasion for them to wear their favorite costume, and I must say they didn't disappoint us! We had Elsa from Frozen, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, an astronaut, a movie star, a policeman, a firefighter, Merlin... I created a 'sweet' table to reflect a bit of the craziness and chaos of the book; silly and festive! When I asked Marguerite what food she wanted to serve, she promptly and fittingly answered, "Pigs in a Blanket!" :-) And of course there was a photo booth where all the props were edible. It was a huge hit! For the cake we had our two favorite characters wearing their party costumes from the book, and of course we asked for a funfetti cake! PARTY! PARTY! PARTY! For entertainment the children took instant photos of themselves, and we colored some pages from Elephant and Piggie books. We also hosted a Genie who made the children laugh and giggle. The take-home favors were a delicious "Elephant and Piggie" jelly bean mix which was a great complement to the adorable book we sent to each child before the party.
