Awhile back in a previous post, I mentioned that I was working on a recipe organizer for my sister for Christmas. Well, I finally finished it in early December! It was a huge project and something different for me to tackle! I took my time, thinking each process thoroughly. I had to stop a couple of times and search/order more paper, embellishments, a ring binder, etc. But the end result was well worth it! I purchased the tutorial from Paper Phenomenon - Kathy Orta Files. She makes her tutorials easy to follow (esp. for beginners like me) and includes pictures. Thanks Kathy!! I could not enter this into her Contest due to one of her rules was to make a video of your project and I don't do videos. I tried to get my granddaughter to make a video before it made the trip to Florida, but it never happened! I am hoping that someday my recipe organizer will make it to one of Kathy's Inspiration Monday posts! And now without further ado, TADA!!..... The rooster and sunflowers were fussy cut from the Graphic 45 French Country Collection Easel style lid to easily hold recipes! When not in use, the lid stays closed with the help of a magnet. Rooster charm ~ Etsy Lid & drawer knobs ~ Tim Holtz Chipboard embellishment ~ Graphic 45 French Country Metal brads ~ Graphic 45 Recipe dividers & trim ~ Cricut cartridge, "Just Because" Cards The binder (see below) fits in the left side. I searched and searched for recipe cards with roosters on them. I finally found just the right ones at an Amish bakery/gift shop while on a mini vacation during the summer! Recipe binder ~ front view Recipe binder ~inside view Recipe binder dividers hold recipes/coupons in place, then can be incorporated to a recipe card if so desired. Inside binder ~ left pocket Inside binder ~ right pocket I left the recipe card dividers and the binder dividers blank. That way Tracy can personalize the categories to her liking! Around this time last year I took a course at a local scrapbooking store, Knit 2 Scrap 2. I had never considered myself into "scrapbooking" & truthfully was a bit hesitant to enter this culture of crazy "scrapbookers". The creation of focus in this class was creating a Mini Album. The tutorial & class was developed from Paper Phenomenon, with Kathy King who is the master creator. This type of scrapbooking is different in that you construct the entire book from the very base, to the pages & finally the matting/decorating. The first class was VERY overwhelming & it was basically like learning a new language. For my first project we did a hard covered album. There are about 6 pages in the album with tons of inserts & lots of paper layering. Cover Inside Page & Tag Decorated Pages Decorated Pages Decorated Pages Decorated Pages *my absolute favourite :) I found it a bit difficult to work with colors like green, orange, red & yellow. They typically aren't my usual "go to's" but I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with how this turned out! Naturally, I became a bit obsessed with this kind of scrapbooking & decided to take it one step further. I purchased the online tutorials from Paper Phenomenon because I really fell in love with the Foto Folios which are a bit more complex than the Mini Album I started with. In only two months I have made four different Folios & I have been in love with how each one has turned out. The below photos display one I created as a wedding gift. This was the Style 4 - Gate Fold Folio from Paper Phenomenon Foto Folio. Follow the link to view in the Paper Phenomenon online shop. Side Note: I do have to admit that I found the PP website extremely confusing to navigate through. I did some research watching youtube videos to find what style I wanted. I purchased the Foto Folio 2 package not realizing that the specific folio I wanted wasn't included in this package. I contacted customer support & they were not helpful at all & I was a bit disappointed as they did not resolve my problem. Hopefully this is something they can work on in the future. Front Page Cover Opened Flaps Opened Inside Pages & Pockets Back Page The paper pack I used for this Folio was from Michaels & I just loved how the gold & navy looked together! Amazing! Side Note: If you are unfamiliar with Foto Folios, the decorative paper is used as a photo mat for different sized photos to be placed on top of. When filled with photos the decorative paper just "peaks" through & thus it doesn't look so busy. The books are filled with pockets, photo mats, insert cards & journaling areas so they can become quite complex! The next one I tackled was another Gate Fold Folio but this time the recipient was a friend of mine who was gifting it to his wife for her birthday. I used the paper collection Pen Pals from Pink Paisley, with some accents of gold from the previous foto folio we just explored. I just loved how it turned out. Front Page Opened Cover Opened Flaps Pockets & Flaps Back Page I had a ton of left over to Pen Pals paper, so I decided to craft another Folio. This time I changed it up & made Style 3 - Envelope Folio, Side Loading, from Paper Phenomenon Foto Folio This particular folio was more of a book style. Front Page Opened; exposing envelopes Page with Pocket Small Pocket Pages Larger Pockets & Side Loading Envelopes Last Page Back Page The most current Folio I made was Style 2 - Match Book Folio from Paper Phenomenon Foto Folio. The recipient of this one is going to be for a friend featured on my blog who is expecting a little girl in January! The paper collection I used was from Bo-Bunny. I have to say that this is one of my most favourite paper collections that I have worked with. Cover Page Photo Mats in Front Cover Opened Book Pull Out Photo Books Four Large Photo Mats; two sided with a pocket & photo mats The matchbook was a different style & I keep feeling like there should be more too it. I kind of like the simplicity of it for a baby gift though because it will allow for a lot of journaling & personal touches. These folios can be extremely time consuming but I think they make for amazing gifts for friends & family! With both packages of Folios there are a total of 12 Folios that can be made, as well as mini folios, storage boxe & a pouch. So although it seems like I have done a lot of projects....there are way more to come!

I love LOVE making mini albums - I hate when after 20 people look through them the pages start tearing off the binding. There may be other solutions but this is what I've been using. I was surprised to see that Anna Rostad (If you ever want to be inspired look at her works http://www.annespapercreations.com) also uses a similar technique. I combined several videos found on YouTube on bindings techniques (combining Hidden Hinge and Stack the Deck bindings (please watch this lady's video on the how to initially make it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5cRBlfVnLo and added some reinforcing : First - get yourself one of those Tyvek mailers (or a piece of Tyvek from the hardware store) they're the ones that are hard to tear but they're a different material than paper. Tyvek /taɪˈvɛk/ is a brand of flashspun high-density polyethylene fibers, a synthetic material; the name is a registered trademark of DuPont. The material is very strong; it is difficult to tear but can easily be cut with scissors or a knife. Water vapor can pass through Tyvek (highly breathable), but not liquid water, so the material lends itself to a variety of applications: envelopes, car covers, air and water intrusion barriers (housewrap) under house siding, labels, wristbands, mycology, and graphics. (per Wikipedia) Cut the Tyvek and a piece of cardstock the same size (the color you choose will be inside your book).Cut them as tall as your mini album will be (say a 6" mini album would need a piece of cardstock and Tyvek 6" tall and a minimum of 11" long for a 5 page mini album) glue the 2 pieces together using a STRONG glue .. NO glue sticks!! I like E6000 spray but some people don't, you can use whatever you like as long as it will give a good bind without being bulky. Let dry thoroughly. If you are using the E6000 spray, remember to spray completely on one of the pieces and press hard, keep pressing occasionally and let dry COMPLETELY before moving to the next step (usually about 4-5 minutes with the E6000 spray). This is where watching the video in the first paragraph comes in handy. Leave at least 1 1/2" or more on each end. I start in the middle of my paper and work to the edges. Score in the middle (remember, if you don't have a score board you can use the little divet in a paper slicer to run a score line down paper using a stylus ). On each side of the middle, do a 1/2" score .. then a 1/4" score, then a 1/2" score, another 1/2" score, then 1/4", then 1/2", then 1/2", then 1/4" ... (if you haven't seen this before PLEASE watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5cRBlfVnLo This lady explains why this version is one of the best and how to do it. On the back side, where the Tyvek is, put a piece of ScorPal Tape .. or Terrifically Tacky tape -- You can use a strong glue if you use several clips till totally dry. This creates the bindings where you will be attaching your pages. I'm making two bindings for 2 different books at the same time -- that's why you will see two in the pictures. Fold the ridges back and forth to get them limbered-up for the turning of your pages (don't forget that little 1/4" on each end before you get to the 2" space on the very end too ... that will be the one that will hold your front and back covers. (The 2 inch unlined areas are what you attach to your front and back covers). Now for MORE reinforcing!!! ... cut another piece of Tyvek and another piece of paper the same size as your binding. Glue the Tyvek to the paper (this paper will be what everybody sees as your spine. (Don't glue the binding and the spine papers together yet -- Just the Tyvek to the spine paper. Let dry completely. If you want to emboss your spine, now's the time to do that. You only have to emboss the center you will be seeing behind the pages (I ran these through a Tim Holtz Halloween embossing folder) and then put a drip of white acrylic paint on a paper towel and lightly brushed over the embossed image. (sorry it's sideways :P ) when I fold the edges that will be under the front and back covers you can see what my book's spine will look like ... Now Glue (strong glue again or the ScorPal or Terrifically Tacky tape) the binding piece to the spinal cover piece (You will be gluing the 2 Tyvek pieces together). Make SURE you get the edges and corners glued together well. Press well and clip together or put something heavy on it till it dries completely. Make sure no glue is seeping out the edges before you clip them Finally, use a Sharpie (or other permanent marker)-- or even better, use alcohol ink (such as Tim Holtz Adirondack Inks) to fill in the white/red colors of the Tyvek that are peaking out and there you have a great reinforced binding for your custom handmade mini album. Once I finish one of these albums I'll post it up. HOPEFULLY ... I'll be done before Halloween!! HAPPY CRAFTING!

Hello everyone! I am in the process of making another Mini Album. Surprise! Surprise! I think I may be addicted. Anyway, I am using a combination of Kathy Orta's Hidden Hinge Binding (you can find it HERE) and Annespapercreations page construction from her Ladies Diary Yearbook Journal (you can find that HERE). I love Kathy Orta's Mini Albums, she is a very talented lady, but because I like to use cardstock instead of envelopes or paper bags, I find I go through a lot of cardstock and the pages come out really thick. Then I stumbled upon Annespapercreations (also a very talented lady) and loved the way she constructs her pockets with hinges instead of folding over the cardstock, so I came up with my own interpretation. Someone may have come up with this method before but I myself haven't seen it anywhere. This is the hidden hinge system from Kathy Orta which I am using as the base for my Album. This is just a closer view. Here is the base card for one of the pages. You can see I've created two little hinges on the edge that goes on the inside of the Album. When you glue the paper down on the side with the hinge you have to make sure you leave it open for the depth of that hinge but you do need to glue the paper to the actual hinge. On the other side you can glue the paper down completely. So you will have a page with a cavity of about half an inch down one side. This page has the hinge side of the cardstock so for about half an inch on the left hand side the paper was left unglued. The pocket was constructed out of cardstock following Anne's hinge method and then of course covered with paper as well. This is the other side of the page and I was able to glue the paper down completely. This pocket was also constructed using Anne's method and just the hinges attaching it to the page are of cardstock. And here is the page attached to the binding. You simply remove the score tape from both sides of the long hinge and slip the cavity over the top and make sure you push it all the way to the base to stick it down. Exactly the same as Kathy explains it in her tutorial. (If you trim a small triangular piece from the each end of each mountain fold you will find it easier to slide the cavity onto it.) This is the other side of the page attached to the binding. I hope these instructions make sense and that someone finds them useful. I 'm finding it better for myself because it uses a lot less cardstock and I think it will be strong enough because it really isn't all that different. You couldn't use just normal paper but designer papers are generally quite heavy anyway so I believe this will work quite well. I'll show the album when I'm finished and by then I should have some idea if it is going to be durable or not. Thank you for visiting. Take care and God Bless. xx Margy
