Cydonia oblonga , in het nederlands kweepeer genaamd, is een kleine bladverliezende boom met een dichtvertakte, opgaande , parasolachtige vorm. De bladeren zijn ovaal tot eirond, middengroen en gaafrandig, het jonge uitlopende blad is witviltig. Deze kweepeer bloeit in mei en juni met geurende witte tot witroze bloemen waaruit later de peervormige gele vruchten ontstaan. Cydonia oblonga houdt van een standplaats in de halfschaduw of zon en een goed doorlaatbare, gematigd vruchtbare grond. Deze kwee is goed winterhard, verdraagt goed luchtvervuiling maar heeft soms last van bacterievuur en ongedierte zoals rode spintmijt en fruitmot.

Native to the eastern Mediterranean, Quince Trees were a favourite of the Greeks and Romans; Cydonia oblonga may have been brought to the UK with the Roman occupation, but the first recorded cultivation of Quince Trees in England was in 1275 when Edward I planted some quince trees at the Tower of London.The dark green leathery leaves emerge in early spring, followed by the pale pink to white fragrant blossoms in late May, borne at the end of stems. Bees and butterflies are attracted to their nectar. The flowers are followed by rounded, apple-shaped fruits which ripen from green in summer to a green-gold shade in October and November. The fragrant fruits can be used in cooking and even to perfume a room.Hardy in most of the UK, Cydonia oblonga Ludovic will grow to a mature height of 4-5 metres, although it can be pruned to maintain a smaller size if desired.
