Hi There! Lisa here, from Growing Firsties & I'm going to share a little bit about Growth Mindset today, which is based on Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck's work. Heads up that I do have some Amazon Affiliate links in this post. Should you choose to use the links, I'll earn some "circle money" as my daughter calls coins. :-) Half of my affiliate proceeds are for paying it forward - each month I receive earnings I give to my local food pantry/outreach services organization. The other half is spent on books and items for my classroom. With a growth mindset, people believe that through effort and practice, they can develop and improve their talents and abilities. In a fixed mindset, people believe that their talents and abilities are fixed...and that it's talent (not effort) that creates success. Woah. Years ago, I first began to think about mindset in terms of working with struggling students...those students where the learning is hard. Students, who, if they don't have the mindset to keep trying, will give up. Then what will they learn? My thinking expanded as I witnessed students labelled as gifted hitting a struggle academically and not knowing how to handle the struggle when they are unfamiliar with the resilience and effort needed. Then I realized that mindset, resilience & perseverance are critical for all of us. Regardless of age. #helloIhatecardio #gottadoitanyways You may have seen this Growing Firsties post from a few years ago, containing this freebie download. Or maybe this post from last summer all about perseverance. I am blessed to work at an amazing school! Some talented colleagues ran a book study on Dweck's Mindset book this year and it was such fun to re-read and discuss mindset with like-minded teachers! I also added Mindsets in the Classroom (by Mary Cay Ricci) to my collection. We read aloud some great books and I expanded my collection beyond the wonderful texts from Peter H. Reynolds (Ish, The Dot, Going Places...) One of my teammates asked me if I had a printable for our work on mindset and that gave me the motivation to put my swirling thoughts to work....Here's a little peek at the inside... Scroll down to download this freebie! :) You might be interested in reading an article by the always eloquently-thought-provoking Alfie Kohn "The Perils of Growth Mindset" education. You can get to it {right here}. Carol Dweck, author of Mindset, has written this EXCELLENT article...you'll definitely want to check it out! You can get to it {right here}. I have a Pinterest board called Mindset and I love pinning to it! You can check it out by clicking here or the screen shot below. You should really check out the Famous Failures video! It's amazing! We'd love to hear what you do to help build a growth mindset with your learners!

In the Spring time, it is the perfect time to introduce the life cycle of plants to your students. They are seeing new growth all around them.
Each year, when I teach place value, this is always my students' favorite game {my teammate gave it to me, she got it from uen.org}! I have modified it so that k-2 can play it! It's called Bull's Eye The students will play in groups of 3 (or in pairs). Each group needs a bull's eye (included in the download) and 6 paper clips. Each student needs their own recording sheet (included in the download). Player one throw each of their 5 paper clips on the bull's eye, one at a time, trying to get a bull's eye. {I had one of our school aides make me a set of bull's eye posters, but you don't have to do that because I've included a download for you} Player one then records their points on their recording sheet by counting how many paper clips landed on the 1's and 10's (there is also an expanded form and 100's recording sheet).

Strewing - a term coined by Sandra Dodd - means simply leaving interesting things out for your kids to discover on their own terms. A simple way to begin having a more learning filled home is to intentionally strew interesting things around. You could even have a designated table top that you use and change out regularly.Having a home that has an atmosphere of learning grows kids who learn all the time. If you enjoy planning ahead and organizing, you could have monthly themes, kind of like a deconstructed unit study. If you do this, I do recommend that you allow the kids to do what they like with the stuff, and not try to organize them. Let them explore on their own. Or, if you are a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type, like me, change it up when you come across something neat you would like your kids to discover. You also do NOT have to use a designated table top. I leave new library books on the coffee table, put a board game by the fireplace, or even put the globe on the dinner table for a great dinner conversation. Here are some ideas to get your imagination going with the possibilities: Science:A microscope (old-school, non computer connected ones are my favorite), samples to observe like a dead fly, a cat's claw or whisker, snake skin, fabric, etc. Experiments - baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, oil, milk, corn starch, and lots of little containers for mixing Magnetism - magnets, magnetic and non-magnetic metal objects, iron shavings in a sealed baggie Birds - binoculars, bird book, feathers, a nest, an egg (from the fridge), bird seed, bird house kit Insects - magnifying glasses, books on insects, microscope, jar for collecting, paper, pencils Math: Numbers - abacus, calculator, dice, cards, some board games like Monopoly, Yahtzee and Battleship Shapes - pattern blocks, Jenga, Legos, Magna-Tiles, K-Nex, geometric solids Measuring - ruler, compass, protractor, tape measure, graph paper, string History:Family - old family photos, family tree worksheet, maps, any small family heirlooms (not breakable is best for littles) like a quilt, a silver cup, a hat, etc. World War I - photo of ancestor in uniform, bucket of army men, popsicle sticks for building, map of battle lines, Snoopy
