We re proud to say that from farm to factory our beautiful Gansey jumper is produced entirely in Britain. A take on the traditional fisherman’s Gansey jumper, we’ve been inspired by stitch patterns used historically in Cornish fishing villages. Details include a boxy, drop shoulder body shape with T sleeves and a ribbed and cast off rolled collar. Panelled stitch patterns run across the top half of the jumper, plus it is ‘knitted in the round’, meaning it is seamless, just as the traditional fisherman’s jumpers were made. Made using undyed wool, the natural fibres keep you warm in cold weather, but are breathable too.
At first sight, this looks like a classic British village. But on closer inspection, things don't look quite right. In fact, the whole thing looks rather, well . . . home-made.
Quick Work in Thick Wool is a delightful, easy-to-knit and easy-to-wear sweater which is knitted using a simple twisted rib pattern combined with a stylish yoke. The sweater is designed to be worn with negative ease, which increases proportionately with size from 9-14cm (3.5-5.5in) for the 1st size to 24-29cm (9.5-11.5in) for the 8th size. This means you should pick a size with a chest circumference smaller than the intended wearer in order for the ribbing to stretch over the body and create an elegant, fitted shape. Information on negative ease is included in the sizing table. If you prefer the sweater to have a slightly more relaxed fit as shown in the photographs, choose a size which has approximately 2.5-5cm (1-2in) negative ease. Quick Work in Thick Wool is knitted using Bluem Worsted, a worsted or aran weight yarn, worsted spun, with a honey-like softness and a delightful, lustrous finish. Shown here in shade Cranbrooke. This worsted weight yarn enables this pattern knits up extremely quickly and requires only basic knitting skills. Our model Ruth is shown wearing the third size 81-86cm (32-34in) worn with 2.5cm (1in) of negative ease. The pattern includes instructions for eight sizes to fit chest measurements between 81cm (32in) and 157cm (62in) and contains clear written instructions plus a comprehensive schematic diagram and sizing chart. Instructions are provided for both working the sweater in one piece in the round on circular needles, or knitted flat as four separate pieces and then sewn together as shown in the original vintage version. In the flat version the yoke shaping decreases are unusually worked on the wrong side of the work, and to maintain the patterning it is essential that these decreases are worked as specified. Yarn kits are available at Susan Crawford Vintage. Isn’t it funny that although many people don’t work in academic years, the start of a new school/college term has a sense of new beginnings. It makes me want to get new stationary, buy new tights and think about wonderful autumn knitting. So it was the on-set of the Autumn term that made me think …

It traces it's roots back 400 years to the Island of Guernsey where many isolated communities had no choice but to be self-sufficient. Fisherman's wives (or prospective ones) would knit the Guernsey's to protect their partners from the harsh conditions they were subjected to. The identical front and back patterns allowed the jumpers to be reversed in instances of excessive wear. In the unfortunate and tragic event that fishermen were lost at sea, their bodies were identified by the unique patterns on their Guernsey. Made for fun and a great first knitting project. Each flag takes very little yarn (approx 20grams of Cotton D.K.) and take less than an hour to knit. Great stash busting project. Perfect for a party or festive event and they make great nursery decor too! If you can cast on, increase and cast off you can knit these colourful flags.
