Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. With the upcoming elections barreling upon us in just a few months, I was delighted to be given the opportunity to review U.S. Elections Lap-Pak, a lapbook unit study designed by Home School in the Woods. Learning how our county's government works and how it's citizens play a huge role in who fills elected positions is very important for all citizens. However, elections can be rather confusing. Many people do not understand that our vote isn't exactly for the candidate but instead to tell the body that votes (the Electoral College) who we want them to vote for. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak takes students from start to finish in the election process. From a candidate declaring their intent to run for office, to swearing in to office and all things in between, this hands on learning project breaks it all down for students to understand. While learning important terms such as what an incumbent is, what is a caucus, and what a candidate's platform is, students create a hands on lapbook filled with hands on activities to help reinforce what they learn about elections and political candidates. U.S. Elections Lap-Pak is typically best suited for elementary and middle-school students between the third and eighth grades. Like other Home School in the Woods material, the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak is a digital file that is installed on the computer. While the digital file must be downloaded (although a physical CD option can be purchased from the company) from the internet, once installed on the computer, no internet access is needed to use the material. All material, including instructions for project assembly, printable masters for each activity, audio file and text material are easily accessed. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak contains a few different components. First, the Lap-Pak begins with a 24 page printable text pamphlet. This contains all the reading material that is covered in the Lap-Pak lapbook. For younger students or those who are audible listeners, an audio version of the text is included. This is also perfect for those who do better to listen while reading along. To help to pick up where the student last left off, the browser base material gives a time index for the beginning of each portion of the text lesson. Topics covered in the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak include: Elections in the United States of America The Different Forms of Government Governments of the People in History America: A New Creation from Old Roots The Three Branches of Government Suffrage The Election Process Running for Office Caucuses and Primaries Running a Presidential Campaign Raising Money Election Day The Electoral College Inauguration Day The Importance of Elections The lapbook includes project includes 21 activities that cover each of these topics. Many projects offer two options - a fully printable project that has text already filled out for most the activities as well as a notebooking style option that allows the student to fill out the necessary information. The material presented is non bias and does not lean towards any one political party but instead just presents the material in a general term. Current candidates running for office at the present are not included. Instead, the Lap-Pak is a very well rounded, general government introduction that can be used during any election process and is not limited to the only upcoming election. How We Used It: Lapbook projects from Home School in the Woods are always a real with our family and this project wasn't any different. From start to finish, the kids have learned all sorts of information about our country's election process. Usually, I allow both kids to do their own lapbooks, however, this time they decided to make one lapbook together. For this review, we decided complete a project each day. First, we would listen to the audio portion of the lesson. I would then lead a discussion with the kids, using the text pamphlet, to make sure they understood the material covered by the audio. That way, if there was something they were confused about or that they didn't completely understand, I was able explain it more in depth. Then we would complete the activity. Here's a look at our completed Lapbook. Now that our lapbook is complete, we are going to hang on to it so that as we get closer to the elections, they can look back at it and refresh their memory. It has also helped to get the kids more involved in the upcoming election and looking forward to watching as the states get awarded to the two candidates and keeping track of the total Electoral votes and the race to 270. Undoubtedly, your television screen and news feeds are filled with politics these days. As caustic and unreasonable as politics appears to be there is no excuse for being ill-informed. We have been given a roll in this country of ours and we all need to be aware of the political process. I was blessed to have some fantastic teachers in High School and then college who were passionate about our system of government. It can be overwhelming to wade through with all the jargon…“electoral colleges” and “delegates” and “super delegates.” I recently received major assistance from Home School in the Woods with HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections. This has been a fun review for Josiah and a good refresher for me! I have raved about Home School in the Woods for years. They simply do excellent work. Home School in the Woods features lap books, timelines, history studies…did I mention their timelines are simply fabulous? I really believe that lapbooking is a terrific hands-on learning tool. HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections is exciting and interactive. I received the downloadable version, but you can purchase the CD if that is more your speed. The study is intended for grades 3-8. Upon receiving my download, I immediately sat down and got a lay of the land. There are a lot of moving parts with this product. There are detailed project directions and instructions for assembly so I wasn’t left in the dark. There are a total of 21 lapbooking activities as well as a printable reading text. I was THRILLED to discover that there are also audio files of the reading text. This is such a help for my dyslexic boy. Sometimes he just needs another voice besides mom’s (which is easily tuned out). I need to tell you that the reading text comes in a handy booklet to print or a 3-page letter sized layout. The picture below is a pretty copy from Home School in the Woods. We chose to print out the 3-page version which is now covered with ketchup. I have made friends with my local printing company (They gave me a Christmas card) so I bit the bullet and sent the whole kit and caboodle off for printing. This was not the most economical decision, but it was a matter of time management. There is a lot of printing. If you do the printing on your own you will need cardstock, colored cardstock, printer paper and colored printer paper. I went around and made sure I had the supplies I needed for all the projects. I consider myself a "lapbook making pro" so I didn’t have to go far and wide for most of it. Not to worry. The supplies are easily found and the Home School in the Woods folks make sure they have provided a thorough list. Now that my prep work was complete we simply started through each section and completed one each day. One vital tip that I learned years ago was to keep all of the completed activities in a plastic baggie. Just be sure to put said plastic baggie somewhere you can find it again. I speak from experience! Another great thing about this lapbook is that you can personalize it to your child’s ability or interest level. Because Josiah is dyslexic (and hates to write) we used the files with text more often than not. This booklet on Terms Of Office simply provided all the text needed to learn. I felt like the text was easy to understand and interesting for the reader. Not all of our projects reached their potential glory. This is Josiah's Economic Policy. Nothing. Much like most of our current presidential candidates. One of my favorite things about lapbooking is that a student doesn’t have to rely on cramming in short term knowledge to succeed. I am not a huge fan of the worksheet so the hands-on books and projects make for a happy lesson. I think that Home School in the Woods simply have some of the most clever and creative lapbooking projects out there. Take for example this presidential candidate. He is movable! He is literally running the Electoral Race! So fun! And what could better illustrate the Three Branches of Government than a tree? Remember how I boasted of my lapbook preparedness? I had brads..just not brads that were best suited for the project! I am sure this is what the creators of this gorgeous lapbook project had in mind when they created it! Football brads! Can you feel the love? This is such an awesome product. The HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections is of such quality that we will be able to enjoy it for some time. U.S. Elections Unit Study includes a lapbook project from Home School in the Woods with tons of information and cut outs to create your own lapbook!
I have discovered that my boys do well with unit studies and lapbooks. Not only do they enjoy being able to pull out the completed project to show friends and family, but they enjoy the process that involves coloring, cutting and pasting. We were recently given the opportunity to review the HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections by Home School In The Woods and I had a feeling that this was going to be a great way to introduce the subject of US Government and the electoral process to my oldest son--something very apropos for a presidential election year! Product Summary Home School in The Woods is a multi-award winning company that is dedicated to providing materials to make history come ALIVE in your classroom! Steering clear of the typical history textbook, Home School in The Woods chooses to help your child make living and real connections with the men, women, places, and events they experience through their history experience, with hands on materials. One of the ways they do this is through their Lap-Pak units. Following the concept of lapbooking, Home School In the Woods has newly designed unit studies for teaching history to children grades K-8. One of the newest of these products is the HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections. This lapbook unit introduces your student to the presidential election process by briefly taking your child back to the foundation of our government structure, through important parts of a presidential campaign, and then to how we choose a new president. This product is designed for grades 3-8 and is available as a downloadable version ($18.95) or a CD version ($19.95). The Lap-Pak activities include: * Definition of “Election” * Different Forms of Government * The American Experiment * The Three Branches of Government * Suffrage * Who Do We Vote For? * Terms of Office * A “Handful” of Political Parties * Caucuses & Primaries * National Conventions * The Presidential Campaign: Platform * The Presidential Campaign: Stump Speaking * The Presidential Campaign: Media — News Source * The Presidential Campaign: Campaign Advertising — Spreading the Word! * Raising Money * Statistics * Election Day * The Electoral College * Inauguration Day * The Electoral Race! * The “Vocabinet” We were given the downloadable version to review with Little Britches, age 10. Using the Product The first step of using the product was to download the link I was provided. This gave a folder that contained images, mp3s, pdfs, and a "start". I began at the beginning--the start, of course! This page gave me a great idea on how to use the product and explained it very well. One of the first things I did was check out the "Directions for Printing the Reading Text". It allowed me to determined what to do with the informational text. It was possible to print it and turn it into a booklet that went with the lapbook, or simply print it out to go in a binder. Since it was for me, I decided to go with the binder and went ahead and printed out the full unit study reading. I discovered by reading the start page, that I even had the option to have the reading text READ to my student for me via audio links. I liked this idea, but decided that unless I really needed to do something else, I would be the principle reader. I checked out the project directions next. This gave me an idea on whether I wanted to do the unit as designed for a lapbook, or if I wanted to go with a notebooking style. I decided to stick with our tried and true winner of lapbooking, so I began printing out the first few lessons. Each lesson is labeled by a title, and the title is alphabetical in a list of pdf files, so you simply find the ones you want and then print them out. To make it a lot easier, I FIRST printed out the information regarding putting each lesson's lapbook portion together. This told me whether I needed to print something multiple times, the type of paper I needed, and how it was going to be used. This saved a lot of trial and error. I decided to start by printing the first 5 lessons. To save time, I also pre-cut a lot of it. Not that Little Britches couldn't on his own, but because this would make it easier for us to complete a lesson within a time frame. Once I had the first few lessons done, I paper clipped them all together in order. The next step was to put together the lapbook's base, which was easy to do using the color directions provided. I pulled the directions up on my laptop while attaching everything and it was easy to complete. I have made lapbooks before, so I had a general idea of what to do. After I had the first few lesson components together, I knew I could just get started. We started this on a Monday and I decided based on the reading for each lesson that we would complete 1-2 lessons a session depending on the lesson's length and the complexity of the lapbook components. The first few lessons had pretty lengthy readings, so we did just one lesson a day. When we began, I gave an introduction on the topic and why I felt it was perfect for the time. Little Britches was rather excited when he discovered it was going to be a lapbook--"I really like putting lapbooks together!" As I decided in advance, we completed one lesson a day for the first week. The lapbook recommends waiting until the very end to put all the pieces of the lapbook together (following their directions for placement), but I like to see how the lapbook progresses, so after completing each week, we attached the elements we had finished. Here are some photos of us working through the lapbook: We worked through one reading passage (I read aloud), and 1-2 lapbook coordinating components per day and we completed our entire lapbook within our review period. The unit took about 15-20 minutes per day over 4-5 days a week. Our Thoughts On The Product Little Britches: "I love lapbooks because they are short lessons and it's fun to look on the whole thing when it's done. It was interesting to learn about how elections are done and now I understand more watching TV with my Papaw right now because he likes politics shows." Me: There are so many great things about this product to mention, but I will try to focus on the things that I like the most. 1. I really enjoy having all the information already provided for me. The notes are there for me to read (or let him read) and then we simply can talk about it and complete the lapbook piece for it. Sometimes unit studies can be discouraging when you have to go round up all the resources yourself. 2. The instructions for using the product were very detailed, but allowed for some leeway--like letting your child write something out instead of printing it for them. It was easy to follow along with the printing directions to know what kind of paper I needed to use and how it all fit together. 3. It worked well having short lessons. My son learns best with concise lessons. I handed him the lapbook components and then read aloud while he colored or cut the pieces. Each piece only took us about 15-20 minutes, but the information was very comprehensive. 4. Good for different learning types and ages. This product provided the lesson that could be worked on independently by the student or used as a read aloud. The lesson was in visual form to be printed or read, and audio form to be listened to. Thus, this makes it a good product for a larger spectrum of ages. I felt my reading aloud was a great fit for my 4th grader. If he had been older, I would have had him read, or better yet, listen to the audio clips. Because the lesson information is provided, it would be easy to fit it to your child's needs. 5. I appreciated that the information was presented without bias. Because it's an election/politics lapbook, there is always a chance for a bias. But this information was strictly taken from the federal and state level laws and also focused on the Constitution. A simple play-by-play about how an election works logistically. 6. Lapbooks are great for using as a portfolio of sorts. Now that we have completed the lapbook, I can easily store it in my files and have Little Britches reference it later in our studies. There won't be any extra papers anywhere to worry about. 7. It's all digital. Now that I have this lapbook, I will be able to pull it out and use the same information for my younger son at a later date--and it's all saved on my flash drive! There is a definite bonus to having it all as a download. 8. The supplies are standard for any classroom. I love that everything that is required is available easily! The main supplies are colored papers, cardstock, crayons and scissors. Sometimes you need brads for moving parts. I never have to go buy anything for these projects! Cons? There are two that I would put forth as the main ones. *If you don't have a good printer, then you will be in trouble because all the pieces of this lapbook get printed out. There is a lot of paper and ink being used just for the lapbook components. Fortunately, we have a good printer and I restocked my ink. I also have a lot of different types of paper which is a plus for lapbook work. *There is a lot of prep work that goes into a lapbook. If you have a child that isn't a strong cutter, you will need to do the cutting in advance, or allow for a lot more time. There are also pieces to be printed on numerous different sheets of paper, so you need to spend a good amount of time getting everything ready to use. Unless you prepare every piece for the lapbook, it's NOT an open and go. Some of the lessons I prepared in advance, and some of them I let Little Britches do the cutting. Will we continue to use this product? Well, we actually were able to finish the whole lapbook, which is great! But I definitely plan on investigating some of the other lapbooks this company has because this one worked so well for us! Would I Recommend This Product? HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections is a great product for the child that does better with short concise lessons, and needs things to manipulate and move to keep them focused. This is a great product if you are trying to teach multiple age groups under one topic. The lap-PAK is great for someone who doesn't mind having to do quite a bit of prep work for a lesson. This is also a great product if you need something that is already researched for you. The lapbook promotes more creativity than typical activities as there are some open ended activities, and there are movable pieces and coloring involved. I wouldn't recommend this product if you like an open-and-go product with little prep work. It also might not be a good choice if you have a child that doesn't work well with putting together projects. Someone who is more of a classical or traditional style teaching method, won't like that there aren't simple reading and writing activities. I also recommend that you observe the age range because this product is definitely for the 3rd-8th grade level child. I believe that the price is very reasonable for the quality and comprehensiveness of the unit--and because you can use the product over and over with future children since it is downloadable. It is great to hear him use his new knowledge as he discusses what he sees about the current 2016 election year with his Papaw and I know it will be nice to have this lapbook to refer back to later! Can you believe that this year, in November, we get to elect another new president of the United States?! Well, what better way to teach the kids about the election process than with HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections from Home School in the Woods. This product review is the first Lap-Pak (or lapbook) I have ever used in our homeschool. You won't believe how brilliant it is . . . HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections This unit study is one that I have never worked with before. But boy oh boy,

Goodness, I just LOVE Amy Pak's Home School in the Woods products! Really, you don't hear me gush too often, but I'm telling you, she creates something really special! If you've been reading my blog for a while, you may have seen other Home School in the Woods products that I have reviewed in the past, one as recently as this summer (Home School in the Woods: Project Passport World History Study: Ancient Egypt), as well as near the very beginning of my blogging with the New Testament Activity Pak in Spring 2009, and a couple in-between, Olde World Style Maps in winter 2010, and the Great Empires Review in spring 2013. This time we were sent a very timely and appropriate product for review, HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections. Eldest is all set to vote in the Super Tuesday Primary! For the purposes of our review (especially with this specific pak, given that it *is* an election year, and I have a new "Millennial Voter" in the house), we chose to do this study together, and everyone had a part. This was a great gap-filler/review for my olders, and introduction for my youngest into the political process. This particular product was sent to us as a digital download. When you open the zip file up it should look something like this: The easiest way to go about things is to click that "Start" file at the bottom. It will open up in a browser window that has everything laid out for you. You can see that I have the main page open, as well as the Full Page Text, the Project Directions, and the Lapbook Assembly Directions. The Homes School in the Woods products do require a little organization on our end, but the end product is sooooo worth it! (And so much of the organizing has been done for us, we just need to put it into action!) All the way through, with almost every project, my 18 year old daughter kept exclaiming how neat each one was, and how almost each one surpassed the next. This truly is a product for all ages. :) Our Process I decided to print ALL the pieces ahead of time so that we wouldn't have to stop to print before each section. It took me about 45 minutes to an hour to collect the assorted papers/cardstock sheets, put them in the correct order, and to print them. The text: One can choose to: Use the audio MP3s (this is great if mom has lost her voice, or even just to give her a break... my kids greatly prefer when I read to them, so we listened to the audio enough to note that it is read by a very pleasant male voice) ***Read aloud (via the "Full Page Text")*** (This was our choice) Have the student independently read the printable booklet. (We didn't print it up ourselves, so I'm including a photo of the booklet for your information) Projects for Lap-Pak: When completing the projects, it is important to use and follow the project directions, as some answers are found there, and not in the text. cooperative coloring project between 8 and 18 year olds Mom read the text out loud (With the exception of our brief foray into the well done audio). Eldest (who has an affinity for things paper-pieced) was in charge of the cutting/pasting/assembling of each project. She also helped out with some of the coloring, which ended up being a cooperative effort. Middlest was mostly responsible for anything that required being hand-written, as well as being on the hook to help answer questions. He did a little bit of cutting, and coloring as well. Youngest did the majority of the coloring, and was also involved in answering questions, "dictating" some of them to his older brother. ;) A few things to note: There are 21 different labbook projects which correspond to the text. I didn't time it, but I would guess that if you do 2-3 projects/day it will take about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes (depending on your student, whether they are coloring in detail, or whether you simply print on colored paper, with no coloring), reading to finished project. You choose how much time to spend by how much you do each day. *You should allow for 1-2 hours to assemble the lapbook once all the project pieces are assembled, and you will probably go through almost an entire roll of double stick tape. :) Finished Lapbook Here are some more photos of our project with a few closer details (kids were camera shy as everyone is dealing with colds and feeling a little miserable, so you just get to see their handiwork): As you can see, my 18 year old daughter had fun adding some detail to various parts of different projects~ stars, stripes, and fireworks, anyone? This was very enjoyable to do as a family project. As I mentioned before, it was definitely a good review/gap-filler for my older children, as well as a good introduction to the political process for our youngest. Now he understands more of what we're talking about as we've listened to some of the debates and have discussed the caucus and primaries that have taken place thus far. I highly recommend the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak for any homeschool. Well, here it is....my first review for the new year. I was extremely excite when I was chosen for this review. With this being an election year, I knew the HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections from Home School in the Woods would be a superb way for the kids to learn about our government and the whole election process. For this review, we received the download version. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak can be purchased two ways, a physical CD version can be purchased for $19.95 or a download version for $18.95. So What is the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak? First off, it's a wonderful way to introduce students to the United States government and election process. The Lap-Pak is filled a wide variety of hands-on activities for students to earn all about the election process. The Lap-Pak contains 21 lapbooking projects. The projects will focus on various topics...... Forms of Government Three Branches of Government Suffrage Election Process Why We Vote Political Parties Campaigning & Money Statistics Election Day Inauguration Day and so much more! The projects will have the students working on writing projects, drawings, creative projects, coloring, research, and tiny booklets. The Lap-Pak comes with a 24 page booklet for reading and reference. You can print it in two different ways a 5x7 booklet or if you prefer an 8x10 book. We chose an 8x10 book. It was easier to print that way. The booklets provide all the information you need to do the lapbooking projects. The book is easy to read and understand. It helps the students fill in their projects. So How Did We Use It? "Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will have to sit on their blisters." Abraham Lincoln We added this into our weekly schedule. We spent 2-3 days a week on a new section. We did fall behind 2 weeks because of a nasty bug that went through our house. The first thing I did was look over the introduction. Everything you need to know is there! It has all the supplies needed listed, a book list, a website resource list, a list of projects that will be completed, and instructions on how to make you lapbook. We headed to the library and collected our books. I collected the file folders and card-stock to create the kids lapbooks. I put the lapbooks together while the kids worked on math. I wanted them ready to go for them. It was fairly easy to do. I'm sure older kids could assemble them. I gave Michael and Therese a copy of the U.S. Elections booklet. I chose to print it out in a standard 8x10 form. I thought it would be easier to assemble and maybe it wouldn't get lost as easily. Small books tend to disappear around here. After a brief introduction into why we are studying the process of the U.S. elections and the history of our government, we got down to work. The kids found the projects easy to do and understand. The topic is introduced and the main ideas are reinforced by the projects. We spend class time reading the U.S. Election booklet together. I have them take turns reading. I've encouraged both the kids to read the additional books we checked out at the library to get even more information. "The ballot is stronger than the bullet." Abraham Lincoln "Mankind will never see the end to trouble until.....lovers of wisdom come to hold political power, or the holders of power...become lovers of wisdom." Plato, The Republic So What Do We Think of the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak? We love it. It's full of great information and fun activities to help with learning about our election process! We are really enjoying this lapbook. We are not yet finished with it but the kids are eager to learn and we can't wait to see what else we will learn about with this lapbook. I think the kids have learned a lot about how our government was formed and why it's so important to understand the whole election process. Creating informed voters is essential for our country. I certainly do not want to send my kids out into the world picking a candidate because of how hip they seem, what they may promise, flashy commercials, etc. I want my children to be educated about the process and know how to weed through the "jungle" and see what is really there. An educated decision is a wise decision. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak provides everything you need to teach your children about the election process. This is important to me. All I had to do was look over the introduction and collect the materials we needed. The best, if you don't have the exact stuff listed, you can easily find substitutions around the house. Having everything all set to go is less work for me. I know the products from Home School in the Woods are high quality and I know I can trust them. I never have to worry about the information being provided. The kids find the projects interesting and the projects always help reinforce the main points being covered for that subject Michael has enjoyed how the projects have made the topics interesting to learn about. He likes the hands-on aspect of the lapbook. He's not a big fan of workbooks, so lapbooks are a favorite project for him. "Lapbooks are not boring!" My kids are not fans of all the coloring, but again you can decide what they have to do. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak is a great way to get children interested in our election process.
