Hello! Today I'm popping in to share with you this whale themed birthday party for my mother-in-law. To be honest with you, I wasn't sure if a whale theme would 'sink or swim' with our family, but everyone loved it, especially the grand kids! (Note: This post contains affiliate links to help you locate products.) The table was lined with blue striped wrapping paper, blue tulle and blue vases filled with white flowers. For some reason, I'm really into tulle lately. (...you know that netting stuff that tutus are made of? It's perfect for parties and bow making.) Better add that craft item to my favorite things list: ribbon, washi tape, chalkboard, tulle... Name rocks are from this post. And of course, I used every whale pun I could come up with! Yes, this post is 'drowning' with whale puns...some are better than others. This cute little chalkboard easel is from Michaels. A friend gifted me these precious Whale Wooden Ornaments- click here. They looked adorable hanging from the glass vases placed down the center of the table. I actually found the turquoise glass vases at a garage sale, but these vintage vases online are extra fabulous! This was a family dinner, so of course the menu had to coordinate with the theme. (You know me so well.) -Fish-n-Chips including sweet potatoes 'chips'. -Cedar planked salmon Have you ever grilled salmon on cedar planks? If not, YOU are missing out! Oh wow! The salad was appropriately named Seaweed. Naturally, most of the grandkids stayed far away from it. But, the veggie tray got some attention. Look! You can spot, (not a sea cucumber), but an orca whale surfacing right in the middle of the vegetables! Oh yah! The vegetables were appropriately named as well. And the showstopper? The fabulous watermelon fruit whale! My sister-in-law (who has never attended one of my parties, because she lives so far away) was in town from Virginia, and offered to help me prepare food. Oh, was she in for a surprise when I gave her this job. Needless to say, nothing phases her and she totally rocked this watermelon whale 'right out of the sea'! We served fruit out of it for a week, because it was so cute. ...and don't forget about refreshments. Sea Water...I mean fresh water, was the drink of choice. You been waiting to see the dessert table, right? Here you go! I hung my handmade paper Happy Birthday banner with a wood planked whale to set the stage. I found the whale at Home Goods, but I love this online Wooden Whale Wall Hanging, too! Of course I had to paint the whale to match the party colors...everyone does this, right? Treats included: Whale blubber- blue jello with gummies Blowholes- dried apples Bottlenoses- blue drinks in a bottle Chocolate Plankton- M&M's Whale food- Goldfish crackers (Finding Dory version) Whale bubbles- large white gumballs Sweet Whales- sugar cookie cut outs and a whale cake! My sister-in-law and I crafted up this sweet and tasty thing. It's a triple layer white cake with blackberry filling and buttercream frosting. The whale on top is make out of fondant and lots of blue dye. (...be sure to wear plastic gloves if you attempt this.) I almost don't want to show you this picture... (The forks were labeled, harpoons...in a clever way, not a mean way.) Save the whales! Those cute little glass jars with metal whale tags were found at Michaels. We used the whale and banner wall as a photo shoot backdrop...(just carefully pull the table out.) And there you have it. Happy Birthday, Nana! Click here to print your own whale signs. First, for all my American readers today is the day. GO AND GET YOUR VOTE ON. Avengers Assemble. Totally. Assemble they did. Birthday party it up they did. This was a fun, if not slightly stressful party to throw. I had ideas about what I wanted to do right away. Middle totally approved and was only too helpful to come up with more ideas. Party ideas, check. Party colors picked, check. Now, like the Avengers, I just had to assemble. Whew! Everything got done, and Captain America had a successful birthday party. Here is a little run down of our Supertastic Avengers Birthday Party. The main table was decorated with Marvel Avenger comic fabric. I made a simple banner from paint cards. I chose the colors I wanted. Then I simply ran them through my machine and sewed them together. I chose to buy gumballs and Sixletes in the main party colors: green, blue, red, and gray. One of my favorite things is the cardboard box buildings in the background. I made the ones on the table and several more for one of the party games...which I will talk about in just a sec... The cardboard boxes were gathered over weeks and just stored happily in my garage. I bought a low-end cheap house paint from The Mart in a stone gray color. I covered the boxes with a couple of coats. I also cut out windows in yellow and black paper. Then with the help of little hands, I taped on all of the windows. Besides the store bought candy, I also made Rice Crispie Treat Pops. One of the highlights of the party were these Avenger felt masks. I got the idea for these masks HERE. I didn't follow her template, I just kind of winged it. For me that worked out just peachy. I did have to stare at the picture of the Thor mask quite a bit. I am surprised I didn't go blind. The potential loss of eye sight was totally worth it, because the boys loved the masks. These Thor Pez dispensers were also quite a hit. Besides the main treat table, there was another treat station. I brought up the red dresser from my boys' room. I continued with the color theme, of course. I pretty much have a problem! I displayed the comic book letters. I opted out of doing a cake. In years past I have gone nuts making big old creative cakes. However, we always have way to much cake left over. So I made a simple vanilla flavored cupcake, frosted it with a light and fluffy buttercream frosting, and topped it with Sixlets. Easy peasy and totally cute. I decorated the room we played all our games in with hand painted posters totally copied from these postcard prints I LOVED. The party games were rowdy and fun. The boys flew around our cardboard buildings in a timed obstacle course like Iron Man. They also armed themselves with their cardboard Captain America shield and protected themselves from the enemy. Next was the Thor hammer toss. They each got their own hammer thanks to toilet paper tubes, small boxes, and lots and lots of duct tape. They really enjoyed throwing their hammer (one at a time of course) at a running Loki (Hubby). BUT, the best game... The game that they all loved...The game that caused the most rowdiness...The game that they had a hard time coming down from... ...well that was the game that involved our cardboard buildings, some green gloves, and a little bit of unbridled anger... HULK smash. Nothing like embracing your inner HULK. I will share a little bit more about the favorite party game tomorrow. We certainly had an Avenger-tastic afternoon. The best part of the party was the birthday boy's smile. That is all I needed for this party to be a success.

Who, Who, Who, Who, Who! We had a puppy themed party over here. We had a pretty good time and there was tons of puppy fun. I was really happy with the results of the party...I am, however, NOT happy with the photo results. I was not able to get a good tablescape shot, which means no picture of how everything tied together..wah.There is not one really great shot of my little party man...wah, wah. The photographic evidence I do have of the party is not of the greatest quality...wah, wah, wah. Can you tell I was a little more than bummed? Is that not just the silliest thing ever? Yes, it sure is. Little Man had fun and I KNOW that is the most important part. Thanks for indulging my whine fest. On to our Puppy Party- The ONLY good (I use that word mildly) photos of our sweet boy. The best part of the whole night. He actually ate his "dog food" cake like a puppy. Not because he knows that is how puppies eat, but because it was so big and he couldn't figure out how to eat it. Then we all laughed, then he kept doing it. LOVE it!! made this little tag on picnik.com with help from this little how-to Tutorial on his birthday shirt tomorrow. I threw a very fancy 3rd birthday party for our daughter, Adeline . . . inspired by one of her favorite books – Fancy Nancy. I maybe got a bit carried away with the idea of tulle and glitter, but this party turned out to be sooo much fun for everyone involved. My little girl is still talking about it! DECOR A lot of red, pink & purple. I bought tulle from Joann’s and draped it from the ceiling and window (we haven’t got around to decorating our living/dining room yet (the bottom of the list) but it works out great for hosting a party). I also bought some cheap red and pink fabric to use as tablecloths for the kids table and dessert table. On the dessert table I created a feather boa backdrop (after being inspired by this picture) and Adeline and I made the glitter letters to string across the top. My mom came over last minute and “whipped” up the adorable tulle skirts around the (Ikea) kid stools with some of the pink tulle. I found butterfly wings at the dollar store and also hung them on the window. For centerpieces I used some old faux grass plants I had lying around the house and added a few purple butterflies. For the front door I made a wreath by wrapping a straw wreath in pink ribbon and attaching a sign. I made all the party printables (banner, food labels, favor tags, party signs) And to top it off – gold, pink, red and purple balloons all over. MENU I set up a little buffet for the girls (and moms) on a separate table in the kitchen. This included a mini milk bar with chocolate and strawberry milk, pink lemonade, mini cucumber sandwiches, butterfly shaped PB & J, individual servings of mac & cheese and individual servings of veggie sticks with ranch dip (I found the individual serving ideas on pinterest – awesome). On the dessert table we had a delicious ruffle cake, cupcakes topped with fondant butterflies, frosted marshmallow sticks and a mini candy bar complete with purple and pink rock crystal, gumballs, taffy and candy sticks . . . very fancy! ACTIVITIES Our guests of honor were all girls between 1 1/2 – 4 years of age, so entertainment was simple but fancy! Upon arrival the girls were seated at the table with a personal glitter tiara and cardboard butterfly wings to decorate. I had little buckets of crayons, jewels and foam stickers for them to use. After they were done decorating their crowns and wings they were escorted to an “accessories” table covered with a blanket. Upon reveal they were faced with a variety of necklaces, bracelets, rings, sunglasses and fancy ribbon wands (check out the tutorial for these here). All of the girls already came dressed up in their fanciest ensembles (priceless) so you can imagine how adorable this all was. After accessorizing the girls practiced their “fancy” moves and fluttered around the house in their wings, dresses and fancy accessories . . . ohh la la! After lunch we topped it all off with some “pin the jewel on the tiara” before everyone got distracted in the playroom. What an extravagantly fancy day it was! Our little birthday girl couldn’t stop dancing around or smiling. www.simplypchee.com
