What started as a program based around the popular book series I Survived… by Lauren Tarshis turned into a test your survival knowledge and game. We ended up with 15 kids ranging from 3rd – 8th grade. We started our program with 20 multiple choice questions displayed on the big screen using a PowerPoint presentation. Each question was about a different topic, everything from gum in your hair to lion attacks! After the kids answered all 20 questions, we went back through and I gave them the right answer and information as to why you shouldn’t do somethings that you always thought were right (like peeing on a jellyfish sting). I created the questions from a number of books that worked perfectly for this program: The Ultimate Survival Guide The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Junior Edition The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Middle School The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Gross Junior Edition The Worst Case Scenario Survival Survive-o-pedia: Junior Edition After we took our survival quiz we played a survival game. 35 cards were placed in a line across the room. Each card had a piece of survival equipment that the kids could choose. With three teams, each player got to pick up two cards, run back to their teammates and the next person would go. Afterwards we gave out points for the different survival equipment. For example, water would be 50 points, but sunscreen was only worth 20 points. And we threw in a couple things like batteries worth 0 points, unless you also had grabbed the flashlight! Then they were worth 30 points. The kids had a great time choosing what they thought would be best to have in a survival situation. Overall, I think the kids had a great time and I was really happy with how many showed up. We may even re-do this program again in the fall for a different group of kids because we know have the PowerPoint slides and the game ready to go. If anyone’s interested in either, please let me know and I can send you the files!

There is a learning disability in mathematics named Dyscalculia. Current research suggests that Dyscalculia may be the result of mild impairment in the brain areas involved in mathematical cognition. However this impairment may be able to be remediated, especially at a young age. Dyscalculia affects people from across the whole IQ range. Estimates of the prevalence of Dyscalculia range between 3-6% of the population. Recent studies show that Dyscalculia is even more common than Dyslexia.

Have you been wanting to try Escape Room activities in your library? Well, NOW is the time. Shake up you library orientation this year with an Escape the Library project that will get your students talking!! Talking about your library’s organization, behavior rules, checkout procedures, and book care! It all begins with a quick read of “Do Not Bring Your Dragon to the Library” by Julie Gassman. After listening to the story, students will learn that someone did in fact bring their dragons to the library and NOW we are all locked in the library until they have been tamed! It's time to escape the library and the students are the newest Dragon Trainers. Together, students will read a “parchment” outlining the information that you as the librarian would typically share in a library orientation. Then students {individually, in small groups, or whole group} will have to use the parchment to solve three unique dragon puzzles that review library organization, procedure and book care. It will take collaboration, discussion, and reading to tame the dragons enough to be freed from the library. A little preparation will be needed, but I promise that it will be worth it! This product provides you with everything that you will need to run the activity. This is a completely printed Escape Room. There are NOT any digital components. Simply print and copy to prepare. What's Included? ✅ Step-by-step instructions ✅ Storyline announcement {This launches the Escape.} ✅ EDITABLE Parchment Library Charter {This outlines your library rules and procedures. It is the foundation for the answers to the Dragon Puzzles and completely editable with Microsoft Word.} ✅ Three EDITABLE Dragon Puzzles to solve {In blackline and EIGHT different colors} ✅ Dragon themed bookmark {Perfect for the Escape prize} Be sure to check out the preview to get a closer look and to have some of your questions answered! Check out the reviews that have been left on this Escape Room Activity ... ⭐ LOVE, Love, Love!! This activity was great to use for back to school and to review all of the library procedures. The students were very engaged and it was so much better than just going over all the "boring" stuff!! ⭐ This was a fantastic way to start the school year! I could also see using it later in the year as a refresher. The students had so much fun with this! Thank you! ⭐ What a great resource! Kids love having to "escape" the library.
