I have a post-it note beside my desk with the letters J, K, N, U, X, and Y on it. Those are the letters that are still missing from my list of Children's Crafts from A-Z. Trevor and I are determined to craft our way through the remaining letters as soon as possible. In the past few weeks, we've knocked Q (Quail) and V (Volcano) off the list. Once I finish this post, we'll scratch N off the list. N is for Nest! Paper Plate Nest Supplies: small paper plate (cake size) brown paint shredded basket filler cotton balls chalk googly eyes crayon cardstock or construction paper scissors glue We started by cutting a paper plate in half. Each of us painted our half with various shades of brown to look like a nest. (Our plate started out blue.) Here's how my nest looked when the paint was dry. To give the nest texture, we glued on some of the paper bits that came in a gift basket we received. We kept going until our nests were well-covered. The next step was adding cotton ball birds. We rubbed some chalk on cotton balls, then added googly eyes and little paper beaks. We tucked the birds behind the nest. Here's mine: Trevor chose to make two pink chicks and one blue egg that hadn't hatched yet. The final step was making a background. We started with light blue for the background. We cut brown cardstock to make a tree trunk and branch, then used a crayon to give it a more realistic tree texture. We cut out green leaves to attach to the branches. Trevor left his leaves flat, while I bent mine to give them texture. Finally, we glued the nest and birds in place. Here's Trevor's artwork. Mine is at the top of the post. Five letters to go!

I was asked to bring something to share at my recent visit to Wood School. I haven't made these alder bees with a group for years despite having all the bits in a nice little cigar box ready to go. Normally when I'm working with groups of children who don't spend much time in the woods I like any craft I introduce to be much more open ended and exploratory. The children at wood school are seasoned creative woodland explorers and this is such a pleasing little craft and fitted the season so well. I couldn't resist and neither could the kids (and adults) at Wood School. It only relies on 3 elements; the little cones from the alder tree, white plastic carrier bags and yellow embroidery thread. I tried using full sized cones once, but the result wasn't the same. I think the teeny scale is what makes them work. A piece of thread about a foot long, and a circle cut from the carrier bag. We folded the bag in half and cut out semi circles. This really pleased one of the smaller girls who enjoyed noticing how the half circle became a full circle. The thread is tied round the bit of carrier bag with a single simple overhand knot and pulled really tight. This makes the bit of carrier bag turn into two wings. The children really enjoyed practicing the knot and helping each other keep the wings in place for someone else tying the knot. The end of the thread can be put on the cone and wound round and round until the wings are close up against the cone. You can keep winding it up until the thread is all wound round. Just make sure the thread it is poked between the scales of the cone by pulling it every so often. This one had a little loop in it by accident, but that meant it could be worn as a ring. Or leave the thread long and hang them from a tree. More than once while we were making these a bee flew by. Spring is well and truly here (for now) The bluebells are opening, the blossom is on the trees. Let's hear it for bees and the vital work they do! Yippeeee!
Today I'm sharing the most adorable and easy origami craft project with you. It's cute. (Or should I say kawaii?) It's simple to make. And it's fun to decorate! Ta-da! Grab the kids because we're folding these super sweet origami paper dolls! How to Fold Sweet and Simple Origami Paper Dolls with Kids This post contains affiliate links. This means I make a tiny bit of grocery money from each purchase made. Thank you for your support! For my full disclosure policy, click here. Inspired by Spring, cherry blossoms, and my lifetime love with all these kawaii and Japanese, I came up with the design for these little paper dolls the other night. And I fell in love with them. They're so cute!! And here's how you make them! Materials Needed: Origami Paper (I like this brand a lot because there is a variety of colors AND they are not colored on both sides. I've purchased a couple of other types from Amazon that weren't white on one side and that totally bummed me out.) Scissors Random stickers (I love using colorful circle stickers!) Makers (I used Sharpies because they don't smear) Tape Washi Tape (It's time to pull out the collection!) How to fold a Paper Doll Head: Step 1: Fold you paper in half and then in half again to create 4 identically sized squares. Cut out the squares. Each little square will make one paper doll head. Step 2: Fold down one side of the square. (This will be your bangs.) Step 3: Fold both sides in. Step 4: Fold back your two top corners. Step 5: Fold back your bottom side. Step 6: Fold back your two bottom corners and you've got a cute paper doll face! How to Fold an Easy Origami Paper Doll Body: Step 1: Fold the paper along a diagonal. Step 2: Unfold your fold and then fold again along the other diagonal. Step 3: When you open up your paper you should see this. (We did these initial steps to help with a trickier step later on.) Step 4: Fold the paper in half. Step 5: Fold the rectangle in half again to make a smaller square shape. Step 6: Remember those initial diagonal folds we made before? Here's where they come in use! Put your hands into the open side of the your mini square. Push down.... Step 7: Keep pushing down and your paper should collapse into a triangle shape. Step 8: Do the same thing (Steps 6+7) to collapse the other side into a triangle shape. Step 9: Fold up the left and right corners of the top triangle. Step 10: Take your top right triangular flap and fold it over to the left. Step 11: Fold the side of the larger back triangle over so that the slanty side meets the middle. Step 12: Return the flap that you moved in step 10 back to its original place. Step 13: Repeat steps 9-12 with the other side. You should now see this. Step 14: Fold down the two top sides (to make your doll's arms a bit more slender.) Step 15: Now fold the bottom two corners like this to create little paper doll feet. Flip your paper over and you'll see this cute origami paper doll body! Decorate and tape your head and body pieces. If you want, cut slits into your doll's bangs to create paper "hair." And you're all set! By the way, I didn't mention it before, but these paper dolls also function as finger puppets too! If you liked this post, be sure to check out my favorite 50 Cute and Colorful Origami and Kirigami Projects for kids! I hope you enjoy making these sweet dolls. And if you want to keep the good times going, check out these nifty origami Pokemon! (They're made using the same body as these dolls!)
