I made these collograph prints with very young children. The one pictured is my example. They started with a piece of craft foam and scissors. I explained that they should try cutting out different shapes: some small, some slightly bigger, and to try and use some straight cuts and some curved or wiggley cuts. They didn't need to worry about it looking like an object that could be recognized. One little girl did opt to cut out a flower and a little boy did a house. We used white glue to attach the craft foam to a piece of corrugated cardboard and we let out printing plates dry until the next class. For printing we just used tempera paint and little foam rollers that can usually be purchased in the home improvement section of the Dollar Store. I encouraged them to print many images on one sheet of paper. I'm starting a newsletter with DIY templates, news from my Etsy shop, and step-by-step photos of some of the techniques for my artwork and illustrations. This week 4th grade will start their Spooky Sky value paintings! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Crayola Tempera Paint Big Kid's Choice brushes q-tips paint cups Value is the element of art that has to do with the lights and darks of a color. In this painting, I only used purple, white, and black to create it. When you add white to a color, that creates a tint. When you add black to a color, that creates a shade. (think dark like a shadow, to remember it!) After my background was dry, I went back and painted the fence, tree, and animals in my picture. The students will choose what color they will use for their background, and will choose what outdoor subject matter to place in the foreground. Day 1: We will talk about Value, and I'll demonstrate how to mix paint to create tints and shades. We will be using liquid tempera paint, and Crayola Artista II is our favorite! We'll start with a plain white circle, then paint a white circle around it. They will add just a couple of Q-tip dots of their color to create the first tint. Then, they'll paint a new white circle around that one, and add a few more dots of paint to the next circle and do this for a little over half of the paper. When they are done with their tints, I will pass out the black and they can make a few bands of shades of their color. You don't need many, and black goes a long way! Day 2: I'll go over how to create a "Y" tree to put on their finished background. They've been doing these since they were in K, but they will still need a refresher and some have never seen how to do it before. A "Y" tree starts off as a big Y, and you add "v's" to the end of each new branch to create another Y. After you have quite a few branches, you go back and add a few more to create an even better tree! We'll be using black tempera cakes for this. I'll show them how to add a few animals and a fence. I like how he took what he thought was a mistake and turned it into a happy accident! Great job! Waaraan herken je een heks? Welke voorwerpen of dieren associeer je met een heks? Hoe ziet een boze heks eruit? Denk aan gezichtskenmerken als mond, ogen en wenkbrauwen. Laat de leerlingen eerst op een kladje oefenen met houtskool. Leg uit hoe kleurverschillen worden gemaakt (beeldaspect: nuance), dat je kneedgum kunt gebruiken om houtskool weg te gummen en dat je met een papieren zakdoekje of je vingers de kool kunt uitvegen. De opdracht luidt: teken met houtskool een boze heks en gebruik voor de invulling van het gezicht een koude kleur (beeldaspect: kleur). Met houtskool worden eerst de contouren van de heks getekend. Vervolgens wordt het gezicht ingekleurd met pastelkrijt, en daarna worden de ogen, neus en mond met houtskool ingetekend. Tenslotte wordt de tekening afgemaakt met houtskool. Cave Art I did this unit several years ago. We went to the official website of the Cave of Lascaux. You can navigate through the cave and check out the cave art together, so cool! Here is the website if you are interested; http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/?lng=en#/fr/02_00.xml. Kinder and 1st grade did the painted hand prints you see above. They used chalk pastel to add symbols, lines and embellishments. They were required to pair colors to make them stand out. The lesson above was done with 2nd and 3rd grade. I used the Rolyco cave art kit, at the time it was sponges, they are now stencils. I haven't used those yet, so curious to see if they will be as easy to use as the stamps...we will see. For this, we used a heavy grade paper I got from Lowe's, it was very thick and tore nicely. That was the first step, tear edges of the paper and we used a watered down black or gray to paint the edges, just to give it that old feel. Then students stamped with various colors, red, purple white, black, and brown with the cave art stamps. Day two they added chalk pastel detailing. This was a scratch art that I did with my 4th and 5th graders. It is actually a tar paper also found at Lowe's or Home Depot, from the roofing department. I believe one roll was enough for all 200 plus kids. I love this project, but plan for significant prep time and cross your fingers for good weather. You will need 8-10 cans of spray paint to get good coverage. Do yourself a favor, get the spray paint with the wide button. The first time I did this project I did not, and I had blisters on just about every finger tip (ouch!!). This may sound a bit scary, but students actually scratch with nails, BIG NAILS! I have done this lesson several times, not with just cave art, over the years. You just have to make if very clear of your expectations, one wrong move and they don't get to continue. Instead they get plain white paper and a pencil. Not once did I have to do more than just make that threat. They don't want to be "the one" who misses out on getting to use a nail to make their masterpiece!!

Voor een 3-jarige zoon die iedere spin 'naar z'n vriendjes over de schutting' wil bonjouren, is dit themafeestje misschien nog iets te heftig. Maar ik hoop, dat ik dit thema ooit eens mag uitwerken voor een verjaardag onze de kleine man. Want dit is zóóó mijn ding... (ok, een prinsessenfeestje is ook goed. Heus.) Let's party ! Benodigdheden 1. ijzerdraad 1,0 mm 4 stukken à 25 cm lang 2. diverse tangen: zijkniptang, punttang3. schaar 4. drijfhout (woon je niet bij de zee of heb je geen tijd om te sprokkelen….in het zomerseizoen zijn ze te vinden bij Xenos/ Action en hele jaar door bij de decoratieversieringen van het tuincentrum). Je kunt ook heel goed stokjes uit het bos gebruiken. 5. alleslijm 6. (restjes) katoen of wol 7. strass-steentjes (Hema, Pipoos) 8. gekleurde punaises (Hema) 9. restjes vilt 1. knip 4 stukken ijzerdraad van ongeveer 25 cm lang. 2. krul de uiteinden op met de punttang om verwondingen te voorkomen. 1. draai het ijzerdraad om het houtje 2. met de tang draai je de uiteinden om elkaar heen 3. doe dit met alle 4 de stukken, zodat je uiteindelijk 8 poten hebt. 4. buig de poten en je basis is klaar ! 1. Maak een knoop en laat een stuk van 15 à 20 cm uitsteken. Dit stukje draad leg je langs het stokje, zodat je er omheen kan wikkelen. 2. maak een knoop als je met een andere kleur verder wilt. 3. de nieuwe kleur maak je net boven de knoop vast. Leg alle draden langs het stokje, zodat ze onder je wikkel verdwijnen. 2 punaises dienen als ogen. plak 2 strass-steentjes op de punaises met alleslijm. knip een kruis van vilt en plak dit op zijn rug. Van vilt kun je eventueel ook nog ‘giftanden’ maken. Je hebt vast zelf ook nog ideeën genoeg ! Deze tutorial is bedoeld om je inspiratie te geven. Het zou geweldig zijn als je nieuwe elementen kunt toevoegen. Misschien maak je wel een libelle of een vlinder. Laat me gerust weten als iets niet duidelijk is of als je de gemaakte spinnen wilt showen. * Oja... Want ik blijf een juf. Een spin is geen insect (want spinnen hebben 8 poten en insecten hebben 6 poten), maar behoort net als de insecten tot de geleedpotigen ! Maar voor dit insectenfeestje is de spin ook uitgenodigd !
