I'm a beginner knitter, I'm sorry. I have made a few mistakes. Here's what I learned so far: First, don't be scared of using "knitting" for a beginning knitter. Knitting is for average people. If you want to knit or crochete something, go for it. The only problem I had was trying to get a good hand on the needles. I'm not much of a hands-on kind of person. I use the "knitting" in the wrong way. Instead of knitting the pattern I used to create this pattern, I used knitting to make

Recently, I received a lovely email from artist Tracy Potts. I immediately recognized her name from following her on Flikr over the years, and always loving her art. It had been awhile since I had been on Flikr so I was blown away by the images of her new work that I'd somehow missed. Something Told Me It Was Over, 2012. Mixed media on canvas, 94 cm x 64 cm. Tracy was so kind to tell me my work and the blog had inspired her. By seeing other people use craft in their work, she gained the confidence to jump in and explore the medium. She clearly nails it, don't you think? Yes ... I Want to Be Your Everything, 2012. Mixed media on canvas, 94 cm x 64 cm. Her work is intensely personal and highly charged. I think it's that rare ability to incorporate craft with painting that works so well here. 74 Brilliant Suggestions, 2012. Mixed media on canvas, 94 cm x 64 cm. And also that subtle hint, just a hint, of representational that grounds the highly charged crochet, knitting and sewing that she overlays onto canvas. The Soft Wall, 2012. Mixed media on canvas, 94 cm x 64 cm. Her email couldn't have come at a better time. You know how all of us artists go through those highs and lows in our work. I was at a dull thud that week, feeling a little helpless and wishing I could do more for artists to share their work. Thinking about reaching out more: curating, writing more articles, pushing craft further into the mainstream art world. I Am Your Exotic Bird, 2012. Mixed media on canvas, 147 cm x 128 cm. Well, this work truly would fit into the gallery scene and it does. She is represented by a wonderful gallery in Australia, Anita Traverso Gallery, in Melbourne. Her work inspires me and I hope it does you too.
After I finished knitting the What the Fade Shawl for my mom’s birthday present, I decided to tackle my next brioche project – the Ramble Shawl! I have always LOVED the herringbone pattern with all that is within me. I even had my kitchen backsplash tiles installed in a herringbone pattern! It’s just one of […]

Knitters who have made their fair share of garter stitch scarves, ribbed hats and stockinette sweaters, will understand the hankering to shake things up a bit. I love the rhythm and certainty of the basic stitches, but every now and then I relish the challenge of stitch patterns that unfold in surprising ways, that teach me yet something else about the wondrous potential of knits and purls! I've done a lot of knitting in my life, so much that I sometimes wonder if there are any stones left unturned, but this Stitch Block Cowl took me into new terrain. I've knit colorwork and I've knit "in the row below", but I've never done the two together. It's terrifically easy and proves, once again, that knitting is inexhaustibly interesting. Each of the three stitch patterns in our Stitch Block Cowl employ this simple technique of knitting stitches in the row below (don't worry, we explain what that means in the pattern with photos and everything!). This is ultimately a lot like slipping stitches and has the same effect of creating a very cozy fabric with a whole lot of squish and depth. Add to that the remarkably soft merinos of Purl Soho's Worsted Twist and Madelinetosh's Tosh Merino and you've got one voluptuous cowl! Ready to take your own journey into uncharted knitting territory? Make sure you pack one of Purl Soho's Yarn for Stitch Block Cowl kits, in this pretty Yellow, subtle Gray or icy Blue. And don't forget to send a postcard! -Whitney
Whenever I make a pronouncement here, it seems to be quickly followed by a u-turn. (Most recently: no casting on anything else for myself until the closet is sorted out! / hell-OH! tag team sweaters) But it is not always thus. For instance, at the first of the year I pronounced that one of the […]

When I saw this free design on Ravelry - Non-felted Slippers by Yuko Nakamura, I got an itch to start them right away! I had no bulky yarn in my stash, so I combined two yarns in one - my handspun and commercial yarn. Knitted them on needles US8, since I knit a bit looser. I really, really happy with them! my project on Rav Когда я увидела эти бесплатные тапочки на Рав - Non-felted Slippers by Yuko Nakamura, просто не смогла устоять и тут же взялась за дело.
