NYC-based strategy and design agency Combo have partnered with luxury leather goods brand ASHYA, founded by American and Jamaican design duo Ashley Cimone and Moya Annece, to craft their identity – reflecting the tactility, elegance and legacy of their products in the process. “There are very few American heritage brands owned and created by Black and Indigenous people because of colonisation and slavery,” Founder and Head of Design Kapono Chung tells us, discussing the context of the brand. “When creating ASHYA’s identity, we wanted storytelling to be at the core,” citing the erasure of language and culture through colonial takeover as a core motive. “Because it’s the way that culture is retained and passed from one generation to the next,” he explains, subsequently manifesting this idea in ASHYA’s logomark. An emblem that acts innately as an heirloom – an object preserving story, personality and culture.

Sitting in the heart of Emeryville’s fast-growing life sciences cluster, RATIO is an innovation campus on Hollis Street, creating a space for the next big ideas and discoveries in biosciences. What used to be the Hollis Business Centre, owned by Beacon Capital Partners – a tenant-focused real estate investment firm with a 75-year legacy – was transformed into a campus that encourages exploration, by San Francisco-based boutique brand strategy and design studio Landscape. Equipped with state-of-the-art lab facilities, RATIO needed an identity that spoke of its focus on science, innovation, and the myriad possibilities of the future.

It’s been nearly a century since the iconic Times New Roman first graced our pages, and now, Parker has introduced PS Times – their contemporary twist on the classic serif. Crafted in collaboration with Type Designer Jesse Amborn, this typeface is the proprietary brand font for Parker and comes equipped with a variety of ligatures, stylistic sets, and symbols, uniquely tailored for the Seattle-based design studio. “In selecting a type system that ultimately supports a diverse portfolio, our thoughts went toward the often ubiquitous classics,” Amborn tells us, explaining the idea for the project. “It needed to be functional while not being too expressive to distract from the work itself, so the restrained editorial language of Times felt apt.” In reimagining this iconic typeface, PS Times retains the recognisable cap and x-heights but brings modern adjustments like shorter descenders and a variety of ligatures. “At first glance, our goal was to make it read as ‘Times,’ while also being a surprisingly tailored version,” says Amborn. “We wanted to recall much of the same understated editorial nature that has made it popular and functional for so many years while reimagining it for new applications.”
