Lots of craziness and excitment this week! We started our end of the year Ocean Animals unit, and I have been having so much fun! Hopefully the kids have been, too (oh, and learning some things as well, haha!)! We started the week off by learning about the five oceans--I feel old since I was only taught about four main oceans, you know, way back when there were nine planets...Anyways, I found this song on Proteacher last year and fancied it up a bit for our song book...I do not know the song's author, so please let me know if you do! Click the picture to download it for free! We also did a lesson on the ocean's zones and made a fun foldable to hold facts about each layer. The kids were totally into all of those creepy creatures down in the twilight and midnight zones! The original idea for this flipbook came from this site. I tweaked it a little for my kiddos, and have included directions and a printable for you below if you'd like to add this to your Ocean file (or should I say, binder?). Click the pic below for the freebie! Next week, we are going to become marine biologists to prepare for our Ocean Animals Museum. I am so pumped! My team is doing a grade level Museum Day, with each class studying a different animal group. It is so much fun to watch all of our little firsties give their speeches and show off their published "All About" books, models, and posters. If you think your class would like to become wildlife biologists too, please check out my newest unit. It is common core aligned for grades K-2 (standards included) and it can be used to study any animal! Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more Ocean fun and freebies in the next few weeks! And, if you have any great Oceans activities you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them!

Happy Friday! Er, Monday? Well, originally I was going to post this on Friday but I had no time (big surprise, right?) so here it is on Monday! Here's a peek at our fun Families unit from last week, with a few freebies for my bloggy family! :) Art: George Washington Color by Number Many thanks to Maria at Kinder-Craze for this great freebie! On Tuesday we learned a little bit about what a President does and why we celebrate President's Day. Pick up Maria's great freebie at her blog by clicking here. Paper Bag Houses Love how these houses turned out! Family Trees Some of my kiddos were even able to write most of the names on their family tree! Magazine Family Hunt Are you ready for your first freebie? Click on the picture to grab your own copy of this fun family magazine picture hunt! The kiddos cut out pictures of people in magazines and placed them in the category they thought fit: mommies/daddies, grandmas/grandpas, brothers/sisters, and pets. Literacy: Families Have/Can/Are Anchor Chart (Shared Writing) Each day this week we added to our anchor chart for shared writing as we learned more about families. I am so amazed by how much better their letter formation is getting! I Love My Family Because... Class Book This book we made together was so sweet! And it was AMAZING how much I learned/re-affirmed my ideas about my kiddos' love languages. If you have never read The Five Love Languages for Children by Gary Chapman (I also highly recommend the adult version), you should do so! No, it's not the cornerstone of my classroom management like Conscious Discipline, Positive Discipline and Love/Logic, but it is good to open your eyes to different ways to reinforce children and show you love them (aka make deposits to their account!) Take a look below for great clues on different way my kiddos' feel loved! Gifts: Physical Affection: Quality Time/Acts of Service: What's the Rhyme? Sorting Houses This great game is from Lakeshore! It was great to get the kids up and moving while we've been cooped inside for so many days. They picked up a card from the pile and walked around the table trying to find which rhyming house the word went to. (After about two minutes I realized I needed to cover up the list of rhyming words on the back... thank goodness for sticky notes!) This game has got me feeling totally inspired for some sort of rhyming Easter basket/egg sort, so be prepared! Working on that idea AND finishing up my St. Patrick's Day Sensory table freebie, so expect to see them in the next two weeks! :) Dramatic Play: Kitchen & Babies This week it was back in the kitchen while we learned about families and homes! I also grabbed these baby bottles at Dollar Tree. We talked about how families take care of each other, and then I saw them acting out these skills in their dramatic play. (Except for one boy that kept carrying his baby around by its' ankle... yikes!) Here's a look at the great books we read/had available at Listening Center and Library this week. And let me just say that my kiddos LOVE Robert Munsch. Alligator Baby and Love You Forever were the definite favorites this week, and you can also download the mp3's for free at Bob's website by clicking here. Just click on the book you want, then click listen, and right click on the "Download File" button. Easy peasy! Amazon.com Widgets And yes, most of these books have animal families (but there's a reason for it... next week is Animal Homes!) If you're wondering where math/science is, I have a confession... there aren't any pictures because we didn't do that block this week! I have come to the realization that I am not superteacher. I cannot finish 13 page progress reports for my class, make a summer field trip calendar, prepare to present for a staff training, and prepare for an upcoming corporate visit on top of daily teacher dealios with no planning time and no school breaks. (Trust me, I tried. It made me very sleep-deprived and grumpy with my kids, so it wasn't worth it). SO I let my kiddos have a bit of a "breather" last week (which worked out well since we also had inside recess almost the entire week) and I made some headway. :) Are you ready for your last freebie? I posted this on the blog on Friday but in case if you missed it... Lucky Lacing Cards! My kiddos loved the Christmas and Valentine's Day cookie cards from Karen at PreKinders, so I thought I'd make my own for St. Patty's (and Easter, those will be upcoming!) Click on the picture to grab yours! Aaaaand don't forget to check out everyone else on this lovely Manic Monday! :) Till later my friends! Can't wait to catch up on all our upcoming fun Dr. Seuss celebrations!

Well, in my 14 years at Zamo we never had rain to contend with during our Celebration of Art festivities... until last night, that is. I must say, that although unusual for San Diego in July, the rain did not dampen the spirit of the event at all:) Attendance was robust and their were tons of smiles to brighten any gloom that drops from the sky may have brought. Again, our incredible classroom teachers and staff were amazing while leading 10 different activities for our community to participate in. Our PTF rocked ticket and food sales. Our administration hung tough in the wet silent auction area. We were visited by our School Board President, the San Diego County VAPA Coordinator, and this morning our SDUSD Superintendent stopped by too. I am so proud of what our kids accomplish every year. It's so great to be able to share the creative work of our students with our school community and VAPA decision makers at the district level and beyond. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand in making the event another great evening of art making and art appreciation! We couldn't do it without you. our school musicians kicking off the evening. rain! My daughter has one of the best kindergarten teachers imaginable. She is caring, patient, and so imaginative. Her activities seem to seamlessly flow together, integrating all content areas. In short, she is amazing! One of the activities, that I really loved, was her newest addition to the blocks center. My daughter came home and told me that their "Blocks Center is really rocking the house!" That is high praise coming from my baby. A few days later, I got to go in and see this "rocking" center for myself. It really is amazing. It's so amazing that I decided to put my own spin on it and share it with you! The center has pieces of felt (or foam) for different symbols on a map. All the pieces are hand cut and are just a quick shape in different colors. The center that I made includes: rivers, lakes, roads, houses, bushes, and trees. You can get a free copy of the map key here. Print out the key and cut out felt, then you have all you need to make "Interactive Maps"! Cut out some pictures from a magazine and label them for specific places in the community. Simple and fun! The part I love the most about this activity is that it can include math, writing, science, social studies, and so much more! I wanted to include specific places in my version, so I went through my clip art and whipped up a few. I love how every map will be different and each child's personality can shine through. When I started making our version at home, there were only straight roads. This created a lot of protesting from my kids. Thus, a variety of roads were created. They were right, it does make the maps more interesting and realistic. As we played with the concept, I added task cards. This will allow kids to create maps with a model. It is really great for kids that have a difficult time starting an activity without direction. Sometimes, open ended play seems to overwhelm these children. Adding task cards with directions, allows these children to work from a task. AND task cards give kids practice reading numerals and using one-to-one correspondence. I also made blank task cards, so that partners could create tasks for each other. It's more fun to do a friend's activity, than one provided by the teacher. Why not capitalize on their enthusiasm for "being the teacher"? Adding onto the idea of "being the teacher", I love adding in partner games. Each child can have a turn I love adding a recording sheet to the activity, because it holds each child accountable for their learning and provides a physical record that is sent home to their parents. One thing I so appreciate about my daughter's teacher is that every center has some written or physical component that comes home. I am able to infer from the directions, or completed project, what my daughter is doing that day. I am able to ask her more specific questions about her day, after looking over the work that comes home. It allows me to get more meaningful information about my daughter's learning that day. I love having different recording sheets for the same activity. It can change the whole focus of the activity and it makes it very easy to differentiate. I hope you found some easy ideas to use with your kids. I love that you can just add felt and open up a whole new world... Get your kids excited about maps and the parts of their community with these hands on activities. Make your own, or find mine here. Head over to my blog, Differentiation Station Creations, to find some more activities to add your Blocks Center! Until next time,
