MAKE AN OFFER on this lovely antique kiln-fired enamel jewelry box. It was most likely first sold around the 1870s in the Paris shop of Alphonse Tahan. Tahan was the official cabinetmaker to Emperor Napoléon III, and was among the most famous craftsmen in Paris. His work, typical of the Second Empire, combined the formality of the late 1700s with the lavish use of costly materials. He also created mostly smaller pieces such as fine jewelry caskets and sewing boxes. Among these, his company became well known for gilt bronze boxes with beautiful hand enameled lids and sides. Some of these boxes were signed, but many were not. This box is not signed, but it displays the high quality enamel work for which Tahan caskets were known. The enamel work itself, was created by the enamel craftsmen of Sevres and Bresse, towns well known for their hand painted porcelain industries. It is the labor intensive and highly specialized enamel work that makes this type of casket so unique and desirable. For each color, the enamelist paints the convex copper plates with an enamel powder suspended in liquid and then fires it in the kiln. Layer after layer is applied between multiple firings resulting in a fine porcelain-like finish. Finally, enamel "dots" are applied to create the jeweled appearance of the finished product. This box in very good to excellent condition given its age of about 150 years. The vibrant Celeste Blue base enamel has no apparent defects, except on very close inspection. There is a tiny chip in the left front edge of the lid where it meets the ormolu frame. There is an even smaller enamel loss mostly under the bronze mount near the left rear part of the lid. It is barely visible. There is also a slight depression in the bronze frame just above the catch to open and close the lid. The hinge and clasp are in good shape and function well. The gilt finish on the bronze mount is in exceptionally good condition for its age. I note only one small area that is slightly darkened. The box and its frame are supported on ornate acanthus scroll feet, all in excellent condition. The interior of the box is covered in dark red velvet, and the bottom of the box is covered with a red panel that looks like Moroccan leather. Both are in very good condition. The workmanship of the enamel decoration is superb. The tiny dots of white enamel shine like pearls; and the green and red dots have an iridescence that makes them shine like jewels. There are none missing. The gilding and black enamel detailing is well executed and in excellent condition. The box measures 5 by 3 inches, and 3 inches tall, which is a relatively large size for these enameled boxes. Your enamel box will arrive, securely packaged and insured.
