I'm still loving Nursery! (My daughter is a little troublemaker sometimes but I still enjoy watching these toddlers learn that Jesus loves them.) I feel the kids get enough silly songs from TV, preschool, etc. so we're going to try and focus on "church-approved" songs to get them ready for Primary. I also thought it would be nice to have a back-up plan in case our music teacher doesn't show up. Life happens and it's always nice to be prepared, right? Nursery Singing Time Ideas Set out Foam Squares (everyone gets the same color so they don’t fight over a color to sit on) Sing “Here We Are Together” (261) to start and help kids learn each other’s names. If it’s someone’s birthday that week sing the “Happy, Happy Birthday” (284a) song. Next is a seasonal song: “Rain is Falling All Around” (271b). Can change it depending on the season - sun is shining, wind is blowing, leaves are falling, snow is falling. “I Love to See the Temple” (95). Hold pictures of temples and/or use hand actions. “Give Said the Little Stream” (236) and have them twirl blue ribbon taped to jumbo craft sticks. “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam” (60) and hold Sunbeam paper plates to their faces. “Popcorn Popping” (242) and use hand actions. “If you’re happy (266). With bells – you can change it to clap your hands, spin around, blink your eyes. “Do as I’m doing” (276) with bells bicycle your hands, sway back and forth, tap the floor & clap “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” (275a) using hand actions “Jesus Said Love Everyone” (61) hold fleece hearts and sing softly “I Hope They Call Me on a Mission” (169) Clip missionary name tags to their clothes with clothespins I made a 4x6 file in photoshop (there are 2 tags on each print) then I printed them at Costco & used packing tape to laminate them. “Follow the Prophet” (110) sing just the chorus and march around the room with Monson’s picture “I Am like a Star” (163) hold star-on-a-stick “I Wiggle” (271) using hand actions “I Am a Child of God” (301) Have them hold a picture of Jesus with the Children Have them turn in their colored floor squares and then blow bubbles till the parents come get them. Here are 4 flashcards you can copy to Word. Be sure to use narrow margins. Then print and cut. That's 16 songs to choose from. :)

We currently meet at 9:00, with two other wards meeting in the same building. This is the schedule we use now, but know we will change it when we move to the 11:00 time slot in January. Nap-time will dictate the differences. 10:15 - 10:30 Gathering activity. Everyone doing the same thing. We found that the stress level was too high and the choices overwhelming when we let them come in and start dragging everything out of the closet. Now with one fun choice when they walk in the door, there is more excitement about staying and less crying when parents leave. Some of the things we have tried are: playdough and cutters small books on the floor things with wheels balloons all over the place to throw and kick at blocks rice tubs with measuring tools 10:30 - 10:45 As their interest wanes with the first activity, they can clean their part up and go to the closet with one of the adults and pick one toy to play with. Once everyone has a toy out, they can trade and share. This usually takes the fifteen minutes. 10:45 - 10:55 We start cleaning up and washing hands for snack. With thirteen of them it takes ten minutes to do this and get them seated at the table. 10:55 - 11:10 Blessing, snack and a scripture. The scripture is a very short one that has something to do with the lesson. I usually take it right out of the first paragraph of the lesson. They don't always understand it, but it's important for them to see the adults holding the scriptures and reading out of them. Snacks we have tried: fresh fruits: strawberries, grapes, watermelon, kiwi, cherries, apples (cut very thin) carrot sticks Veggie Crisps graham crackers goldfish cheese sticks Fruit Loops Cheerios We bought bibs so the strawberries and cherries didn't ruin Sunday clothes, and sippee cups for water. Those are taken home each week and washed. 11:10 - 11:15 clean up and we make a BIG deal about them cleaning up for themselves. They carry their plates or napkins to the garbage and put the cups in a basket. Then they move their little chairs if they are strong enough into a semi-circle for singing time. 11:15-11:25 Singing Time We are very lucky to have an awesome Primary chorister who comes into Nursery to sing with them for ten minutes every Sunday, but you could lead this yourself. Favorite songs: (I'll do another post with lyrics and actions) Wheels On The Bus Three Little Monkeys/Mr Alligator Once There Was A Snowman What Do We Do With Sleeping Children? I Am A Child Of God Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam I Had A Little Turtle Popcorn Popping 11:25-11:40 (This is the hardest part, but important to get them ready for Sunbeams) Lesson and either a flannel board story or a simple craft to emphasize the lesson). This usually involves some product to take home so they can share with their parents what they learned. 11:40 - 11:50 a game of some kind. Baby Basketball Lamb Hunt freeze tag How does a _______ walk? 11:50 - 11:55 Bubbles (What is Nursery without bubbles?) We found several bubble guns, some good and some bad, and we use those and different kinds of wands. While two of us are handling bubbles, the third is getting the things they are taking home organized. 11:55 - 12:10 (no one shows up on time......) we talk about the necklace, bracelet, coloring page, whatever they produced to take home. We make sure we repeat the name of the lesson over and over during this time, ad naseum..... kids remember it and parents hear it when they come in. Nursery is a difficult calling because you are teaching 8-10 mini lessons during a two hour period. I taught Seminary for twelve years and Gospel Doctrine for three, and Nursery is the hardest! But it's also the most fun. Some things we have done to make it easier: One person does the flannel board story One person does the scripture One person is in charge of birthdays We used Avery clear labels to type up several sheets of their names so that we don't have to write it on every paper or project they create; a label goes on it. One person is designated as the person to take a crying child to walk in the hallway. They tend to set each other off. We don't take them back to their parents unless it is absolutely necessary. It takes time for them to feel comfortable with us and one on one is a good way to do that.
One of my callings in my church is to the Nursery. When I first got called it was a hot mess, but at the start of the year we descided to do an total overhaul. I made this music time bag that has proven to be highly success with my once roudy kids. I have a bag filled with fun items that stand for different songs and each child takes turns picking an item out of the bag. It took them just 2 weeks to get the hang of our new music time. Now they are so excited to do music time. Best of all it's a great tool to keep them revrent and to sing nice and loud. They know if they do that they get to pick next and they love to pick a item out of the bag. Here are the different items I've have chosen. Wheels on the Bus: I have a flip book, the kids love flipping the pages and doing all the hand jestures. Itsy Bitsy Spider: I have this Itsy Bitsy Spider book. Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed: I made this monkey glove. The kids love putting it on as we sing. Monkeys Swinging in a Tree: I have a monkey and crocodile. Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam: I made these sunbeam sticks out of felt and popsical sticks. I hand them out when we sing and the loves waving them in the air as we sing. Once There Was a Snowman: I found this cute little snowman. Soon I hope I get to replace him when the snow finally stops. I Love to See the Temple: I made these fun "Magic Wands" that I hand out while we sing. The kids love waving the ribbons in the air. Like I said this bag has worked some miracles in my nursery. My kids sing more, take turns and stay reverent during singing time.

Nursery worker—it can be a very challenging calling in the Church. But it can also be one of the most fulfilling. You don’t have to be the children’s babysitter; instead you can be a loving teacher who helps them learn gospel principles in doses that their short attention spans can handle. Here are a few different ways to make your Nursery into more than just a room filled with scattered toys and toddlers with cookie crumbs in their hair. It may take some extra thought and preparation, but the benefits will far outweigh the costs.

For teaching the Father's day song, I made these shirts by folding a piece of 8.5 x 11 paper and the ties out of construction paper. Click here to find the directions. On the back of each shirt was written a phrase of the song. The shirts were taped on the walls/chairs/piano/podium all around the room. I called on a child to choose a shirt (we went in the order of the rainbow) and read the line of the song. I had the visual aids for the song up on the board, all mixed up. Then another child would take a fly swatter and swat the picture that matched that line of the song. After we matched the words and the picture, we sang that line. We went through all the shirts in the same manner until we had all the pictures put in order and had sung the song through!
All You Need For Your Primary's Nursery: Nursery Resources and Printables, What an important part of Primary, Nursery is!! I think it is important to review the purpose of nursery: "The purpose of the nursery class is to help children learn the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and live it. The nursery class should help the children increase their understanding of and love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, have positive experiences in a Church setting, and grow in feelings of self-worth." -Behold Your Little Ones: Nursery Manual (2008), 1–6 It's not a babysitting service, nor is it just play and treat time. But is is a class, a class that helps these 18 month old to 3 year old children learn and understand the love that their Heavenly Father and Savior has for them, through learning about His restored gospel. These children are fully capable and eager to learn these truths! It's a great idea at the first of the year and as new nursery children are added into nursery that you give the parents a parent letter. The letter can be found here: Letter to Parents Along with the letter I also like to give the parents a little questionnaire to fill out and turn back into the nursery leaders and a letter that explains the purpose and schedule to nursery. Click the Free Download below for these printables. Nursery is now only fifty minutes long! Nursery should include the following in its schedule: Lesson Time, Play Time, Snack Time and Music Time. There is learning that can be accomplished in all four of these areas. To find out more, please read the introduction in the nursery manual. You will be able to determine the order and time spent in each one of these areas. Lesson Time: My mom recently served as a nursery leader and wanted the nursery children to try to have their lessons correlate with the new, Come, Follow Me lessons. So she went through and made a schedule, doing the best she could. Some just don't really match up. She was so kind to let me share these with you. Play Time: Some fun ideas for play time could include, puzzle play, reading books, play dough, felt boards, puppets, etc. At the end of play, encourage children to clean up. You could use the song, " Fun to Do". But use the words, Cleaning up toys is fun to do Fun to do, to do, to do! Cleaning up toys is fun to do, To do, to do, to do! Snack Time: I've served in primary A LOT, so I've seen a lot of different things done in nursery for snack time. I have seen paper towels or coffee filters be used to place snacks on. I have seen little bathroom cups used for drinks, or sippy cups that are taken home each week by the leaders and washed. Make sure you only pour small amounts of water in the cups at a time, to prevent large spills. As for snacks, be sensitive to any food allergies or concerns from parents. Snacks for nursery should come out of the primary budget. Some ideas of snacks could be, little goldfish crackers, pretzels, cheese (place in a little cooler for the day), sliced bananas, fruit snacks, etc. Music Time: There are so many great songs in the Children's Songbook! The music can help reinforce what was learned in the lesson. It can be songs that can help the children stretch and get their wiggles out. It can be split up. Do music before the lesson to get the children prepared for the lesson. Do music after the lesson, do music as you clean up, etc. You could also have music playing as the arrive in nursery. Teach the primary children the words as you sing it with them and teach them actions to some of the songs. A fun song to sing with the primary children is "A Happy Family". Here are some printables you could print on card stock, cut out and paste on craft sticks to help them sing this song. We made a "Sunday Sack", and it held these "Sunday sticks": Brown lunch sacks work well. Another ver...
So I have been looking for a nice, quiet, Father's Day singing time and naturally turned to my usual resource - The Friend magazine. I browsed through several past June issues and ran into a Funstuff quiz activity called “Scripture Fathers.” (June, 2004) The point of the activity is to identify the scripture father from the clue (and a scripture reference, if necessary.) The tie illustration gave me the idea of putting the clues on the back of paper ties for singing time on Father’s Day. I was going to cut the ties from scrapbook paper, but then I remembered seeing a pdf for these ties on Bridgette’s blog a couple of years ago. BTW, we are not going to do the "boppin" part, just because I'm not as outgoing or courageous as Bridgette. ;o} So, I just printed out the ties, copied the clues text from the magazine, and cut and pasted the clues on the back of the ties. Now I need to choose some appropriate review songs. And maybe study just a little about how these fathers made good choices so that I can tie this activity to the monthly theme. Then I’ll be set for Sunday. I hope you all have a fun Father's Day!
Nursery Singing Time can be so much fun! Using a few simple props makes singing time a blast with the littlest members of the ward. It will take a few weeks to help the kids learn the expectations (handing back the props) but they catch on so quickly.
Singing time yoga also known as position cards, singing time review activity providing tons of movement as you sing Primary songs.
Gah! I got the musical MEASLES!!!!!! This one is SOOOO fun, keeps the kids’ attention and keeps them singing well! Win, win, win. Tell the kids that singing can be contagious (songs can spread joy, peace, and feel the Spirit) just like the Measles!!!! Pass out red stickers to all teachers. Pick a song to sing. After the song, each teacher pick 2 kids from their class to get a stickers. Aaand the stickers get stuck on YOU (or the Pianist!) It’s so fun to see how many stickers “measles” you end up with at the end! Have fun with this one, but make sure to tell them, they only get a sticker if they’re singing their best!
I am the music leader for the primary (children's group) at our church. That means every Sunday you will find me doing all kinds of crazy things to help the children learn the gospel through music. A few months ago, my primary president asked if I could also go into the nursery (children 18 mos to 3 years) and teach them as well. I was more than willing as my daughter is in that class and I know how much she loves music. I will admit that I was apprehensive because is seemed a bit overwhelming to add that to my already busy schedule. So of course I turned to the internet for help. I took most of my ideas from here and here then modified them for my situation. Here's what I do.... I decided that the best way for the children to lean the music and to keep the work load down for myself would be to sing the same songs every week. Children this age really thrive on routine. In addition, it takes several repetitions of the same song before they will even begin to join in. So I made up a schedule and I stick to it every week. The hardest part was gathering all the supplies, but once I had them all together everything became easy peasy. (note: cs = Children's Songbook) First, I keep all my supplies in a tote in the primary room so they are ready to go when it's time When I enter the nursery room the children are always so excited to see me. They are so cute! No one else greets me as enthusiastically as they do. In order to encourage the children to stay in place near me, I spread a blanket on the floor for them to sit on. They love to help me spread it out. 1. Hello Friends, cs 254a (actions) We always start with this song. We sit in a circle (I kneel on the floor as well), hold hands and shake hands as we sing. 2. Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, cs 275a (actions) 3. I Love To See the Temple, cs 95 (pictures) I cut pictures from the Temples magazine and glued them onto card stock for stability and to hide the other side. Then I slipped them into plastic page protectors. I give each child a picture to hold and look at while we (I) sing the first verse of the song. I had to tape the tops closed or the children would take the pictures out of the protectors. :) 4. Smiles, cs 267a (actions, pictures) I cut out and laminated these faces then taped them on opposite sides of a large craft stick. I show the face that matches the words and encourage the children to smile and frown along. You can find the faces in the Primary 3 visual aids or here. 5. If You're Happy, cs 266 (actions, bells) I made these bell bracelets with craft supplies I had on hand: some stretchy silver cord and small jingle bells. You could also use ribbon, string, or pipe cleaners or glue the bells onto craft sticks. No substitute for the bells (at least not that I can think of!) We sing one verse clapping our hands then another verse waving bye-bye with both hands to really hear the bells. They love it! 6. Once There Was a Snowman, cs 249 (pompom, actions) OR Popcorn Popping, cs 242 (actions) OR Rain is Falling All Around, cs 241b (actions) We only do one of these songs, depending on the season or the weather; Snowman in winter, Popcorn in spring, and Rain all the other times substituting the current weather for rain. For Snowman I have small white pompom "snowballs" for them to hold. I usually ask them questions about the weather to introduce Rain is Falling. Example: Me: "Is it snowing outside?" Them: Nooo. Me: "Is it sunny outside?" Them: Nooo. Me: "Is it raining outside?" Them: Yes! Then we do actions suggested by the lyrics. I think once the leaves start falling, we'll use 'leaves' in place of 'rain'. 7. Primary Song of the Month (flipchart) This is actually something new I'm thinking about adding. The plan is to bring in my flipcharts I use in primary and sing them part of the song the rest of the primary is learning that month. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know how it will go, but it think it would help them to be at least a little familiar with the songs (as much as they can tolerate). 8. Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam, cs 60 (streamers) The children each get two streamers to wave while we sing. Of course, we have to throw our arms in the air on "sun-BEAM". Here's the tutorial on making the streamers that I posted to another blog. 9. The Wise Man and the Foolish Man, cs 281 (actions) 10. Do As I'm Doing, cs 276 (shakers) Each child gets two eggs to shake while we sing. This is their favorite prop; they look forward to it the whole singing time. They're just Easter eggs that I filled with a half tablespoon of rice (the least amount I could and still have them sound good) then glued shut with a hot glue gun. BTW, the open egg is one that one of the children broke open last Sunday. That's why I put in the smallest amount of rice I could. Hopefully the rest of the children won't follow his example this Sunday. I'd hate to not be able to use these anymore! 11. I Am a Child of God, cs 2 (mirror) I like to end on a reverent note and this is my favorite primary song of all time. I used puff paints to decorate the mirror. The children fold their arms while I hold the mirror and move it around so they each get a chance to look in it. Here's a closer look at the mirror: The kids are so funny: they love to make faces at themselves: After we're done singing I give each child a sticker, then they help me shake out and fold up the blanket. Finally, they all yell 'bye-bye' as I leave. They're the best. :) There you have it. I hope you can use some of my ideas in your nursery. And please share your ideas as well! Happy Singing
