A collection of garments and matching accessories knitted using the Fair Isle technique. The 22 works incorporate the author's deep knowledge of traditional knitting techniques, as well as patterns and colors inspired by her travels in Denmark. Along with the essays, this is a book that will bring you in touch with the depth of knitting. Stik's lessons are illustrated with photos of the process. About the Author Toshiyuki Shimada Born in Kobe, Japan. Completed graduate studies at Osaka College of Music. He was sent to the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris on a short-term scholarship. Completed various diplomas including the ARCM at the Royal College of Music in London, England. Later studied in Vienna. She has won many prizes at competitions and has performed in many concerts. During her stay in Europe, she specialized in knitting and other textiles, and participated in workshops and assisted famous designers. She has also participated and assisted in workshops for famous designers and learned traditional techniques from knitters in various regions. Currently, she is active in a wide range of fields, including writing books, lecturing, appearing on TV, and translating books and design commissions from abroad. Her work is based on traditional knitwear such as Fair Isle knitwear and Shetland lace, but she is also popular for her free style of work, and her delicate use of color and technique has earned her a good reputation. In 2017, she was invited to Tuvested Skåre (Handicraft School, Denmark) as the first Japanese instructor, teaching classes for designers and instructors. She is the author of "In Love with Knit", "Knitted Things in Scandinavia", "Knit Concerto" (both published by Nihon Vogue), "Hand Knitted Socks", "Hand Knitted Scarves with Fun Backside", "Hand Knitted Gloves", "Shetland Lace", and "Basket Knitting" (both published by Bunka Publishing Bureau). Anemone Sweater features an allover Fair Isle flower pattern and ribbed edges. It is worked from the bottom up in the round to the underarms. Work is then divided, and front and back are worked back and forth up to the shoulders. Sleeve stitches are then picked up, and sleeves worked in the round from the top down. Finally, stitches for the folded neckband are picked up and the neckband finished in rib. As an alternative to working the yoke back and forth, the entire sweater can be worked in the round and then steeked (cut). You will find alternative instructions in the pattern for how to work the sweater in the round with additional steek stitches. There are, however, no actual instructions on how to reinforce the steek, cut or finish the steek edges afterwards, and you are advised to use your own preferred methods for this. If you are new to steeking, this is not a good first-time pattern for learning, and we recommend that you work the yoke back and forth instead if this is the case. Dovana uses a single skein of fingering weight yarn, perfect for something special you've been hanging on to like this gorgeous mushroom dyed gold from A Verb for Keeping Warm — solid or semi-solids will show the stitch patterns best. A top down, shallow triangular shawl with centre increases worked into a simple cable and twisted rib panel. The cable pattern fans out to become the beginning of a lace edging that blocks into attractive points. The top edge is bordered with knit one, purl one rib and the increases are worked as mirrored make ones for a clean look. Stitch counts are included for every row and the charted stitch patterns are intuitive to follow and easy to use markers with. The stitch patterns in Dovana are only charted. I went back and forth on including written directions and I know some people do prefer them but I find that the most frequent struggles with patterns like this are when people get lost in the written directions — the charts here really do show how things line up and make it easier to read your knitting and see whether any thing has gotten out of sync.
