Learn about Peru with kids: easy activities, resources and ideas to learn at home or in the classroom
Lexis was, for a long time, paid scant attention to in foreign language teaching. Over the last 20 years, however, vocabulary acquisition has become a focus of academic research. In particular, the Cognitive Linguistic perspective on foreign language learning offers a rich theoretical framework for research in this area, since it encapsulates both ease of learning and a more profound knowledge of the target language. Learning vocabulary in school contexts, however, is still strongly associated with rote learning in many parts of the world, that is, the repetition of items, usually using lists with little or no contextual information. The implications of Cognitive Linguistics form the basis of an intervention study carried out in German primary schools. This investigates whether lessons enabling learners to elaborate on words and thereby process the vocabulary more deeply lead to better long-term retention of these items. The results of this empirical study are used to evaluate the relevance and benefits of the theoretical implications of vocabulary research for primary school learners of English.

Following on from my post in April for the carnival, I was slightly puzzled by the fact that the articles I referred to managed to compile different lists of words 2-year-olds should know even though the seemed to quote the same source. So I thought I'd share my own list(s). A word of caution: there are no list of words for multilingual children (partly because of the endless language combinations possible). And while bilinguals are not two monolinguals in one on many accounts, it can be a good starting point to find out what monolingual children should say at a given age. Don't forget that if your child only hears English for half of the day, then it is possible s/he may only produce half of those words. The resource I used to make up this list is based on an assessment tool that parents fill in called the MacArthur Bates Communicative Development Inventories. This is mainly aimed at researchers but is easily understandable. The MacArthur Bates inventories produce tables (you can check them online) of the most frequent words understood and produced by children between 16 and 30 months old. While the articles reported that children should say at least 25 words at 2 years old, there is huge variability in children. 25 is most likely a minimum number and children can produce a lot more by this age (up to 8 times more on average). So I have compiled a list of 50 words: the 50 most frequent words produced by (American) English-speaking children at 2 years old. The table below can be read as thus: 'mommy' is the most frequent word produced by 2 year olds (24 months). It is produced by 99% of children this age. 'uh oh' is the fourth most common word (or sound effect) produced by 94% of children. Caution: this is a list for English. Do not try and translate this to any other language as there are cultural and linguistic differences which I will explore in a later post. Source: Dale, P. S., and Fenson, L. (1996). Our favourite Portuguese language resources for little language learners and bilingual children
We struggle with resources in Portuguese in our house. We manage to get a few books a year through family or trips and ordering over the internet from abroad but it is all a rather costly affair. Since LJ is now 5 and more interested in printables, I have been scouring the internet for free or cheap printables to learn Portuguese and help her learn about Portugal too (as most materials are in Brazilian Portuguese). Flash cards These little cards are great. Each card contains a simple word with an illustration. The words represented are abelha, bicicleta, cachorro, dinossauro, elefante, flor, gato, hipopótamo, igreja, jacaré, laranja, macaco, ninho, ovo, polvo, queijo, robô, sapato, trem, uva, violino, xícara, zebra These are in Brazilian Portuguese though and some of the words just don't work for us (trem is comboio in Portugal). Fruits & vegetables colouring pages Two pages filled with fruits and vegetables to color with the names clearly labeled. We love these as they are easy to write/copy too. Portuguese flag While discovering the Portuguese flag last year during the World Cup, we used this page which has a few printables with activities to do around the flag: colouring, jigsaw, bookmarks, etc. Simple but she loved it. Calendar A little calendar with the months and days written clearly and in capitals (important for us right now) in Portuguese. Word searches A few simple word searches.... LJ is only beginning to try attempt these but we are giving them a go. Yes, I know they are in Brazilian Portuguese too... boohooo.... The animal word search is the favourite so far. Check out my Pinterest board for more Portuguese resources too. And if you'd like to suggest some, please, o, please, do go ahead.... I would be eternally grateful.
