Those Amazing Plakatstil Posters! Hans Rudi Erdt When we look at retro posters there can be no more of an amazing story than what happened to a 15 year old in 1898 Berlin Germany. His name was Lucian Bernhard and after attending an exhibition of interior decoration he was amazed by the lavish colors he had experienced throughout the show. Dumbstruck with enthusiasm for these avant-garde colors, Lucian decided to paint his father’s home interiors in the bright paints he was so moved by. His father, retuning from a three-day trip was shocked at what Lucien had done. Not amused, his father named his son a criminal causing young Lucian to flee his home. Trying desperately to support himself on his own, this self-taught young artist eventually decided to enter a poster contest for Priester matches in 1905. The original poster design was an ashtray with lighted cigar and a box of matches on a tablecloth. Lucian eventually felt the image was too bare and he painted dancing girls in the background rising out of the smoke. Further examination later that day, he decided that the image was too complicated so he painted the girls out. Even later that evening a friend dropped by and asked if it was a poster for a cigar. That motivated Bernhard to paint out the cigar. The young artist also decided that the tablecloth and ashtray stood out to prominently and painted those out as well. What was left? Just matches a on bare table. With time running out on the contest deadline Bernard quickly painted the word Priester above the matches in blue and got the poster off to the competition that needed to be postmarked by midnight. The poster and advertising in general was about to have a ground breaking change. The story gets even more amazing! It was eventually leaked out that all of the entries were first thrown in the trash and completely rejected by all the jurors. If one of the group had not arrived late the history of poster design would have been quite different. Ernst Growald of the Hollerbaum and Schmidt lithography firm convinced the jurors that one of the designs in the trash was worthy of reconsideration. Holding up Bernhard’s poster Growald lectured the group, “This is my first prize. Here is a genius!” The design went on to become the famous Priester matches poster which was a formula that would be repeated many times over. A simple, direct reduction of shapes and a word. A design approach that is still used with the advantage of running as tiny as a postage stamp and as large as a billboard. This design school of flat shapes and simple color became known as the Plakatstil (poster style) of Germany in the early twentieth century. Bernhard used this approach in next two decades of his career. He designed over 300 packages for the firm and influenced five other graphic designers to come on board with them. What followed was an amazing array of product logo posters that eventually made its way to America in 1923. Oddly enough, it was five years before he received any poster commissions. No doubt German poster art would eventually play a significant role in the language of American advertising.
Often characterized by a seething loathing of social decor, patriotism, and ego, and fed by years spent suffering from tuberculosis and a gathering madness that would eventually force him to spend two years in a sanatorium, Bernhard's work is some of...
"Table IV (Muscle Man)," Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani (1747), by Bernhard Siegfried Albinus and Jan Wandelaar DIMENSIONS • 9" x 12" (Image: 7.5" x 10.13") • 12" x 16" (Image: 10" x 13.5") • 16" x 20" (Image: 12.56" x 17") • 20" x 24" (Image: 14.81" x 20") • 24" x 30" (Image: 18.5" x 25") Archival Inkjet on Fine Art Paper Smooth Surface - Matte Finish - Inset Borders ABOUT THE ARTWORK ----------------------------- Bernhard Siegfried Albinus published "Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corpis humani" (1747) in an effort to improve the scientific accuracy of anatomical illustrations. Arguably the most important medical atlas of the 18th century, it contained a total of 40 copperplate engravings, including three of full human skeletons and nine of écorché figures illustrating successively higher orders of musculature. Albinus's partner in the project was the artist-engraver Jan Wandelaar, a gifted draftsman with prior experience as a scientific illustrator. Together they developed a drawing technique wherein nets of square webbing were placed between the artist and the specimen, allowing the image to be copied by reference to a grid. Albinus vetted each figure for objectivity, symmetry and vitality, ordering Wandelaar to redo illustrations until they met his standards of perfection. In total, the project required 20 years to complete; 13 to produce the artwork, and a further 7 or 8 to engrave. In order to enhance the illusion of three-dimensionality, Wandelaar was given permission to place his figures in naturalistic settings. Two such plates feature Clara, the first living rhinoceros calf brought to Europe, whose celebrity assisted in the marketing of the book. While these artistic flourishes met with some controversy in their time, they are much appreciated in our own. ART-CENTRIC DESIGN ----------------------------- Vintage art is not standardized. The original works are usually too long, or too short, to neatly fill a store-bought frame. Most shops arbitrarily crop the artwork to match, leading to claustrophobic prints with missing or partial elements. These modifications — sometimes trivial, sometimes ludicrous — are not always shown in the product photos. We believe that the purpose of art is not to fill a frame; it is the purpose of a frame to showcase the art. Our prints have inset borders that make up any differences in proportion between the artwork and a standard frame, so that you can experience the art as the artist intended. They look sharp in beveled mats, may be float mounted, or inserted directly into standard frames; the borders providing a mat-like accent around the image. There are many styles from which to choose. Framing is a fun, creative process that enhances the artwork and livens your space for years to come. Should you like any advice, feel free to reach out. CUSTOMIZATION AND IMAGE REQUESTS ----------------------------- We are happy to customize our prints to fit your frame. Borderless prints may require the artwork to be cropped to fit a new aspect ratio. In such cases, we will provide a mockup to ensure that the final product meets with your approval. If you’re looking for an artwork that is not in our catalog, feel free to ask if we can provide it. We will print any public domain or openly licensed image that is available in high resolution. MUSEUM QUALITY ----------------------------- Giclée process prints are the gold standard in fine art reproduction. We use a matte finish, cotton fiber paper to maximize detail while eliminating glare. Our prints display a wide color gamut, deep blacks and beautiful tonal transitions. Produced using only archival materials, they will not fade or yellow, but maintain their original quality for as long as you own them. HANDMADE DECLARATION ----------------------------- To assure artistic quality, all of our production and design is strictly in-house. Every print has been proofed, calibrated and inspected for defects. We do not drop ship, resell or make use of third-party production partners. SHIPPING AND PACKAGING ----------------------------- All orders ship within one business day via USPS First Class, Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express. A traditional pull-down wall chart by Jung Koch Quentell illustrating the armed tapeworm, Taenia solium. Used as teaching material in German schools. colorful print on paper reinforced with canvas. Published by Hagemann, Dusseldorf. Fantastic wall decoration item for the loft style room. Measurements: Width 82 cm (32.28 inch) Height 112,50 cm (44.29 inch) The measurements shown refer just to the canvas and do not include the poles. Background information on the history of school wall charts: The idea to upgrade every day school life by using pictures was supported in the late 18th century by Johann Bernhard Basedow. In 1774 he published a four-volume book "Elementarwerk" which combined pictures, text and information with merely hundred copperplates. Modern printing methods enabled the spread from rich private schools to rural grade schools. From 1820-1836 the oldest mentioned series of wall charts were published with the range of six booklets including 63 large sized charts. The rising 20th century was the golden age for publishers printing wall charts. Artists Masterly performed pictures which combined the subject-specific standards of a scientist with the standards given by an educator and finally created a magnificent art work.
