Planning a kids' party? Need inspiration? How about a Minecraft-themed party? I've pulled together lots of fun ideas for Minecraft fans to help you plan the perfect event. Let's party!
Little M&M chose Pokémon for his birthday party theme this year. Although this is not something I am terribly familiar with, I still had a ton of fun putting this party together for him. Take a look at some of our party details below: FOOD Here is our beverage table (the free printable water bottle labels came from here): Our party began at 2pm, so we just served snack foods at the beginning of the party, cake at the end of the party and then ordered pizza for whomever was still around at night. This was a family-only party so that was basically everyone! Here are the foods we served as people arrived: And here are our three homemade cookie cakes. We wanted to use primarily chocolate/vanilla frosting so we only made one Pokéball cake out of pre-packaged, colored frosting. PARTY ACTIVITIES and GAMES We love putting together fun games for our parties! Here is what we did today: GAME #1: This game was for the kids and the adults. We simply placed gummy worms in a jar and asked our guests to guess how many "caterpie" were in the jar. At the end of the party we peeked at the guesses, and the person who guessed the right amount (or came the closest) was able to take the jar home with them! GAME #2: Our first hands-on activity of the day was to design a pokéball. We purchased smooth foam balls from the craft store, and offered crayons for them to use to draw on them. I found a perfect chart on Google with some of the most popular pokéballs to serve as inspiration (though the link is faulty so I cannot credit the original maker of this awesome chart). Some of the kids decorated a specific pokéball from the chart: and others designed their very own: GAME #3: Our next game was a scavenger hunt! I created this pokédex in Photoshop Elements and hid each Pokémon image featured on it around the main level of the house. This was surprisingly a super engaging and well-loved activity! The kids were so excited to run around looking high and low for these Pokémon. Later when asked what his favorite part of the party was, the scavenger hunt was definitely mentioned! GAME #4: One thing I know about Pokémon is that you've "Gotta catch 'em all!" So that was the main idea behind this next game. I purchased red and white bowls from the Dollar Tree, and added one Pokémon image to each, with increasing point values. The kids had to use their own pokéball (which they decorated earlier in the party) to toss into the bowls. After five throws, the person with the highest sum of points was the winner. They stood behind a masking tape line just a few feet away from the first bowl. Each kid threw the ball five times, and I was so pleased that everyone got at least a couple shots into the bowls. Some sharp throwers even "caught" the 100-point MewTwo! GAME #5: I discovered this fun science activity on this website. It was such a great addition to the party! We purchased a bag of miniature Pokémon from Amazon. Using a 2:1 mixture of baking soda and water, we hid them inside little eggs. Then, using pipettes and vinegar, the kids were able to "hatch" some Pokémon eggs! We were lucky in that our bag of assorted Pokémon contained 6 Pikachus! So we were sure to include those (distinguishing them with yellow food coloring dots on the eggs) to ensure each guest could hatch a Pikachu (only my two kids had to share one). We had each of the 7 kids hatch a total of three eggs, and then they could take them home with them! For the kids this was a big hit, but note that the vinegar smell was strong at this moment, and the adults definitely noticed! Perhaps open a window or do this activity outside if you are able! GAME #6: Our final game was a Beedrill Balloon Pop! We always like to have some kind of balloon game at our parties, but I wanted something different than the usual. So we blew up about 50-60 yellow and black balloons, filling some of them with images of Weedles and Kakunas (these are lesser evolved Beedrills). The object of the game was for the kids to pop all the balloons to find the one balloon containing the Mega Beedrill (the highest evolved Beedrill). They had SO much fun doing this. And...if you could believe it...the Mega Beedrill was discovered in the very LAST balloon! PRIZES Obviously the winner of the first game, guessing the number of Caterpies in the jar, received the jar of Caterpies. But for the other games that yielded a winner (Gotta Catch 'Em All and Beedrill Balloon Pop) we gave away these chocolate bar "medals." I quickly printed a little image to put on each of them. PARTY FAVORS I turned white favor bags into pokéballs using construction paper. Inside each was a Pokémon cup (Party City), Pokémon pencils and tattoos (Amazon) and some miniature chocolate bars with Pokémon face labels (free labels from here). Obviously, each guest also brought home their decorated pokéballs and the three figurines they each hatched from eggs. It was a tremendous success, and Little M&M was so happy! Kyle's actual birthday is March 26th, but due to scheduling issues with Spring Break, school events, etc., he wasn't able to have his party until April 21st! Seriously, I didn't think he would make it. He was that dismayed to have his birthday party scheduled so far off!!! Even though it didn't seem like it to him, his birthday party was here before we knew it! Since he totally loves Minecraft, he decided to go with a Minecraft theme for his birthday. I found a really neat, inexpensive Minecraft digital scrapbooking set on Etsy that had 17 patterns as well as some boxes that you could make. I figured that I could definitely use that, so I ordered it. I started with his invitations, so that our friends and family would know that we weren't forgetting Kyle's birthday party but it just had to be pushed back a little. I found a lot of neat Minecraft birthday ideas online, so I picked the ones that I thought were the neatest, most inexpensive and easy to make projects for us to do. Delaney was a great help, and she made a lot of these projects. We started with Minecraft snacks. We had TNT (cherry-flavored licorice), CREEPER (Andes mints), GOLD (caramel kisses), DIAMONDS (cookies n' cream kisses), and COAL (dark chocolate covered cashews) snacks. We also printed out several of the boxes from the digital kit, I cut a bunch of them out, and then Delaney put them all together for us. Delaney also made all the kids their own set of Minecraft tools (out of perler beads). She made everyone a shovel, sword, axe and pick-axe. She had to make six complete sets, and as she was making them all -- Kyle had a special request to have a diamond sword. :-) So he ended up having his very own 'birthday tools' set. They turned out really cute; she did a great job. We weren't even sure that some of the older kids would really want their own set, but we figured better safe than sorry. :-) Next, we worked on some Steve and Creeper masks. Again, we made enough so that each kid had their own mask. We used paper bags for the base, and I raided my scrapbooking cardstock for all the squares. I cut all the squares, while Delaney glued them all down. I also made Kyle a birthday banner, that Delaney again got to help put together. I think she was definitely Minecrafted out by the end of all our preparations for the party. :-) Kenny got to help make some spider decorations in the room. I can't believe that I let them put 'spiders' up as decorations. :-) And once again, Aunt Danah made an awesome birthday cake. (She said she had waaaaaay too many jelly beans left over.) It was finally time for the party! Yeah! The kids were all great sports and donned the Minecraft masks for a picture. :-) The boys were all Steve, while the two girls went for the Creeper masks. Don't they look great? I just LOVE this picture. And here are all the kids unmasked, somehow I never got a really good picture of all of them. They were apparently having too much fun messing around with their minecraft tools. Starting in the back, left to right, we have Delaney, Connor and Parker; then in the front we have Michael, Kyle and Teresa. It's hard to believe that our 'baby' is 10 years old!!! Both our kids are in double digits now. (* gasp *) Then it was time for gifts. :-) Kyle was psyched, and he did a great job reading out everyone's cards and announcing the gifts. He got more awesome Minecraft and Star Wars shirts, more clothes for school, video games and two more X-Box controllers as well as gift cards and some cash. He's a very lucky little boy, to have such good family and friends celebrate his birthday with him!!! Afterwards the kids wasted no time in getting the other two controllers hooked up, so that four of them could play at the same time. Good times!!! We love you, Kyle! ~ Ken, Dani & Dee

This was before he made them Scrub the Decks and Walk the Plank! Anchors, Pirate Parrot, Gold Treasure, Jewells and Gems. BONE Appetite Compass. Ye Pirates Be Warned..... Ethan is turning 5. Pirate Birthday Cake Chocolate Mud Cake decorated with RTR Icing. Paige decided she wanted a Survivor themed birthday party. This one took quite a bit of preparation before the party, but the girls had a really good time. I even made a custom logo that we used on the invitations and also the tribe buffs. Here's Paige at the start of the party - wearing her "buff" and holding our tiki man voting container (old formula can covered with paper mache and painted). As the girls arrived, they drew their buffs (which determined which tribe they were on) and then they went to their tribe 'camp' and worked on their tribe flags, tribe name, and mascot. We had two tribes - the green tribe became the Polka Dotted Panthers: And the blue tribe was the Shaba-Laba-Ding-Dongs and their lovely mascot had a cheetah front end and a zebra read end :-) Then we got started on the challenges. For the first challenge, each team designated a 'caller' who stood on their tribe mat and directed teams of two that were tied together at the wrist and blindfolded out into the yard to find bags of puzzle pieces. They had to bring each bag back to the mat separately and the caller had to direct both sets of tribemates at the same time - by yelling at them which direction to go. Once they retrieved all three bags full of puzzle pieces, they had to untie the bags that were knotted really well and then assemble their puzzles... After that was our very first Tribal Council, where the girls from the winning tribe all voted for who they thought did the best in the challenge. There was no 'voting off the island' in Birthday Survivor :-) The next challenge was the infamous food challenge. The girls went head to head against the other tribe with mystery ingredients. First girl to finish her portion and stick our her tongue showing an empty mouth earned a point for her tribe. I figured I couldn't get away with anything too gross so it was all standard grocery-store fare: pimento stuffed olives, sauerkraut (pictured above), potted meat, baby food peas, and sardines. We ended up with a tie, so the tiebreaker was Wasabi Peas - each person had to eat two and the tribe that finished first won. The next challenge was an endurance competition. Who can stand on one leg on a brick the longest? After two minutes, they had to put their hands on top of their heads... after another two minutes they had to lift their non-standing leg out in front of them, etc. The next challenge involved two balance beams with a large bucket of water at one end and two empty containers at the other end. The girls had to walk across the beam and collect water through whatever means possible... mouth, hands, hair, buff... and then return across the balance beam and deposit the water in their tribe's container. Once they made it across the next tribemate went. If someone fell off the beam in the middle, they had to start over. First tribe to fill their container won. There were a couple more challenges, including the typical Survivor auction, but not as many pictures were taken. We headed inside where Paige had a Tiki Man cake: Then we opened presents, the girls played for a little while, and then they camped out in a tent in the backyard. A good time was had by all, but we all got very little sleep. In the morning I made muffins and sent them on their way! Happy 11th Birthday Paige!
