We see this brief introductory note in Helaman 13, “the Nephites did still remain in wickedness". Then something unexpected happens in the Book of Mormon. We hear the voice of a Lamanite preaching repentance to the Nephites. Samuel the Lamanite’s words are important for many reasons.

As the Book of Mormon and prophets since the beginning of the Restoration have made clear, the modern native peoples of North and South America, or those with Native American ancestry, occupy an important place in the unfolding of God’s work among His children in the latter days. But additional information is important in helping readers realize that the identity of those called Lamanites in the Book of Mormon is nuanced and complicated.
In the Book of Mormon, a group of converted Lamanites made a covenant with God to never take up their weapons again. Even as their enemies descended down to slaughter them, they refused to shed another drop of blood. However, in the midst of their possible destruction, their sons volunteered to fight in their behalf. […]
Today we learned about Samuel the Lamanite. I gave an overview of the story using bricks to help fill in the wall. After we read the scriptures and learned about Samuel's warnings I did this activity with my students. I printed out one brick and one arrow for each student. On the arrow they wrote what problems or challenges that they face today. On the brick they wrote a scripture that stood out to them in Helaman 13-16. I loved that almost every student found a scripture about Christ and told how it comforted them. Then I had them come up to the board and place the brick and the arrow on the board to form a wall. Here are the printouts for this. Samuel the Lamanite I copied off of Google Images but it linked back to the LDS color pages. Arrows I printed these out on gray cardstock Bricks I printed these out on red paper To see all of my Book of Mormon Seminary Ideas just click here.
Nephi and Lehi were mighty missionaries. When guards tried to execute them in a Lamanite prison, they were protected by a divine fire. Hundreds of others inside the prison witnessed the miracle. They saw the fire protecting Nephi and Lehi and then experienced the miracle for themselves. I created this object lesson to help kids understand what it's like to see something that flames should consume, withstand the heat. To teach it, you'll create a simple tube of paper from the printable file. After dipping it in a simple solution of water, rubbing alcohol, and salt, you'll light the paper. The flames will roar for 5-10 seconds and then go out - without any damage to the paper. You can repeat this object lesson multiple times with the same printed page. I walk you through how to use and teach this object lesson in this video here: https://youtu.be/fS734NBhsLw?si=9Kfof7_cXhnpmF6r This set includes a 3-page PDF file: Page 1: Assembly instructions, photos, and object lesson details Page 2: Full-color paper tube (prints 1 per page) Page 3: Grayscale paper tube (prints 1 per page) You'll need paper/cardstock, scissors, a stapler, and rubbing alcohol to create this object lesson. This listing is for the printable INSTANT DOWNLOAD version of this file. Once your payment is processed, an email with the download link will be sent to your account (usually within minutes). The link will direct you to the pdf file, which you can print at home or send to a professional printer. NO ITEMS WILL BE MAILED TO YOU. This is my lesson planned for tomorrow; Samuel the Lamanite. I taught a lesson today that had a similar bold prophet whom the Nephites rejected. Nephi, the son of Helaman, had just called the wicked Nephites in Zarahemla to repentance. They are heavily infiltrated with Gadianton Robbers throughout their society. Their righteous are being persecuted, and their morals and government laws have been corrupted. Nephi, without concern for his own position, or safety, boldly declares the truth. Over the last week or two, I have been listening to a podcast that I subscribe to on iTunes. It is called "Conversations: A Mormon Channel Original". Conversations features interviews with people of interest to the LDS community—General Authorities, Auxiliary leaders, and faithful Latter-day Saints. The interview I listened to this week was conducted by Sister Sheri Dew interviewing Elder Dallin H. Oaks and Sister Kristen Oaks. Sister Dew commented that Elder Oaks seemed very bold, clear, and direct, yet kind in how he teaches principles of the gospel. She asked Elder and Sister Oaks to comment on how Elder Oaks is able to speak with such clarity, boldness, and fearlessness. In paraphrasing Sister Oaks' response she said that as an Apostle of the Lord, he's called to speak the TRUTH, especially in these times of great darkness. It is difficult for people to hear, and it will become more difficult to hear as time goes on. He, and all the leaders of the Church, are worried for the welfare of souls. He'll be a spokesman for the Lord because he carries it in his heart. Elder Oaks stated that he is most worried to do what is right, and not much worried about pleasing other people (audience, peers, or anyone else). He's only worried about pleasing the Lord. "I want to know what He wants me to do, and I don't have much concern about my own position or positioning myself for my own personal advantage." When he has had opposition to some of the things he's taught, that has not bothered him. "I'm just concerned about whether I've done what the Lord wants me to do, and done it as well as it can be done by me." I played a short 5 minute exerpt from this interview for my class today so they could hear Elder Oaks' voice for themselves. I believe they were impacted by his sincerity and candor. As we go through the scriptures, we can list the many prophets who have been sent to teach the principles and doctrines of Jesus Christ to the world. As some of them have called a specific group of people to repentance, many of them have been criticized, persecuted, and even killed because of their testimonies. As men who are called to speak truth, I am grateful for their documented testimonies in the scriptures and I admire their courage. Our modern day prophets are no different. They are just as courageous (if not more), and there is no doubt in my mind that they are sent to declare truth to us and the world for the Lord, Jesus Christ. Since I'm teaching Samuel the Lamanite tomorrow, I had to show you this awesome idea. Isn't this a great excuse to make Rice Krispy Treats????? My "Samuel" is going to be a little Playmobil indian instead of this cool figurine, but it'll get the job done.
The extraordinary missionary work of the sons of Mosiah as recorded in Alma 17–27 resulted in a wave of Lamanite conversions. Not only were Lamanite lower-classes converted, but also their royalty. Among those converted were groups of Lamanites taught by Ammon, who, upon their conversion, took the name Anti-Nephi-Lehies.
This lesson is meant to be a discussion. There are a few things you need to do to prepare yourself, but for the most part, it is a great opportunity to talk WITH your kids about "Standing With Faith"! The magic comes in the activity! That is what is SURE to make this a lesson your kids will always remember! *Right now we MUST be willing to stand up for what is right! There is so much going on in this world right now. So many things that are tools of the adversary; meant to pull our children away from the Gospel. *READ and be prepared to tell the story of Samuel the Lamanite found in HELAMAN 13-15. *We discussed how Samuel was willing to follow the Lord's command to preach repentance to the Nephites, even if it meant putting his life in danger. He trusted the Lord and was willing to do ALL that the Lord commanded him. We talked about how he was protected and the stones and arrows of the Nephites were unable to hit him. *We also discussed other Prophets such as Abinadi, who were asked to prophesy and preach and who ultimately gave their lives for their testimony. *We discussed Joseph Smith in the Liberty Jail. We talked about how he prayed so desperately for Heavenly Father to come and help them. Then we read one of my very favorite scriptures. Part of Heavenly Fathers answer to that prayer, D&C 122:5-9: "If thou art called to pass through tribulation; if thou art in perils among false brethren; if thou art in perils among robbers; if thou art in perils by land or by sea; If thou art accused with all manner of false accusations; if thine enemies fall upon thee; if they tear thee from the society of thy father and mother and brethren and sisters; and if with a drawn sword thine enemies tear thee from the bosom of thy wife, and of thine offspring, and thine elder son, although but six years of age, shall cling to thy garments, and shall say, My father, my father, why can’t you stay with us? O, my father, what are the men going to do with you? and if then he shall be thrust from thee by the sword, and thou be dragged to prison, and thine enemies prowl around thee like wolves for the blood of the lamb; And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he? Therefore, hold on thy way, and the priesthood shall remain with thee; for their bounds are set, they cannot pass. Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever. " *The activity was an idea from my friend MyR. I did not tell my hubby before hand that he would be the victim of the activity and I didn't tell my kids until the moment I broke out the marshmellows! I wish you could have heard their squeals of delight at the very idea! The idea..... My hubby played Samuel the Lamanite. He stood in front of the kids and called them to repentance. The kids, pelted Dad with Marshmellows! Yes, Samuel was not actually hit by any of the arrows or rocks and Dad was surely pegged by more than a few marshmellows. I told the kids that we are using marshmellows because they can't hurt Dad with them (until my eldest winds up and beans Dad right in the kisser with a mellow). It was all in good fun and a good way to re-enact the Samuel the Lamanite story! We all had a blast! (Sorry about picture quality. My camera was spazin' with all the movement and poor lighting and Yes! That may be genuine fear on my hubby's face! Haha) For dessert: S'mores! Cooked over the flame of the gas stove. :)

Chapter 20 of Mosiah begins with the statement: “There was a place in Shemlon where the daughters of the Lamanites did gather themselves together to sing, and to dance.” Just as the month of February means Valentine’s Day to many Americans, the Fifteenth of Av had romantic significance to the ancient Israelites.

In Mormon 4, the Lamanites took women and children prisoner and sacrificed them to idols. In Ancient America and the Ancient Near East, people were sometimes sacrificed to idols on the death of a ruler so they could serve that person in the afterlife. Evidence from both of these areas also suggest that the Lamanites might have done this in order to get a god to fight for them or to get their crops to grow better during wartime. The fact that a people once chosen of God fell so low reminds the modern reader to avoid influences that can drag down good followers of Christ.

Amlici is a rebellious Nephite who wants to become a king. He leads a faction away and they call themselves Amlicites. After having internal wars with the Nephi they join ranks with the Lamanites. All of this happens in Alma 2-3, and then the Amlicites are seemingly never heard from again. What happened to them? Some scholars have argued that the Amalekites, who show up later in Alma, are actually the same group as the Amlicites.

Samuel the Lamanite faced angry people who didn’t want to listen to his message. Because of his faith in the Lord and in his calling, Samuel was able to continue preaching and helped prepare hearts for the coming of Christ. This Book of Mormon lesson teaches us about being bold, having faith, and sharing the […]

Alma 3 could be seen as disapproving of any kind of exogamy, yet this would fail to take context into consideration. At this point in Nephite history, ethnic and religious strife between the Nephites and Lamanites-Amlicites was so severe that war resulted. Intermarriage with the enemy at a time of war would’ve been unthinkable. At an equally volatile time in their history, the Israelites were forbidden from intermarrying with Canaanites, lest they abandon their covenants with the Lord. This is not to say that interracial marriage is inherently sinful. Rather, the Book of Mormon describes instances where intermarriage was not expedient because of specific circumstances. While the principles of the gospel found in the Book of Mormon are timeless, some of its other teachings are largely couched in specific historical contexts.
