This hat is very long overdue. I was able to finish this hat last week and the pattern was supposed to be posted last week also. But life doesn't always go the way you planned them. This week has been the most tiring and hectic week for me. So many deadlines to be meet from work since it's the beginning of the year plus a funeral we have to attend to. I was always up until 1 in the morning and it's not my usual sleeping time. I'm not used to it that is why my body is suffering much. I don't drink coffee so I have no other means to recover but to skip work and sleep at home. But here it is now, I am happy that after all of that I am able to post this pattern already. And I hope you'll all love it. It's a pretty hat, the textures from the stitches are really coming together to create a beautifully textured beanie. And it's the very first time that I am making a pattern with a messy bun hat option that I've tested. Please excuse my measly hair tie, I was using an old hair tie. :) And here's the messy bun version hat that I made. It did come out good. It's my first time to really make a messy bun hat and include it in my pattern. That's it, I hope you all learn something and enjoy this post. I finished a new knit last week all in the name of good, old-fashioned swapping. This squishy goodness was knit for my knitting-group friend Joanna. She is the knitting group's resident needle crafter, hand-stitching designs on paper to create some really awesome greeting and holiday cards. So of course when she asked if anyone in the group would be willing to exchange some hand knits for cards, I jumped at the chance. Literally. I shouted, "ME!" Her request was a nice slouchy hat to go with her black leather jacket (she's so cool). I was a little worried because Joanna has a smaller head circumference than I do so I was going to have to pray to the knitting gauge gods and hope things turned out alright. Thanks to all the garter stitch in this pattern, the brim is super stretchy and not only does it fit her little noggin well, it actually fits mine pretty good too (because you know I tried it on before I gave it away). Since the pattern calls for a DK weight yarn and we had decided on the Polar Morn colorway of Malabrigo worsted, I cast on fewer stitches on a slightly larger needle than called for. After the brim, I knit the hat the length called for (9") before starting decreases. I had more than enough yarn, with a tiny ball leftover. Because of the in-the-round garter stitch, there is a jog where you switch from knit to purl but I actually don't mind it. It looks more like a seam to me than a messy switch so I didn't freak out about it. I gave the hat to Joanna at knitting last night and was happy to get a couple quick photos of her wearing it. I know I say this a lot but I definitely need one for myself! I have a couple great skeins of DK in my stash that I think would make an awesome hat. Or I might have to break down and buy a skein of Malabrigo. How terrible would that be? You can check out Joanna on her Christmas TV blog or in her Etsy store (if you do, get a look at that squirrel greeting card! So cute!). Pattern: Rikke Hat by Sarah Young Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted in Polar Morn (less than a full skein) Needles: US 5 for brim, US 9 for hat Began: October 27 Completed: October 29 Ravelry Link Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

The weather is getting cooler. Fall is almost here! I have rounded up some fun Slouchy Crochet Hat Patterns to Keep Warm and Fancy for Fall!
Introducing a new hat pattern for Fall! The Plum Tree Slouch! This is a cozy, slouchy rolled brim hat that is so quick and easy to knit up. If you have never worked a lace pattern before, this would be a great first lace project! I have provided both charted and written instructions in the pattern to make it even easier to follow for beginners. Also, this hat only took only one skein of worsted weight yarn. I used Imperials Yarns Erin in the Quail colorway for the sample, but any other worsted weight skein with 160 yards or more will work great too! All of us have that one stray skein in our stash that we have no idea what to do with, or the beautiful single skein at our local yarn shop that we need an excuse to buy, right? This is the perfect pattern for just this scenario. I think this hat would look stunning in Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage myself...hmmm. Here is the pattern information for those of you interested in knitting up a Plum Tree Slouch of your very own: SIZE Stretches to fit a 20-22”/ 51-56 cm head circumference FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Brim Circumference: approx 19”/ 46 cm unstretched MATERIALS Imperial Yarn Erin 100% Wool; 225 yd / 224 m per 4 oz / 113 g skein; color Quail; 1 skein or approx 160 yd / 145 m of a worsted weight wool or wool blend. Belt Welt Hat First, I should mention that I'm pretty sure this is the most expensive skein of yarn I've ever purchased, and it was WORTH EVERY PENNY! So smooth, so wonderful to knit - seriously, I would take a bath in the stuff if I could afford it. Luckily, you don't have to use this luxurious of a yarn to make this pattern pop - any heavier weight worsted should do. But perhaps the best thing about this pattern is that it's a pretty simple knit that still yields a lot of graphic appeal. Or in other words, you won't have to put in a lot of work in order to end up with a hat that you'll be pleased with. Sizes: Small Adult (Large Adult) Yarn: Simplinatural by HiKoo by Skacel (40% Baby Alpaca, 40% Fine Merino Wool, 20% Mulberry Silk; 183 yards [167 meters]/100 grams); #098 Bright Blue – one skein (both sizes) The finish. Needles: one 16" circular needle in size US 6, one 16" circular needle in size US 8, one set of double pointed needles (dpns), also in size US 8 (one 16" circular needle in size US 7, one 16" circular needle in size US 9, one set of dpns, also in size US 9) Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker Gauge: 18 stitches = 4 inches on size 8 needles, 16 stitches = 4 inches on size 9 needles So let's get one thing straight, here. The only difference between the size small hat the large is needle size - if you want to make a small hat, use 6s and 8s. If you want a large hat, use 7s and 9s! And now that we've got that taken care of, using your smaller circular needle, cast on 90 stitches, place marker, and join in round. Then we'll knit the following ribbing row: Ribbing Row: * p1, k1; rep from * Knit this ribbing row until piece measures 4". And now, it's time to switch to your larger needles and the main pattern, which is Belt Welt from page 6 of Barbara G. Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, and goes as follows: Rows 1 - 4: knit Rows 5 - 8: * p4, k2 * Knit rows 1 - 8 four times, and then it's time to begin the decreases, which go as follows: Decrease Row 1: * k3, k2tog, ssk, k11 * (80 stitches) Decrease Row 2: * k2, k2tog, ssk, k10 * (70 stitches) You may want to switch to your dpns about now... Decrease Row 3: * k1, k2tog, ssk, k9 * (60 stitches) Decrease Row 4: * k2tog, ssk, k8 * (50 stitches) Decrease Row 5: slip first stitch from first dpn to last dpn (so, in effect, this will become the last stitch of the row rather than the first); then, * ssk, k1, p4, k1, k2tog * (40 stitches) Decrease Row 6: * ssk, p4, k2tog * (30 stitches) Decrease Row 7: * k1, (p2tog) twice, k1 * (20 stitches) Decrease Row 8: * k1, p2tog, k1 * (15 stitches) Decrease Row 9: * slip 2 together knitwise-k1-p2sso * (5 stitches) Clip tail of yarn, thread through final 5 stitches and pull tight. Thread to inside of hat and knot. Tuck in ends.
