Last month, 3rd grade started this little project, after I was inspired by the Instagram post of the incredible art teacher, Ms. Rogers! You can check out her IG here! I believe they painted their backgrounds, but since we're still art on a cart this year, we had to improvise! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Pencils Hexagon tracer Crayons Sharpie Markers Crayola Oil pastels Day 1: We draw our bees together. I do a little directed drawing, then we trace with Sharpies, and color with crayons. After they draw their bees, they can get started tracing their hexagons to make the background! (some liked the cardboard tracers better than the plastic, btw) After we filled up our paper with hexagons, we colored with pastels! We colored with brown and orange lightly, and then colored with yellow very dark, so they looked beautifully blended. After they colored, they cut out their bees and glued them on! Stay tuned for some more awesome art! DISCLOSURE: LINKS TO PRODUCTS ARE AFFILIATE LINKS, WHICH MEANS I GET A SMALL COMPENSATION FOR SALES. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR BLOG!

Welcome back! So glad to see all of you! This week, 2nd grade is going to be starting this cute lil polar bear, inspired by the fabulous Lauralee Chambers! Here's a link to her Insta account, if you want to check her out (which ya should!) @2art.chambers Here's how we created ours! Materials: Crayola Watercolors Sax liquid watercolors Crayola oil pastels black & white pencils scissors Big Kid's choice paintbrushes Day 1: Look at images of Polar Bears, and sketch out our own! Here's a video of me drawing it out, that I'll show my students. Feel free to show yours as well! Here's the link to the video in case it doesn't work. How to draw a polar bear for kids After we draw the polar bear, we'll add the black oil pastel outline, and smudge it with our fingers to create shading or Value! If we have time we'll move onto painting our background using the white pastel for snow flakes, and watercolors to paint with. The example on the left is painted with Crayola watercolors. For more vibrant colors you can use the liquid watercolors! We'll cut out our bear and glue it to our background, after our sky dries If you want, you could use black paper, and add the aurora borealis in the background, like we do in another project Here's the how to video. (Sorry my thumbnail is sideways!) Stay tuned for some awesome art!
Title: Iceland Poppies & Lemon Tea Artist: Melanie Vugich "This striking still life features vibrant Iceland poppies in a glass vase, set against a dramatic black backdrop. Melanie loves poppies for their bright hues, papery thin petals and twirling stems, which she finds a joy to paint. The composition includes a green teapot, yellow cups, and lemons, arranged on a red table. The rich, contrasting colours and detailed elements create a bold and sophisticated visual impact."
Embrace the minimalist essence of Wassily Kandinsky’s "Composition" poster. This abstract artwork features geometric shapes including circles and triangles, rendered in muted tones with a Bauhaus influence. Ideal for lovers of mid-century art, this portrait print captivates with its balance and simplicity, making it a perfect addition to a modern space.
This week, kindergarten continued their exploration of line, and started these fun line paintings! We used a new medium, to them, oil pastels and tempera cakes. 😄 Here's how we did it! Materials: Sax 90lb paper Crayola Oil Pastels Jack Richeson Semi-Moist tempera cakes First, we reviewed the different types of lines. Then, I showed them how to draw the lines from side to side of their (vertical) paper. I also talked about how you need to make the lines dark with the oil pastels, or they won't show up as well, when you paint. After that, I went over each color with the tempera cakes paint. I used rainbow colors, but told them they could use different colors if they liked. Many of them have not ever painted before, so we discussed how to hold a paint brush on the grip part of the handle, and to not get on the metal part of the brush. (As Cassie Stephens says, "the DANGER ZONE!") We go over the process of DIP, WIPE, and SWIRL, in the tempera cakes. We dip it in the water, wipe it on the rim of the cup, and swirl our brushes gently in the paint. We wanted our paint to go side to side as well, and try to stay in the lines we created. Here's some great artists from Mrs. Garcia's kindergarten class! Stay tuned for more awesome art! After the kids get done painting, we're going to use shapes (another element of art) to turn them into monsters! inspired by Georgetown Elementary's blog! I'll get them to draw the monster shape, on the back, with me Then, we'll draw the shapes out on black and white paper. If they want to go a step further, they can add accessories! Ms. Placha's class has some super cut and scary monsters!! Great job Mrs. Garcia's class! Here's some scary cute little monsters from Mrs. C. Campbell's class! Here's some super spooky, and precious monsters from Mr. Gonzalez' class! Here's Mrs. Kerr's adorable little monsters! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”
You can find this full lesson plan in my 4th Grade Curriculum Lesson Pack HERE! I have had quite a few people ask me about the handouts I used to do this color value lesson: So here you go... Sorry that I cut of the word "white" on the left side when I copied it, but the kids still get the idea. You can always just re-write it on the original before copying. I also included a value shading handout that I use for colored pencil and pencil projects. Enjoy! [These are cell-phone photos of copies of the handouts, but they should print fine. I hand-draw most of my handouts and then make copies!]
