Sylvia Escobedo [email protected] ~ Tel: +1 778.837.7619 Artist Statement I have loved doing sculpture since I first started playing with clay; and have always wanted to portray both the physical beauty and inner spirit of different people of the world. Through my sculptures, I try to bring to life the ethnic cultures of various human […]

I made this clay birdhouse last fall in a hand building with clay class that I took at the Anton Art Center in downtown Mount Clemens. I wasn’t crazy about making a toad abode, as everyone else was making, so I invented my own project. I formed the nesting cavity by shaping the clay around a yogurt container. Then I made roof of leaves by pressing leaves from my mom’s redbud tree into the clay and then carefully cutting out each one. Then I placed each leaf overlapping the other to form the roof. I stained the roof with a chartreuse pigment and wiped off the excess to highlight the veins in the leaves. I used a “turquoise” pigment on the body of the birdhouse and left it full strength (against the advice of our teacher, who would have preferred a more subtle look). The “turquoise” turned out to be what I would call baby blue. This turned out to be my favorite piece! And I actually got to take it home, because it did not get stolen. I have it hanging on the outside of one of our deck posts, overlooking the garden. Not sure if any birds will find it hospitable, but I think it’s charming!
