This vintage – possibly antique – katagami stencil was likely used to create tenugui - Japanese cotton hand towels. Tenugui have been made for decades as sight-seeing souvenirs or as promotional or thank-you gifts given by companies, municipalities, banks and the like to employees and patrons. Tenugui stencils are much like the ones used to make kimono, but these are longer and each is used to make a full length tenugui. The dye process is also different from kimono fabric dyeing. This stencil features a thick basket weave lattice pattern with three sets of calligraphy kanji. Katagami are cut by hand, either with a free-hand knife or a sharp and tiny punch tool. They are made from one or two sheets of heavy washi paper covered with persimmon tannin to add strength and moisture resistance. (For delicate designs, two sheets of paper were stacked and cut together, then a thin silk screen was placed between them before fusing the papers together with the tannin.) Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used, but these older paper stencils are often still usable in addition to being a work of art. See photo example of a framed stencil. In diesem Sommer kommt man an Kimono Jacken nicht vorbei. Häufig habe ich sie aus Webware gesehen. Da gibt es sehr schöne Modelle aus fließenden Stoffen in den Läden. Doch ich mag auch die dehnbaren Stoffe, wie Jersey, Viskosejersey und Strick sehr gerne. Vor allem Jersey ist sehr unkompliziert beim Nähen. Außerdem hat man mit einer Kimonojacke aus Jersey an kühleren Tagen auch noch etwas wärmendes an. So hat man einen sommerlichen Look mit einer weiten lockeren Jacke im Kimonostil und auch die wärmenden Vorzüge von Jersey oder Strick, wie bei einem Cardigan. This lovely piece of fabric is from an unused bolt of vintage Japanese silk kimono fabric. The condition is very good vintage. Japanese kimono fabrics generally come in 14" wide bolts to accommodate the rectangular construction of kimono. This is a lovely pattern of bokashi peach silk with a subtle pattern of grass flowers and speckles on a beautiful tone on tone silk. It has a lovely drape and hand and is in very good condition. This would make elegant scarves, tops, pillows, purses etc. This is 14 wide; Price is for a single cut of a 36" piece but I do have more yards if you need more. In fact this bolt is currently available intact but pre-cut into the kimono pieces and ready to assemble. Inquire if interested.
