Antique cutlery box Northern Italy, second half of the 19th century It measures 11.61 in x 8.07 in x 9.05 in (29.5 x 20.5 x 23 cm) lb 2.86 (kg 1.3) The state of conservation: Good. Some consumption of the leather in the lower part of the box. The interior has probably been altered. The polygonal base cutlery box, with a flat back which allows it to rest along the wall, is made of wood covered with light brown leather and is decorated "with small irons" (gilding embossed with iron tools) and floral motifs. The cover, made to match the shape of the container, shows a decoration in the center with a bipartite heraldic emblem with the crowned eagle of the Guidobono family and the snake devouring a man, the emblem of the Visconti family. The lack of colors prevents us from recognizing with certainty the branch of the family to which the coat of arms refers. However it is very probable that the heraldic emblem belonged to the Guidobono Visconti family, owner of the homonymous Palace of Tortona from the 17th century until 1762, when it was ceded to the city. The family, stemming from the Guidobono Cavalchini Garolfi branch, had already given birth, starting from 1400, to the Guidobono-Visconti, the counts of Castellaro Guidobono and Monleale, whose family died out towards the end of the nineteenth century. The inside of the box is divided into three scaled compartments and is entirely lined with green silk: the lack of another subdivision of the compartments suggests that the interior has been modified to contain letter paper. The lock and the handle of the box, made of wrought iron, are original. The key is missing. This type of object has a history closely connected to that of cutlery, which experienced swings of fortune at the European courts, according to changes in eating, and above all, social habits. From the middle of the seventeenth century, when the ritual of cutting the portions of meat to serve to the diners based on social rank lost much of its meaning during table ceremonies, the basic function of the knife moved away from being collective to individual, thus changing shapes based on the styles of the time. A revolutionary and, one could say, definitive change was then produced with the adoption of the en suite fork with the knife and, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with the introduction of other elements suitable for different types of food and various courses. The eighteenth century saw the affirmation of the new way of preparing the table. The rococo taste was represented by cutlery made with precious materials, often with porcelain and maiolica handles, some with chinoiserie decorations; therefore, it became necessary to make cutlery trays, containers suitable for storing and protecting these refined objects.

The Skeppshult "Boom" nutcracker is a fun and unusual way to crack into your favourite nuts. Simply drop the 10oz cast iron weight onto walnut or hazelnut shells to crack them open. The walnut wood tube also catches all the nut shells, so you can tip it neatly into the bin. The soft leather thong keeps the weight and pot together. This stylish Swedish nutcracker makes a brilliant gift. Swedish company Skeppshult (pronounced hep-salt) has been making cast iron products by hand since 1906. The process starts with raw iron that is heated to a searing 1,500°C in the furnaces. The molten iron is then cast into special moulds, made from sand which can withstand the extreme temperatures. Sand moulds can only be used once, and therefore each product is unique – no two items are exactly alike. Each sand mould is recycled and used for another product. Skeppshult seasons their cast iron with rapeseed oil (also called canola oil) from Osterlen to protect it from damage.
