In the latest story from the Bible App for Kids, “Fire From Heaven,” God’s prophet Elijah faces off against false prophets of a pretend god. Based on 1 Kings 16:29–17:1, 18:1, and 18:17–39 in the Old Testament, “Fire From Heaven” begins with King Ahab, the worst king that God’s people ever had. Ahab’s bad wife … Continue reading "New Bible App for Kids Story: Elijah against Ahab and the Prophets of Baal: “Fire From Heaven”"

This week we have a "NEW" Bible Lesson. Please remember, that each of my lessons last 2 weeks. The first week, I spend introducing the lesson, facts, places, etc. The next week we do a very detailed review...this gives me an opportunity to see if the KIDDOS missed something or if I forgot to share something the KIDDOS needed to know. I LOVE teaching this way. It has proven to be very beneficial to me and the KIDDOS. This is the card we will add to our "GOD'S AWESOME PLAN FOR MAN" wall. This is my TIMELINE...it helps me show the KIDDOS when in Bible History the events took place....With the focus on the COMING of JESUS!! We will have a new WORD for our WORD WALL. Since we do not live in the time of animal sacrifices...I want to make sure the KIDDOS understand what an ALTAR is/was. For visuals, I decided to use the same Elijah that I used last week...I just printed and laminated a KING Ahab and a few of the Prophets of Baal. I also printed, laminated and constructed two altars. I made sure the altars looked different...and Elijah's has 12 stones! Our Memory Verse for this weeks comes directly from the Lesson Text. 1 Kings 18:39. We will be singing this to the Tune: "The Bear Went Over the Mountain." I have added Mount Carmel to our Map... We will be referring to Elijah's travels....After all, he has been to the Brook Cherith, Sidon and is now coming back to Israel to "meet up" with Ahab. The KIDDOS will be decorating a ROCK as their "TAKE HOME" activity. I have already coded the rocks with the words, "The Lord Is God!" The KIDDOS will use Sharpie Paint Pens to decorate their ROCK. They will add whatever decorations to the ROCK that they want...I will give them a few suggestions: HEARTS, FLOWERS, RAINBOWS, HAPPY FACES, ETC. But, ultimately it will be their choice. By the way, these ROCKS came from the Pacific Ocean. My family and I took a vacation to Ocean Side, California in 2011. I collected a bunch of rocks...(my father-in-law was convinced I was crazy.) I knew I would use some of those MANY rocks for Bible Class Projects. (So, even when on vacation---THINK ABOUT BIBLE CLASSES, LESSONS, STORIES, ETC.) Since the KIDDOS will be allowed to use MARKERS---they are going to be BEYOND excited. However, because these are PERMANENT Markers, I will quickly establish the RULES. #1 RULE: Do Not Color On Anything, But The Rock!!" :-) For our REVIEW GAME, we will be building an ALTAR. The KIDDOS will answer a question from the lesson. Then they will have the opportunity to set a stone in place. We are building Elijah's Altar---so, take notice, I have 12 Stones. (I paper mached these ROCKS a LOOONG time ago. I have used them in teaching so many different Bible Stories...if you have time and opportunity, I would suggest you make some ROCKS.) Next Week the KIDDOS will be making Elijah's Altar to add to their "EXPLORER JOURNAL." They will glue on a STONE for EACH TRIBE. This will be a great time to REVIEW the sons of Jacob.... They will also add the FLAMES. I just cut the FIRE area out of the paper...and we are gluing on SPARKLY paper in RED or YELLOW to the Back. (Since, my KIDDOS are small and DO NOT WRITE WELL----I have already written the names of each TRIBE on the STONES. If I was teaching this to older KIDDOS, I would let them WRITE the names of the TRIBES on the STONES. I will say, there is a LOT of ROCKS in this story...LOL But, KIDDOS really seem to LOVE ROCKS! Blessings, Ronda

This week is Elisha telling King Ahab and the people that they have to decide: Worship God or Baal. Review: Last week we started our lessons on Elijah. God told Elijah to stay by a brook called Cherith. God sent ravens with meat and bread in the morning and the evening for Elijah to eat. When the brook didn't have water anymore, God told Elijah to go find a widow by the city gates. Elijah found her and he asked her to feed him. She said told Elijah that there was only enough to make one loaf of bread, but Elijah told the widow that there would be enough for all of them. That was a miracle, and when the widow's son died, Elijah (and God) brought him back to life again. That was another miracle! Lesson found in 1 Kings 18: After three years, God told Elijah to go see Ahab. God also told Elijah that there would be rain again. King Ahab saw Elijah and said Elijah is trouble in Israel, but Elijah replied that King Ahab was the one causing trouble! He and his father has been worshipping Baal, and not God! Elijah told King Ahab to pick either God or Baal to worship. He couldn’t worship both. Elijah said “I am the only prophet for God, but Baal has 450 prophets. Elijah told King Ahab to gather all the people of Israel and meet at Mount Carmel. Elijah told King Ahab to bring the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah. (Another idol) Elijah asked the people, "How long are you going to be undecided? You can't worship God and Baal! You have to pick who you will worship!" But the people wouldn't answer Elijah. Elijah said he was the only prophet for God and Baal had 450 prophets. Elijah suggested that they each take a bull, cut it up into pieces and lay it on the wood, without a fire under it. You can call your gods to light the fire and then I will call my God. King Ahab did what Elijah suggested, and Elijah told them to go first. They prepared the bull on the wood but didn't start the fire. They called out to Baal from morning until noon. No answer! No fire! Elijah mocked them and told them “Maybe your god is sleeping or busy or something. Shout out louder!” They called louder for Baal to start the fire and they cut themselves. They kept calling for Baal to start the fire until the evening, but still no fire. Nothing happened! Finally, Elijah told the people to come stand by him. Elijah took 12 stones, to represent the 12 Tribes and built an altar. Download a poster here. Elijah made a trench around the altar, added the wood and put the cut-up bull on it. Elijah said to fill four water pots full of water and to pour it on the sacrifice and on the wood. Elijah had them pour four pots of water on it three times. Water ran down all over the altar and filled the trench! Elijah called to God and said "Let it be known to the people today that You are the God in Israel and that I am Your prophet! Hear me, God and let the people know that You are the Lord God that they need to worship!" When Elijah called to God to start the fire, the fire burned up the sacrifice along with the wood, the stones and even the water in the trench! The people believed in God. They fell on their faces and said, "The Lord, He is God!" God sent a cloud, and the drought was over! The sky went dark, and God sent clouds with heavy winds and rain. I had the above altar set up on the table while we talked about Baal, then as I talked about Elijah setting up the altar, I stacked up the 12 rocks I had to make another altar. They seemed to like this visual, and they were all counting to make sure I had 12! When we were done with the lesson, I spread out the rocks and let them pick one and they wrote The Lord is God with the scripture from today's Bible verse. They love rocks and were asking if they could have one before we were finished! This is a good worksheet to add to the thoughts of the lesson, if you have time. If you wanted to, you could just print one to use for the discussion, even though, I printed one for everyone so they could make big X's and circle the pictures! Click here to print it. This week our lesson is about Elijah and The Widow of Zarephath. We will be EXPLORING the HISTORY of this LESSON. The fact that the drought had become so BAD that Elijah had to leave the Brook Cherith and travelto a place in Sidon, because GOD said there was a woman there that would provided food for Elijah. During this lesson we will see various attributes that we must have in our life. FAITH, HOSPITALITY, OBEDIENCE. And we will again see the LOVE OF GOD and HIS LOVE shown through PROVIDING for HIS SERVANTS. As I tell this story I will be using these 3D visuals. I printed them from a clip art program that I purchased a LOOOONG time ago. It is available online and it is called COOL CLIPARTS. The great thing about their clip art is you get it in color and black and white. I have used a LOT of their clipart as PROJECTS for the KIDDOS. I PRINTED, LAMINATED and added a RING of Laminate to the back to make them STAND UP. I need to take a picture of the backs of all of these. LOL Coming up with a HANDS ON ACTIVITY for this lesson was a challenge! I knew I wanted something to go along with the idea of the OIL never running dry...the FLOUR never running out and BREAD being provided. So, that got my wheels to turning. SO, let me tell you what happened and give you a little insight to HOW MY BRAIN WORKS. I was at the Dollar Tree and this lesson was on my mind. I was looking at different items and NOT really finding anything that went with this lesson....When all of a sudden I found these little Hawaiian Themed Cups with feet. (The cups were sold in 2 Packs...a boy and a girl cup. I was NOT pleased with the HULA theme of the little cups!) But, I did NOT want them for the cups...I wanted them for the FEET!!!!!!! So, I bought the cups, sawed off the feet with my little exact-o style saw....the cups immediately went into the trash!!!) I LOVED those little FEET and thought they would be PERFECT for my TAKE HOME activity. So, next stop was HOBBY LOBBY. They had their FAKE (artificial) bread on sale for 50% off. So, I bought these little slices of bread. I had the eyes and the arms are printed cardstock from my computer...So, each TAKE HOME activity only cost me a $1.00!!! I think they turned out REALLY Sweet. I have already attached the feet to the KIDDOS bread for Sunday's Take Home Project. . They will stick on the eyes, color the arms and then glue them to the sides of their SLICE of Bread. My suggestion is this: LOOK AT ITEMS AND THINK!!! "COULD I USE 'THIS' OR A PORTION OF 'THIS' FOR BIBLE CLASS?" "COULD I REMAKE THIS INTO SOMETHING USEFUL?" "COULD THIS 'WIDGET' HELP ME TEACH A BIBLE TRUTH?" DON'T BE AFRAID TO DECONSTRUCT SOMETHING IF IT WORKS!!! ;-) We will be adding a "NEW" word to our WORD WALL. The word is "WIDOW." I am not sure how many of my KIDDOS have heard this word in a understandable context. I know they have heard it from the pulpit...but, I want to make sure they REALLY UNDERSTAND What a WIDOW is and HOW the WIDOW in our story HELPED ELIJAH. We will also have a NEW LOCATION to learn on our MAP. The KIDDOS will find it interesting that Zarephath was NOT part of the Northern Nation of Israel...It was actually in Sidon. So, I want them to see HOW far ELIJAH had to travel to get to Zarephath from the Brook Cherith. While showing them the MAP, I will be pointing out that SOMETIMES OBEYING GOD is NOT EASY. BUT, IF WE DO OBEY....GOD WILL BLESS US. Traveling by foot---Traveling during a drought, Running for your life!---I count that as "NOT EASY." But, Elijah OBEYED!!!! Our Memory Verse for this week is PROVERBS 3:33...I thought this would be a GOOD verse to go along with this lesson. Showing HOW GOD BLESSED the WIDOW for HELPING ELIJAH. (BTW, that is what is printed on the little bottle of "OIL" that the KIDDOS "BREAD MAN" is holding.) We will sing this MEMORY VERSE to a Ronda Original tune. Our REVIEW GAME is very simple. We have played something similar to this in the past...and the KIDDOS loved it....so, I decided to use the idea (just modified to fit this lesson) again. We are going to play a TRUE or FALSE game. Each KIDDO will get a set of TRUE/FALSE game boards and some Playing Chips MARKERS. I will read a question and the KIDDOS will put a MARKER on the correct answer. If the question is TRUE then they will put a marker on TRUE...if it is FALSE they put a marker on FALSE. (NOTICE the THEMED True/False Boards.... Bread and Oil for the TRUE card and Cake and Coffee for the FALSE card.) NEXT Week we will REVIEW this lesson and the KIDDOS will do their EXPLORER JOURNAL Activity... This is WHAT they will be making... They will COLOR the WIDOW, her SON and ELIJAH...Then they will get to ADD several 3D items to their Explorer Journal Page. They will add LOAVES of BREAD, a JAR of OIL, and a CANISTER OF FLOUR. The little loaves of bread came from Hobby Lobby, I found them in the Doll House Furniture/Furnishings. The JAR of OIL and CANISTER of FLOUR were made using Crayola Model Magic. (THIS STUFF IS WONDERFUL!!!) You can make all sorts of BIBLE TIME ITEMS from Model Magic...I use a LOT of the Terracotta Color, but the other colors are very useful too. This is a AIR DRY product and it DRYS really quick....after it is dry I wrote the words FLOUR and OIL on them. Then just using a good quality glue they will STICK to the paper!!! I used Terracotta for the FLOUR CANISTERS and Orange for the OIL JARS. I just wanted 2 COLORS. (BTW, keep all UNUSED portions of Model Magic in a zipper plastic baggie with all the air pushed out...and it will stay moist a LONG time.) If you can't FIND the perfect needed item....TRY MAKING IT!!!! Hope you are prepping and thinking about BIBLE CLASS. Sunday will be here soon!! Blessings, Ronda
