I love the way we created our class agreements this year. First, students participated in a carousel activity where they went around the room to each poster. They had a pile of small post it notes that they used to respond to the questions- A Great Classmate, IS-DOES-SAYS-DOES NOT... A Terrific Teacher, IS-DOES-SAYS-DOES NOT... A Learner, IS-DOES-SAYS-DOES NOT... A Classroom of Learners, IS- LOOKS LIKE- FEELS... Then each group of 4 students looked at all of the responses and came up with their own class agreements. Finally, we put them all together and this is what they came up with. I think they did a great job!
The children are going to create a picture today by drawing and/or using stickers. Place all the items (stickers, crayons, pencils, etc.) out in the center of the table. The group will get a practical...
Music is organized sound. I like to give students opportunities to organize sound and icons for sounds before we work with organizing notation. One of the ways I do that is to create sound songs. We take a basic grid and brainstorms sounds we can make with our bodies (APPROPRIATE sounds *giggle*) and then draw shapes and simple picture to represent them. We draw them into the grid so that they are organized and then perform them for each other. FUN! Another thing I like to do is work with ready icons for body percussion. I introduce this in Kindergarten, but we review it in 1st and 2nd grades and add a composing element to it. Until recently I used a pretty old set of body percussion clip art to create a slide show. Here's what the new version looks like: I used this with some classes this week and they loved it! We talked about one sound to the beat means a quarter note and one picture in each square. After we add barred eighth notes or two sounds on one beat we'll take some time to compose our own. I'll print out little copies of all the body percussion actions and they will place them on the squares in the grid and perform. When we finish or as we begin to use this activity just to review or as a warm-up I'll add some body percussion worksheets to the end of class or to workstations. I'll be using these: Quick enough to do in the last ten minutes of class or at a workstation, I really like making connections to reading and writing AND music. Check out the Body Percussion set HERE.

In our school, we have our regular classes and then we have an Advisory. We see them everyday at least in passing, but we have lessons with them once a week and then SSR one day a week. This year I have Juniors for Advisory and the lesson that was presented to us was a "Superhero" lesson...and knowing the kids I had in Advisory - I didn't think it would go too well. So I found this idea on Pinterest and decided to give it a try. Here was the inspiration: This was a two day activity; on day one the kids did "speed dating." I set them up across from each other and gave them 2 minutes to really get to know each other. I told them they had to 'sell themselves' and what their best qualities and interests are. Then I had them rotate to the next person until they had talked to each person in the advisory. I was a little worried they wouldn't buy in, but they really got into it after the first few rounds and talked a lot to each other. On day two, they came in and i explained how they were going to use the information they gained about their peers. One at a time a student would go up to the whiteboard and stand facing me. Then their peers would go around them and write characteristics about the person. *I kept an eye out to make sure they stayed school appropriate* Then I took their picture. I had a student erase the words around them before the student at the board could move. So no one was able to read what others wrote until the picture reveal. We repeated this process for all the kids, finally when we had done all of them - they wanted to do it for me. I let them - but you gotta give these kids some credit, because standing up there all vulnerable was actually pretty scary. But I was impressed with their willingness to participate and work together as a group. Here are pictures of my kids and what others said: When i printed them, I had to go back and add sharpies to the writing because it was kinda hard to read...but overall; they turned out pretty good. The last step was that I made a bulletin board in my room with all of their pictures and with the help of Facebook and Edmodo - we came up with the title as "We are..." The kids really enjoyed the reveal and had a good time with the activity. I was proud of them!
In the ELSA Well being group we had a little game of coming up with words to use for mindfulness. This is the result so thank you ladies for your help.
First Graders are learning to read and perform quarter notes (ta), barred eighth notes (titi) and quarter rests (shh). To practice these skills we created caterpillar rhythms. 1. The head of the caterpillar stands for "one, two, ready go" 2. Add one body piece and then perform the rhythm starting with "one, two, ready, go". By starting each time this way the tempo is established. 3. Next, add another caterpillar body part and repeat. 4. The tail stands for "The End". (Teachers: You can get a version of this HERE).

One of my favorite beginning of the year ice breakers is the M&Ms game. Each student gets a few M&Ms (I go with 2-3 each) and then they share a fact about them according to the color of M&Ms they have. This year I made a cute little sign to go with it. Want a copy? Leave me a comment & follow my blog. I'm giving this away to the first 3 people that comment and the first 5 new followers! Click THIS LINK to download a copy! Enjoy!

Ever buy a really great dress or amazing shirt? It probably makes you feel good when you put it on and gives you confidence for the day. But the thing about a great dress or fancy shirt is it needs to be taken care of and cannot be cleaned with just any detergent. There are care instructions so that the piece of clothing can last and be enjoyed for a long time. Consider the amount of attention we give articles of clothing - what if we gave that same attention to our relationships? We all respond to experiences differently and it is important that we respect those differences. We cannot assume that we know what a person's reactions mean, but we can use the great gift of communication to learn more about those we love. Care tags are a wonderful way to help children understand their reactions to emotions. They also allow children to identify how others can best support them when they are feeling a specific emotion. When a child feels understood, he is better able to accept his emotions and consider healthy ways to handle them. This understanding can create open communication and feelings of safety and love. These care tags are great for kids who are learning about emotions, but they are also helpful in other relationships, especially for those dating or married. Update: Thank you Jodi Smith, LCSW, RPT-S for finally giving me a reference for this activity! I had been taught it years ago during internship, but never knew its originality. Now you all will have a reference as well as a resource for more therapeutic activities to use! Enjoy! Smith, J. (2008). Care Tags. In Lowenstein, L(Ed.)
