Hebrews 12:1&2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us… look to Jesus.” Tell them that they are going to hear a Bible Story again today that shows how God works through two brothers, Jacob and Esau. God uses the brother’s strengths as well as their weaknesses to show God’s power and might. 5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is about Jacob and Esau. Read pages 50-62 from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic). 6) Text: Today’s Text is: The Lord said to Rebekah, “and two peoples, born of you, shall be divided; The one shall be stronger than the other, The elder shall serve the younger.” Genesis 25:23 7) Craft: Birthright Sold for a bowl of Soup- Clay Craft. Prepare “air dry” clay ahead of time, if you wish, or use plasticine. Make enough so that each child can make a small pot. Bring a small round cup and a rolling pin to cut out standard size bases for all the pots. You may wish to prepare a sample a few days ahead of time. At craft time, help the children roll a flat section and cut out bases for each child. Divide remaining dough into even lumps for each child and demonstrate how to roll a “snake” in your hands. Coil the length of clay around the base of the pot to make an old fashioned soup pot. Clay will dry after it has gone home. Send home “pots” in a Styrofoam bowl/plate with today’s text attached to it. If you like, you could even give the children some red lentils to put in their pots! We have tried this with a variety of different "clays" and find that plasticine (even the inexpensive kind that you can buy at a dollar store) is the easiest for kids to work with and provides the most satisfying results. Same and Different….cut out the shape of a man (2 for each child and have them glue one one side of a piece of construction paper. Have the children decorate the shapes with crayons, markers and scraps of fabric to show how the two brothers are same and different. Provide scraps of fake fur if possible! Write “Esau” and “Jacob” on the two sides of each child’s sheet. If you have time, also write down a few words to describe each brother using the child’s ideas. 8) Closing Prayer: say the Lord's Prayer together with the children. 9) Going Home: Sing the closing together. Then, check to see if all the children have collected their crafts and coloring sheets before they go home. Say goodbye and tell them that you enjoyed learning about God together and were happy to have them today! You were, weren’t you? There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different sides they should see the suggestion of a face and they can begin sketching. I'm going to show them how to use the lines to begin the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin etc... When they have a face they like they should go over it with sharpie. Now they can use watercolor to finish the portrait. I am going to emphasize complementary colors which is another way to force them to be more abstract, but also something Picasso did in his paintings. Student Work I passed out a copy of this worksheet to help them think of different ways to make the features.

The Draw My Picture Game is a fun way to get children to practice their speaking and listening skills.
Relief sculpture is an art form that is midway between painting and sculpture in the round. It is a process in which the subject stands out or projects a surface from the background. The surface can be several levels including high relief (deep or almost in the round) or low relief (shallow) or anywhere in between. To create their relief sculptures, seventh graders first learned about the difference between shape and form. A shape is two-dimensional (it has height and width) whereas a form is three-dimensional (it not only has height and width but also depth). Students experimented creating forms out of basic paper shapes by rolling, bending, folding and gluing them. After trying a variety of forms, students chose their favorite and created sixty variations of that form. Students then considered space and balance to position their forms into their final sculptural arrangement. These look awesome on display as they protrude from the wall- it's hard to really see the depth in these individual photos, but the shadows and dimension are super cool up close! Well, in my 14 years at Zamo we never had rain to contend with during our Celebration of Art festivities... until last night, that is. I must say, that although unusual for San Diego in July, the rain did not dampen the spirit of the event at all:) Attendance was robust and their were tons of smiles to brighten any gloom that drops from the sky may have brought. Again, our incredible classroom teachers and staff were amazing while leading 10 different activities for our community to participate in. Our PTF rocked ticket and food sales. Our administration hung tough in the wet silent auction area. We were visited by our School Board President, the San Diego County VAPA Coordinator, and this morning our SDUSD Superintendent stopped by too. I am so proud of what our kids accomplish every year. It's so great to be able to share the creative work of our students with our school community and VAPA decision makers at the district level and beyond. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand in making the event another great evening of art making and art appreciation! We couldn't do it without you. our school musicians kicking off the evening. rain! I always like to start the year with a review of lines. Every grade level does a project that reintroduces all the different ways to make lines. By 4th and 5th grade, we are ready to turn those lines into something really amazing! These projects are partially inspired by the many "zentangle" lessons out there, but I don't actually teach the zentangle method. I have the students start with a line pattern and then fill it with doodles. We focused on contrast-making some areas dark, and some light. I love when I look around the room and tongues are hanging out. That's how you KNOW the kids are concentrating! We started this project by taking a digital picture of each student, then cutting off the hair and attaching it to a piece of cardboard. These long pieces of poster board were donated to my classroom last year, so we put them to good use! The kids used eraser and pencil to plan the shape of their hair, then used thick and thin sharpies to divide into sections and create the patterns. We used colored markers to create the background and help the line designs stand out. 4th/5th Grade Bad Hair Days You guys, my students are amazing. They seriously impress me and surprise me every day. We began this project in art class, and I sent them to their classroom with the expectation that they would finish their black and white patterns on their own in their classroom. Not only did they finish them, but they came back BRILLIANT! We finished the marker background today in the art room.
