The style being created is a mesh between vintage silhouette portraiture and modern bold graphics with a ornate recycled gold frame. Unit Objectives students will be able to… • Illustrate using symbolism, abstraction and doodles. • Select, use and communicate aesthetically pleasing color schemes • Students will be able to identify and communicate the elements and principles of art and design. Requirements Answers self-portrait questionnaire (70 points) Planning your composition - 10 points Rough drawing on 12 x 18 newsprint ( 20 points) Inked final drawing (10 points) Choose color scheme and add shading / coloring (10 points) Cut, construct and detail ornate cardboard frame. (20 points) Communicate the meaning behind the illustration pertaining to their choice of imagery and symbols in a written artist statement. (50 points) Total = 200 points Project Procedures Questionnaire (70 points) Assignment background knowledge questions: 10 points each Explain various reasons why artist make self-portraits. Planning you composition - 10 points Draw a rough side profile of your face on copy paper and begin sketching in rough ideas of where somethings might go. Your trying to control how the viewers eye will travel through the composition of the artwork. Self-portrait rough drawing - 20 points Using half of a sheet of newsprint you will trace a profile of your silhouette using pencil. This silhouette is where you will begin to fill the inside with abstraction, doodles and symbols that reflect your personality and story. Inking final - 10 points You will transfer your newsprint drawing onto a final piece of paper and then proceed to ink your illustration. This is the piece you will be turning in, so take your time and take pride in the craftsmanship of your work. Color scheme - 10 points At this stage you will need to determine your color scheme and the medium you want to color your image in. You may use watercolors, colored pencils, ink stippling or graphite to shade your piece. Go to the website http://colorschemedesigner.com/ and choose which color scheme best reflects your personality. At this time you will also be playing around with these mediums to see which one you might prefer. Cardboard Frame - 20 points At this stage you will need to cut a piece of cardboard to fit around your illustration in the form of an oval or rectangle. Once the frame is cut you will determine and execute the decorative motif and color of your choice. After this is complete you will frame your and mount your artwork to finish the product. Artist statement - 50 points The last stage of this assignment you will write a formal essay that describes your decisions regarding the construction and chosen imagery, colors and style of the work. Outline with Sharpie black . 4. Fold on 2nd portion, Trace middle section onto the third section. It will be upside down and backward. This is correct. If you use a window to help you, Your arms will get tired. Part of the top of the buildings may get cut off, that is okay. 5. Go over tracing with black colored pencil or Sharpie. 6. Use pencil to shade the overlapped areas and parts that are away from sun. Use a blendy stump or q-tip to blend shading. You DO NOT need to shade the reflection of the buildings at the bottom. You can outline it with Sharpie if the black colored pencil did not show up well. Abbie Going over water flap with Sharpie after tracing at window with pencil. 7. Use washable markers in warm color in the sky (about dime size) over the buildings and around them too. Dots should very close but not touching. If you can fit your finger tip between dots, add more. I also outlined the border where the sky and water meets the buildings to add contrast along the white. River and Laine applying marker dots to sky with warm and to water with cool. 8. Use washable markers in cool colors in the water. You can use a white crayon ahead of time to add horizontal lines to make it glimmer. 9. APply water with a thumb thickness brush to make the colors bleed together.

I love, love, love silhouettes! I remember when my little guy was in preschool and his teachers traced his silhouette. I still have it to this day, framed, and on display. I think a silhouette is like frozen time. You can see the chubbiness in their cheeks, their hairstyle, their serious faces. They are timeless. So, I am doing a silhouette project again this year with my 5th graders. These are different and more artistic than a typical cameo. The objective for my students was to create a collage of things that represent them at this point in their lives. So, some are doing shopping, sports, food, etc. I also told them to add text- words that represent them (ie. kind, athletic, smart, funny, reliable) to get them thinking of some traits that are unique to them personally. Made by Tyra, grade 6 You need: white drawing sheet A4 size aquarelle pencils jar with water brush fine black marker Rene Magritte is born in 1898 in Belgium. When Magritte is 13 years old, his mother commits suicide. She jumps in the river Samber and is found with her dress covering her face. This image has been suggested as the source of several paintings from Magritte: people hiding their faces with several objects. In 1924 Magritte became friends with members of a surrealism group in Brussels: André Breton, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. These artists influence Magritte's work. In the end Magritte became famous with surrealistic paintings. Magritte gave his paintings a realistic effect of surrealism. He painted simple objects, like a shoe, an apple, a pipe or a tree. Magritte took these things out of their ordinary environment and placed them in a special surrounding. One of Magritte's most famous works is "La Trahison des Images" (The Treachery of Images). This is a very realistic painting from a pipe, with the text: Ceci n'est pas une pipe (This is not a pipe). The painting is not a pipe, but rather an image of a pipe. As Magritte himself commented: "The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it's just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture 'This is a pipe,' I'd have been lying!" By putting us constantly on the wrong track, Magritte forces us to think about art. Made by Debbie, grade 6 Students draw a part of a man or woman, from about chest height. Like Magritte, we see no face. And, like Magritte, the person has something on his head. In stead of the face, students draw an object of their choice. The drawing, person and background, has to be coloured with aquarelle pencils. Use water and a brush to create the effect of aquarel paint. Wait until the artwork is dry and outline everything with a fine marker.
