At our school, we have two art shows a year: one in the fall, and a large one in the spring. Hanging hundreds of pieces of art can be a huge challenge so I want to share with you how we hang our work. Our large DIY displays are simple to make. Here is what you will need: CHEAP black fabric (our panels have sheer stretchy fabric that is opaque) How much you need depends on the size of insulation board you get but you will probably need around 7 or 8 yards per double panel. Gaff or Duct tape (Gaff works better but is more expensive. Our maintenance department has given us Gaff tape- so ask yours!) Foam insulation boards (about 1 to 2 inches thick) You will need two insulation sheets per panel. These run around $10 dollars a sheet. Cover one side of each foam board with fabric and secure the fabric on the back side with Gaff tape. When you have two covered, place them side by side, fabric facing down, and tape their seam together. Stand them up like an open book and you have your display panel. Its easy, cheap, and quick! Here is what our art show looked like:

Christianity is about living in relationship with God. Can any relationship be strong if there is not good communication? Prayer is an integral part of being a Christian. Some children naturally share their hearts with God. For others, prayer is not instinctive so we need to be intentional about teaching prayer as a way of life. In our family, we've used a variety of materials to teach prayer. Teaching Your Child How to Pray is a wonderfully thorough resource. It contains practical ideas for helping your child develop a habit of prayer as well as enriching your own prayer life. There are some really beautiful analogies here that helped me explain the purpose of prayer to my son. Probably the most unique aspect of this book is the developmental stages of prayer based on the lives of Samuel and Jesus. Explanations for each of these 6 stages includes scriptural context, examples of what is involved in each stage, approximate ages, suggestions for teaching and for transitioning to the next stage, cautions, and key Bible verses. Faith Begins @ Home Prayer is one of the companion books for Faith @ Home. This slim book is a very quick read. Despite its small size, it is a treasure trove of creative (and fun!) approaches to incorporating prayer into family life. Below are some of our favorites, but there are twenty four kid-friendly, innovative prayer ideas presented in the book. circle prayer (holding hands and praying around the circle, squeezing the next person's hand to signal when you are finished) popcorn prayer (complete-the-sentence prayers with an exciting twist) prayer calendar (assigning specific topics that need regular prayer to a particular date each month) prayer maps (support for missions and peoples in need) characteristics of God ( completing the phrase "God is . . . " and turning it into praise) prayer walks (praying about things or people you see as you walk along). Lord, Teach Me to Pray for Kids (Discover 4 Yourself® Inductive Bible Studies for Kids) is a fun educational tool that uses inductive study to learn what the Bible says about prayer. The book has a fun military theme to captivate the attention of children. My son really enjoyed the puzzles. The activities throughout the book weren't just busywork. They were carefully designed to increase understanding. Because the book contains eight chapters of the Bible in their entirety as an appendix, there is no need to have a separate Bible to use it. This made it a convenient portable activity book. The target age for this book is 8-12 years old. We introduced it at a younger age, but the vocabulary presented a bit of a challenge. (The lessons rely heavily on words such as allegiance, submission, petition, and intercession.) It can be challenging to find Bible study books that are especially interesting to boys. This one definitely fits the bill! This prayer poster is another resource we have used in our family. It took me a grand total of 5 minutes to create it. I just taped 5 envelopes to a piece of posterboard. The top envelope can hold a pen and some index cards. On the other four envelopes, I wrote the words: "Praise," "Thanks," "Sorry," and "Please help." The poster was hung in a high traffic area of the house where we see it often. If a prayer idea occurs to us, we can write it on an index card and slip it in the appropriate envelope. This really helps us remember what we want to pray about. I recently printed, laminated, and attached magnets to the free prayer printables at When You Rise. (Fantastic blog, by the way!) I love the idea of praying scripture over my children and am looking forward to giving this a try. Other prayer ideas I love: Prayer Pail by Lu Bird Baby. Broken mirrors? No, Cubist art! We divided our paper with 5-6 lines to create a spilt background. By looking at a still life projected onto the screen, we were able to create a series of objects that "shift" when they overlap a line. Crayon and pastels add explosive color. Well done 8th graders!

During every kindergarten class today we heard repeated choruses of "Ooooo" and "Ahhhh" as students dropped primary colored liquid watercolors on wet board and watched it move together creating new colors. We started the lesson with a quick talk about primary colors and a really short video ( a minute and a half) from Sesame Street on Primary Colors. My inspiration for this lesson was a first grade project I saw on Pinterest here that focused on Mondrian. I changed the focus but went for a similar grid pattern. They were using a board that was divided into 6 areas with masking tape. Each section was a little mini-painting. (Next week we peel off the tape to reveal the white lines of the board.) Kids also had the option of sprinkling salt on their wet paint -- that brought a whole new series of "Oh, Look!!" comments!! My plan for next week is for the kids to brush off the remaining salt crystals, peel off the tape and arrange the pieces so that the lines meet up and create a cooperative large work. I'll be sure to take pictures to post:) If I were doing this with older kids I would have them also outline the white lines with a fine black marker, like this: A large focus of this lesson was use of the brush: how to clean it between colors, how not to smash its hair, how to dry it using a sponge, etc. Even so, these are kindergarteners and that yellow paint didn't stay yellow at all the tables. SO, WORD OF WARNING: if you try this, be sure to have some extra little containers of yellow that you can use to replace the dirty ones!!!! This table did a great job of cleaning their brushes and keeping their yellow clean!! After cleaning up, the kids came to the rug for a reading of Mouse Paint to again reinforce mixing primary colors. What a fun day it was!!

Yes, I’ve learned my lesson and will not be putting my blocks, top, etc. on the floor anymore. I don’t need to have one of my girls cough up hair balls on my work. A few days ago, a hair ball was on the landing on the stairs going down to my studio. No, I don’t need to find surprises on my work. So, what to do? Walls in my design studio are almost non-existent except for one area where there are sliding doors and I have a piece of batting type of material clipped in front of the doors and that is used all the time. Problem though, it is not tall enough and you all know by now that I make mostly large queen size quilts. DH came to the rescue. He went out and purchased some rigid Styrofoam boards 24” wide x 86” high. My boards fold up like a screen (accordion style) to store out of the way when not needed. Tape the seams as shown. A piece of flannelette sheeting is pinned in place (with an exception). Because the boards are to be folded, pin the sheet in place until you reach the seam that was taped on the backside. Smooth the sheet as shown by following the arrows, pinning as you go. Now try closing like a screen to see if it works. If not, make adjustments until it does fold properly. Here is my Lover’s Knot on the board. Here it is all folded up. I use a LOT of pins for sticking my blocks in place and you will need pins if you plan to close it up with just single blocks on the board or if you move the design wall around from place to place. The added bonus to these boards is turning it around and placing another flannelette sheet on the backside and another design wall is ready to use. Two in one ….. now how is that for space saving? I hope that this helps anyone out there that has a problem with lack of design walls. BTW …. my girls love to play hide and seek behind my board. Have a great day!
