ENJOY! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a great project that uses only a couple of supplies (and a bit of patience) to create a piece that transforms from "ho-hum" into "WOW!" This is a great way to illustrate how various lines can show movement. Horizontal lines are sleepy and calm. Vertical lines are strong and stand still, but diagonal lines seem to slide and move, bringing our eye from one side of the page to the other and then "whoosh!" off the page! We start off this exercise by using the ruler to create a series of diagonal lines and color them in with markers. Then, we cut the piece up and fan the strips out and create another type of line...a swirly, curving line that also shows movement! This is also a nice op-art activity. You can use complementary colors for your diagonal lines or a full rainbow of color. Experiment and enjoy the process! Movement With Lines Supplies Needed: One sheet of white construction paper, 9"x12" One sheet of black construction paper, 12"x18" Ruler Pencil and eraser Markers, assorted colors Glue sticks Directions: 1. Draw a series of diagonal lines on the white construction paper. You can draw three smaller lines going across the page or fill the space with lines. Both look great, in my opinion. 2. Color in the diagonal lines using markers. This is the "Before" Photo 3. Flip the page over and divide the page into twenty-four 1/2" wide strips. Use your ruler for this and try to be as precise as possible. BEFORE you cut the strips apart, number them on the back from 1-24 at one end (the same end of the strips for all numbers). This photo is kind of hard to see, but it shows all of the strips numbered on the back at the same end. Now, this is where it gets a little bit tricky. I'm sure you can do this many ways, but I made three of these and I finally landed on this way of doing it. 4. Cut out the strip marked #12. Put glue on the back and glue it on your black construction paper background in the middle, like this: Strip # 12 glued on in the center of the black paper (hold the black construction paper vertically) 5. Now you can cut strip #11 out and put glue on the back of it. Overlap the left edge of the strip over the left edge of the previous strip (in this case, strip #12), fanning the right edge out slightly (about 1/2"). Repeat with strips 10-1 (working away from you) until you get through strip #1, forming a nice curve with the strips. Use the photo as a guide. 7. Once you have finished gluing down strip #1. Place glue on the back of strip #13 and overlap the right edge of the strip over the right edge of strip #12, fanning the left edge down slightly (about 1/2"). 8. Repeat with strips 14-24 until you get through all the strips, forming a nice curve in the opposite direction with the strips. Use the picture as a guide. It is OK if the ends of the strips continue off the edge of the page. You can leave them that way or trim them to the edge of the black construction paper. This project is good for the older child since they may be more tolerant of cuting up their artwork and transforming it into something else. Also, they are more capable of handling the precise measuring and cutting this project needs in order to be successful. It took me three times to get all the strips to fit on the black construction paper properly. But I really liked all of the other attempts I made too. It's an experiment, so don't get too stressed! 4th grade has been working on their Romero Britto style self-portrait, inspired by Cassie Stephens, for a few weeks now, and they're turning out so well! For those of you who don't know who Mr. Britto is, here's a self-portrait he created. He is a very talented artist, from Brazil who is known throughout the world for his colorful and unique works of art! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Markers pencils Sharpie Markers Day 1 -3: The kids see examples of his work, and the work of other students their age. We draw the portraits together, use lines to divide the background, and talk about what designs we can use in our backgrounds too. After they draw everything out in pencil, we trace with Sharpie Markers, and we colored ours in with Mr. Sketch markers. When we color with markers, I remind them about "lawn mower coloring", and how it looks a little better to color in one direction! Day 1 progress with 5th grade (2019) This project took them 2-3, 45 minute classes. Here are a few of our fabulous fourth grade examples!

It's the last week of art class and the weather is lovely. For their final project, the 5th and 6th graders did observational drawings of the weeds in our school garden. Materials: Clipboards Copy paper Colored pencils Weeds Each student picks one weed from the ground. They should try to keep the root intact. Weeds must be no longer than the paper. Clip paper to board, then clip top of weed to the left side of the board (left-handed kids should clip weed on the right). Draw a scale drawing of the weed. Start with a long stem line. Mark leaf placement with short lines alone the stem line. Then draw the contour of the leaves. Look closely at the leaf veins and draw them. Add flowers and roots. Finally, draw irregularities such as bite marks. What a fabulous way to end the art year. We practiced our drawing skills and weeded the garden path. Bonus! Happy summer! This hugely popular Art with Jenny K. original tessellation project is the perfect "All About Me" community-building activity for your class. It is a great activity for that first week back to school or for any team-building lessons. It connects the individual with the group through tessellations where everyone is connected. It has a ton of "wow factor" and presents a powerful message for your bulletin board, wall, or hallway when complete! It's fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher. I've done everything possible to make this a successful project–I've even included a teaching video. This resource now has the tessellation pages and the banner in English, Spanish and French (no price increase for additional languages). We are all connected! I hope you can get to know your students with this "All About Me" activity and that the message of this project inspired your students and school community. The message is clear. Each student is an individual with their own interests and talents, yet when combined with their classmates, they can create something beautiful and meaningful because we are all connected! How it works… Students will each work individually on an abstract tessellation piece of a person. They will personalize their piece by answering questions about themselves, like their favorite things and when their birthday is, and by adding their own decorations. Hey, y'all! If you follow me on the Instagrams, then you've seen my oversharin' ways of this here fourth grade color-mixing, landscape-paintin' project. It's proven to be a super fun lesson that my students have really enjoyed (and learned a thangie or two which you just can't beat). But before I dive into the how's, why's and whutz-its of this here project, I'd like to share some exciting news with y'all... The lovely Heidi Easley of theaccidentalartistonline.com recently interviewed me as apart of a free online summit. She's interviewed over twenty artist from all over the world to share their story of makerin' and their journey of creativitiness. I had so much fun chatting with Heidi and my lil chat will go live this Wednesday, April 22nd. So! Get yourself all signed up and I'll see you on Wednesday! And now, back to our regularly scheduled post... This lesson started with an intro to the Swiss-born, Mexican-raised artist Xavier Castellanos. You can check out the prezi I created and shared with my students here. After our chat, I told the kids they'd be using the following: * 9" X 12" paper. This is small for us. But I wanted the kids to be able to really get into the details and not be overwhelmed by a massive piece of paper. * Recycled styrofoam plates. These worked great for color mixing and could be rinsed off and reused the next day. * Sax Versa Temp Paints. The kids were given the following: red, magenta, yellow, turquoise, blue and white. After a coupla days, they got some brown for trees. I know they coulda made it but they were longing for a rich brown. AND they totally spotted it on my paint shelf. Busted. * Royal Langnickel brushes in a variety of sizes. After our lil chat about Xavier, I covered what you see here in this clip. I really emphasized the color wheel and how to read it. They became pros at looking at my simple color wheel and mixing up their desired color. Sticking with my rule of only mixing two colors together (not including white) prevented the kids from entering Muddy Town. By the end of the first day, we were about here. And, because I'm a talker, the end of the second day looked a lil like this. I did blow their minds a bit on the second day by telling them that you could in fact mix more than two colors together if, and only if, they were analogous. This opened a whole new realms of possibilities and kept 'em on the color-mixing toes. We did chat about creating patterns for fields as well. Here's another vid clip to give you an idea. I do hope that makes a lic o' sense. If not, imagine how my poor students feel! What I think the kids really enjoyed about this project was color mixing. It always seems magical when you create a color that is beautiful. The kids were convinced we should frame their palettes alongside their paintings which I kinda think woulda been a swell idea had I not needed them for my four fourth grade classes. Once complete, some kids opted to add clouds to their skies, different patterns to their land. Some added trees and buildings while others did not. And others went the more evening-time, comet-zipping-through-the-sky-route. An artist after my own heart: in elementary school, I was obsessed with Haley's Comet (1985 was the year it was zipping my way and I still have all of the souvenirs, newspaper clippings and drawings to prove it). I love this painting so. I love how each of the kid's personality's shined through these colorful and happy pieces. The final optional stage was to outline each piece of land with a bold color. Many kids decided not to and I think their work looks lovely. But I do love how bold the outlined landscapes look as well. I must admit: usually when I teach landscape, it's in the form of a collage. That way the kids can literally see the difference between back, middle and foreground. Now, with this project, I'm a total convert. Especially with the heavy color-mixing element. I love how each child's personality really shined through every piece. Doesn't this one have a Grandma Moses feel to you? Check out this detail...
