We learned: Nigeria has the largest population in Africa It has the largest butterfly diversity of any country. Is home to a few endangered animal species. Has the third largest river delta in the world. Really enjoyed reading the folk tales from Nigeria. The flag is green and white. The green means farming and the white means unity/peace. The country is in Africa. The children wear uniforms to school. They speak English. They pump oil and sell it to make fuel. The capital is: Abuja. One of the animals that we looked at this week is the Gorilla. Werribee Open Range Zoo now has Gorilla's on site so I rang Paul yesterday morning and asked if we could come in and see the Gorilla's behind the scenes as a wrap up for our week in Nigeria. He contacted those in charge who said YES. So at 4 pm we were off to see Gorilla's up close and personal. All visitors have to wear masks. Just look at the size of his hand ! That's 2" weld mesh. There are three Gorillas at WORZ. They are fed by seperate keepers to prevent them arguing over the food. Here is a 20 second clip of Paul feeding one. This one on one time is also used to check on the animals well being and keeps up with their daily training. ... "but Mrs. Sommerville, his LEGS start with Ll!" Why, yes they do! While making our Ll word list this morning, I asked the Stars to think of animals that start with Ll, and told them that we'd use construction paper at our art center to make the animal(s) they named. While "ladybug" and "llama" and "leopard" made the list, it was one of our favorite characters, Kwaku Anansi that captured the Stars' draw-cut-glue spirit. Spider? Not an Ll word. Arachnid? Not an Ll word. Anansi? No, that's not an Ll word either. And then the solution: L-e-g-s. Works for me! Here's what you need: I scanned a page from our storybook and highlighted the shapes that the Stars could use to make Anansi: Students used white crayons to draw Anansi's head onto the large black square (pencil shows up fine too): Several Stars mentioned that Anansi has the letter T on his face, which we cut like so: A hole punch made perfect nostrils: ... and black rectangles formed Anansi's legs: He's got legs, and he knows how to use them!

“Kids on the Path” was designed to guide school personnel on how to plan, build, and maintain a labyrinth at their school site. It was first published in 2007. It stresses the importance of total buy-in from: teachers, staff, parents and especially the students. The book provides labyrinth-themed lessons for the classroom in all subject areas: math, science, art, music, health and wellness, affective/social domains, language arts, art, social studies. The book has been sold across North and South America, Europe, Australia and Africa. Perhaps the popularity of labyrinths in schools today is a result of the frantic pace of our society. Children feel pressured to succeed academically, to excel at sports, to be popular, to participate in a multitude of after-school activities and to please their parents and teachers. The labyrinth is a tool that allows calming of the mind, body, and spirit – for children, teachers, and school personnel. Enjoy walking the path of this book in creating your labyrinth.
