This is a smaller completed piece from the 'Beam Series'. It originally formed part of a mortice and tenon joint, it was the tenon part. I am so enjoying working with wood that has already had a practical life and got the man-made notches, holes, and nail marks to show for it! Normally I work with wood from its natural tree given shape and form, and although I have followed my same carving process the existing 'information' has led me to some very new shapes and forms. Sculptures created in concrete are made using a combination of layering and carving; addition and subtraction. Concrete is added gradually to a rigid frame, as it cures more layers are then added or removed as the form develops. A process requiring time and focus, often taking weeks or months to complete a single piece. The final result offers a unique work with a surface layer comprising of multiple layers meshed and intertwined together.
