I love that my students love to write! They are so creative and come up with some of the best story plots with all the right elements. But there’s just one thing… They tend to overuse the word said when writing dialogue. I often get multiple stories with “he said”, “she said”, I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this. Or even worse, they use the wrong synonym for said when conveying a feeling or an action. Does this sound familiar? Don’t worry! Stick around, and we’ll talk about how to break up with this bad writing habit for good. Teaching students to write and punctuate dialogue doesn't have to be hard!
K-1 NONFICTION WRITING My nonfiction writing unit is here! This is the perfect way to introduce kindergarten and first grade students to what informational writing is. This unit is so engaging for students because it uses real life photographs and animals. We discus
Are your students reluctant writers? Do you have reluctant writers who either write terrible stories, or hate writing altogether? I used to have to pull teeth to get any decent narrative writing out of my kiddos. Whenever I announced we were going to write about something, they’d moan and groan, and (I hate to admit this), I’d sometimes just neglect creative writing altogether. But over the years, I learned some strategies for reluctant writers to get my students’ creative juices flowing and turned my reluctant writers into awesome authors. Now I love to teaching narrative writing, and the students are actually begging to write! I’m going to share 9 tips that have worked for me and I think will work for you too!
. . . they'd tell fantastic stories of medieval court life and dragons and castles! I just saw these fantastic shadow puppets at Kate...
What is a gifted kid? Has anyone told you one of your students is gifted and you thought, "No Way!"? We all have preconceived ideas about the concept of giftedness. For example, many people believe they all make straight A's, are well behaved and motivated. While many gifted kids display these behaviors, your class clown just might be a gifted kid in disguise.
Are you looking for a fun way to teach describing characters and character traits? Try this! Fold each side of a horizontal sheet of paper to the middle. Have the kids draw a picture of the character on the front. Put words to describe the outward appearance of the character on the outside. This can be things that are obvious from the text. Next, open the page up and write character traits and words to describe the character's emotions on the inside. These are things you have to infer about the character's traits based on the evidence from the text. It's pretty fun and these make a great display!

I can't even believe May is almost here…. time flies in the spring! This might just be my favorite time of year to teach kindergarten.
Get to know your new students during the first week of school with this 'all about me' foldable craft. This self-portrait folding activity is a fun and hands-on alternative to a standard back-to-school worksheet for first and second grade. You could use these in the classroom for a first day or week of school activity, or send home for students to complete as a transition activity over the summer break. It could also be used for a myself/me topic or unit, or a back-to-school bulletin board. The Templates There are 15 templates so children can pick one that best matches their hairstyle. They then draw eyes, eyebrows, skin/hair color, and lips, creating a self-portrait! The templates are included with and without a rectangle outline to provide an option for less confident cutters. The simple inside sections prompt students to add some information about themselves - name, age, favorite colors, something that makes them smile, and something they are good at. Finally, they cut out the design, and fold (directions are included for this). Bring the 2 sides of the face together, then gently pull apart to reveal the inside, like a concertina. Minimal prep is needed - just print templates onto letter-sized paper or cardstock and have colored pencils in skin/hair/eye tones and scissors available. Glue/tape are not required. Please note that this is not an editable file. Versions with both US and UK spelling/paper sizes are included. Benefits of this activity Get to know students in a fun way at the start of a new school year Students can complete a template that looks like them Develops fine motor skills (cutting and folding) Easy-cut options for those less confident with scissors The finished foldouts can be used for a back-to-school bulletin board What teachers are saying: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'This was a great resource to use during the first week of school. It gives everyone an opportunity to learn about each other. Thank you!' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'This was an excellent resource for getting to know my new class, and getting them to engage with one another. We had a great time discussing what they'd written, and I would thoroughly recommend this to other teachers!' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'My students loved this as an activity to introduce themselves to one another!' This year my co-teacher and I revisited the form we had been using, which was an inherited formContinue reading "Montessori Record Keeping"
